He has also stated that he is looking to play in a non AFL State (NSW, Queensland).

Out of the four non AFL State teams, we always get the deal we want (Buddy, Kurt).

Our ruck division is the weakest out of GWS, Brisbane, Gold Coast. We have a need.

The swans while good at getting deals done are also rarely disengenuous about their intentions. They wouldnt publish an article to dispel the Tom Mitchell rumours one day and then use him as trade bait the next. Forget Mitchell , he isnt going anywhere and $400 k if that is even true will seem cheap for him by end of 2016.

Ain't gunna happen Matt. Mitchell is going nowhere. Pretty sure Pyke will re-sign and we'll keep working on the other Tom and the two young'uns to back him up.

Ryder's management is reportably talking to GWS and the Lions. That means they are really talking seriously to us.

Get Buddy and Kurt to get him down to Bondi Beach at once.

        You Beauty.

Why can't Ryder work with the other Tom and the two young'ins.

I would be content to let Mitchell go for Ryder. We have Heeney, Mills and Hewitt to come in. Those guys are tearing up the NEAFL.

          This is the deal guys.

          Ryder will complete our team.

Ryder to the Swans as a delisted free agent. Get the deal done Ireland. I'm sure its been six months in the works.

The Swans will need to clear space in the salary cap. The following players have to go:

              Mitchell ($400,000)
              Malceski
              Pyke

With Ryder in the ruck we will be incredible. He can even play forward when Buddy or Kurts knees need a rest

              This is the Matt80 maga-deal.

              You Beauty.
So now we are trading Mitchell, letting Malceski go (even though he probably will go anyway) and also not resigning Pyke to get Ryder.

That to me would be weakening us overall. We can't do anything about Mal if he decides to go, but replacing the main (and really only) senior ruckman , plus giving up a damn good midfielder seems a big cost for what, in my opinion, would leave us weaker overall, and represent only a relatively minor improvement in the ruck.

I've never understood the hype about Ryder - a good player yes, but hardly the 'most amazing ruckman' you've ever seen like you are suggesting him to be.

I could tear up the NEAFL Matt80, and I've never played a competitive game of AFL in my life I did once kick 5 goals in a match of AFL 9's though!

Heeney, Mills and Hewitt might all prove to be world beaters - but they might all also prove to be duds at AFL level. Mitchell has clearly shown already that he is no dud at AFL level.

From a team structure point of view, Ryder would be replacing Reid as that forward/ruck option. So theoretically we should be trading Reid to clear room both physically and in the salary cap. Not sure how good Ryder is at playing in defence though.

                  It's about the money.

Malceski will free up money. Zak Jones, Garry Rohan, Alex Johnson or Shane Biggs will feel that hole.

Although his form is good, I still don't believe that Mitchell is a first choice inside midfielder if other insider midfielders are fit. $400,000 is a lot of salary cap, that can be used on other players. Heeney, Mills and Hewitt are coming. At least two of those guys are going to be really good players.

I love Myke Pyke but Ryder is a more agile, more athletic and more versatile footballer. He will provide more tackles, more follow up marks, more link up play and more goals.

He is not a huge build but you have Naismith and Toby N if you need a bulking ruckman.

Why could Ryder not be the sole ruckman and swap with Reid and occasionally Tippett?

There would be enough money without Mitchell, Pyke and Malceski.

Reid can also swing back as needs arise.

As much as I like Paddy Ryder, and IMO he epitomises the versatile modern ruckman and would probably be my first choice ruckman in the league, there are several reasons that I don't think it's a good fit.

                          1. I wouldn't touch any player that has been issued an ASADA infraction notice until the matter is definitively resolved. You could be left with a player who is out of work for 2 years.
                          2. It would hard to carry both Ryder and Pyke in the squad as only one could play on a regular basis, so Pyke would have to go.
                          3. Ryder replacing Pyke would probably add another 100-200k to the salary cap.
                          4. Although many point out that the 30 yo Pyke may only have a couple of years left, I think he is at the perfect age to allow for the transition of our young developing ruckmen.

All that said, if the ASADA and salary cap issues can be overcome, it would be great to have him at the Swans. Pyke could probably stay on as 1st ruckman and we could use Ryder as our third tall forward/2nd ruck, Goodes to retire and Reid moves to defence. This would leave the with Swans without any discernible weaknesses and depth all over the ground.

I was not really arguing on the Malceski front - I certainly can see how that frees up money for players coming through. AJ is not that style of defender though (on that point, does anyone know where he is at contract wise?)

Not every player has to be a 'first choice' player in their position to warrant a decent paycheck. Coming from a position that isn't based upon an 'electric pace, tackling machine' theory on football, I think that Mitchell has not yet established himself as clear first 22, but if he can stay fit (a big question of course), he will very quickly do so. His work in and under is right up there with the very best in the competition. He needs to work on his kicking, but it takes some players longer than others to improve. Bird is a great example of a player who took quite a while to mature into his role into the team and firmly establish his place. No offence to Bird, who is one of my favourites as he plays very much an 'unsung' role for our team, Mitchell is a far more talented footballer overall.

There is no way that we would be able to keep Pyke, get Ryder, without having to give up depth elsewhere. Malceski is the obviously one likely to go, but it would probably need us to let others go as well - which as I argued earlier, may lead to some improvement in ruck stocks, but probably weaken our depth elsewhere.
