OK. I will try one. I have been a big supporter of Reid but I am scratching my head to work out how we get best value from him? Is he a forward or back? Would we be better off testing his value on the market at the moment? It would open up salary space but then don't big guys mature later? Six months ago I would never have considered this but now I am not so sure.

We are not going to get Ryder, he will go to Port.
They need to make a decision about what they want to do with Reid - is he a forward, is he a defender, what is he? This floating role is of little use as he isn't having any influence on games. I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for 1 more year, but I'd want to see a lot more improvement pretty shortly. However, as Ludwig points out, we aren't in a position to lose him.
As for Jetta - I don't know what we do with him. If one of the WA clubs came in with a big offer, we would be silly not to seriously consider it. Despite having some really good moments this year at times, he was completely anonymous yesterday (should have been subbed instead of Lloyd). He certainly hasn't got the acceleration and blistering pace he once had, and this more 'inside' game they've made for him doesn't seem to really suit him that well at all."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

If Reid goes well as a defender, then the question becomes..What to do with the Grundy/ Richards combo ?
I think it needs to be looked at. It's been good for a long time, but is showing signs of vulnerability.
Walsh is another one they need to make a decision about, assuming he wants to stay.
If they have any suspicion Jetts will want to head home at the end of his current contract, then they should try and get something meaningful for him now.
I get the feeling Shaw will want to play on. That's fine, as long as he's willing to be a playing developement coach in the NEAFL if things don't improve dramatically.
He could be a great asset helping develop our next crop.
I sincerely hope Goodsey retires, but I get the feeling he wants another year. Hopefully a good pre season will get him through.Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

Ok so who might Saints be targeting from the Swans with their number 1 pick? Personally can't see it having any substance but if their was any truth it would have to be one of absolute gun younsters given Saints are long term rebuilding.
Wouldn't trade Jetta. He may seem mentally disconnected at the moment but no fundamental reason why his form can't be built up again.Comment

I would persist with Reid as a tall defender. If that means that Ted Richards plays some NEAFL next season, so be it. You also need X Richards or Allire to have a serious push for senior football in 2015.
Open to offers on Jetta. Ross Lyon could make a play as he would be desperate to have one final crack with Sandilands, Pavlich and Mcpharlin still around. Freemantle's pick in the teens would be gratefully accepted.
Open to offers on Craig Bird. I'm now firmly behind Tom Mitchell. Tom needs opportunity! Playing Bird, Kennedy, Parker and Mitchell slows the team too much. Paul Roos's early 2nd round pick would do that deal.
I cheap value deal I would like to do is Sharrod Wellingham from West Coast. He would cost nothing (4th Round) and would increase our midfield depth. He is a mate of Buddy's and could be great value if he could regain his Collingwood form.
Mark Robinson mentioned that St Kilda's pick one is in discussion with the Swans. I can only imagine that the potential deal would be Hanners or Parker. I would be a big no for Parker but may be tempted to consider Hanners. That would give us Heeney and Patrenka (best two midfielders in the 2014 draft). With Mills and Dunkley likely to come in late 2015, that would give us a potential decade of midfield stock.
As these young midfielders come through I would be playing K.Jack and Mcveigh in the small forward roles. McVeigh can also help off half back.
If Goodes and Shaw retire then spots will open for Membrey and Jones.
This is just my opinion on what could transpire.Comment

I wouldn't be upset if we lost Mal, unless he could learn to kick to his own team. He often turns the possession over by kicking directly to opposition players. All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. - Edmund BurkeComment

As for the Saints and the no 1 pick, can't see it myself. The only two possibles (assuming they're not after Buddy) are probably Parker and Hanners. I wouldn't be letting either go. Parker is still finding out how good a footballer he can become. He probably knows better than anyone why his two worst games of the year have been against the Hawks. It's always hard to know watching live who everyone's opponent is, but presumably the Hawks identified him as a player to close down, something other clubs haven't yet cottoned onto. He is going to start to get a lot more attention next year and it's the next step in his development to work out how to be effective with more attention.
Hanners is critical to us because of the relentless outside run he provides. He may not be quick but, at his best, he never stops. Sure, he wasn't great yesterday, though I thought he was at least putting in fiercely to contests, trying to win the ball, albeit not with much success. We may well lose him when his next contract comes up for grabs but, despite yesterday, the club surely has to see itself firmly in the window to go on and win a premiership. Trading out one of our best mids for a younger version who may or may not be any better makes zero sense, especially when we already have Hewitt, Mitchell and probably most /all of Heeney, Mills and Dunkley lined up to keep up the production line of future quality young midfielders.Comment

Jetta has had more than one dreadful game lately. He is a one season wonder. Also reid is always failing to delivery and as said in this forum, he has the turning circle of the Queen Mary. I would like to see both up on the trade table and I would consider Hanners for pick number one. I think a bit of his toughness has gone! I cannot remember the last time he played a very good game? He has had only a couple of OK games this year. Like to keep parker and Mitchell thanks.Comment

If we do any trading, it should be for specific players we think can improve our list and and fill roles we are deficient in..Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

Can somebody please explain to me what in the world would we do with Pick No. 1? To trade our best players for it is a folly. I agree that some changes have to be made, but trading players to get Pick no. 1 makes no sense unless we are planning to go through rebuilding process.Comment

I feel like the kpp defence is our biggest problem.
This is a left field idea but how do you think nankervis would go in defence? I'm thinking along the lines of grundy. He came to us initially as a forward. Would nankervis provide anything as a tall defender who could do most of the defensive ruck work ?Comment
