I've wondered why the Giants chose not to play Hampton even after Buntine got injured. Perhaps they knew Hampton wanted out or perhaps Hampton wants out because the Giants chose to play Kennedy instead.

In any case, the retirement of Shaw makes room for Jones to become a regular starter in our back six. We have Newman and Marsh vying to break into the side and both have made a good case for themselves with their reserves performances this year. We have several players (Towers, Hiscox, BJ, Rose) looking to break into the side as forwards, and if successful, might push Rohan to defence. So where does Hampton fit into this scenario? Is he so good that he leapfrogs all these other aspirants of does he just add to the list of a half dozen players vying for 1 or 2 spots?
Each to their own. I'd rank Hampton definitely in front of Marsh (who I still think we may delist), and Newman needs to get his fitness up to scratch (although the 2nd half of the season suggests he had turned the corner injury).

Hampton provides a run and carry style game close in description to the Shaw style, whilst Newman (at least in my limited viewings) appears to be more in your Laidler/Mattner style of player.

As for the forwards you talk about - Hiscox in my book is still a fair way off (despite getting named as an emergency a couple of times), Rose is a keeper but very, very raw, BJ is still on the edge (although he showed good glimpses at the end of the season) and I'm in the far from convinced about Towers (despite a good first final). None of them appear to be anywhere near a lock on for the first 22 in 2016. I can't see Rohan being shifted to Defence any time soon to be honest on the account of several of them making it.

And then there is likely to be space made in the forward line as Heeney will sure shift to more time in the middle next year. Lots of interesting permutations to be considered for 2016.

No troll here but anyone still wanting to hold onto Jetta still has got it completely wrong. He hasn't played a decent finals game for us since 2012, as soon as it's a hard, tough, physical contest, he ALWAYS goes missing. Sure he plays brilliantly when the opposition is well beaten and are not going hard at the man or contest anymore but after his performances in the last 2 games, where he literally gave us nothing, seriously, we would have been better off having a witches hat out there, I can't wait to see the back of him. I'll never forgive him for the last two matches, we had so many players out with injury or illness, and we pick him to play a role and he gives us nothing, we effectively took on Freo and North with 21 players vs 22. Please leave now Jetta.

Yep I'm happy for Jetta to go to. I feel like he mentally left a couple of months ago and hasn't been trying to be honest.

Thanks jetts for a great few years. You were awesome in 2012 and played a huge part in our flag. You will always be a swans premiership player but I think your future lies elsewhere

I see Newman more as a Malceski type - willing to run but with his kicking as his main asset, rather than pace. His kicking isn't as good as the Eski's was at its peak but probably as good as the post 3rd knee reco Eski.

We do need some dash out of the back half. Someone with genuine pace, willing to take the opposition on. Marsh seems to have the raw speed but not the natural inclination to use it, even at NEAFL level. To me he is competing with Rampe and Laidler as a 3rd tallish defender who can provide some rebound but is primarily there to defend.

I am not entirely sure why Hampton hasn't been getting more games with GWS. He's very talented, but I guess there must be some issues the GWS coaches have with things he doesn't do. Could well be one of those players who blossoms at a second club. I suspect it won't be us but I'd like to think we'd at least ask the question. Shame Goodesy has departed. I once heard Hampton cite Goodes as his hero. Mind you, I suspect a large number of young players, especially indigenous players, would cite Goodes in a similar way. He'd have spent a fair amount of time mentoring them at the indigenous player camps and in representative games.

Not sold on Leunberger as yet, but perhaps Steve Taubert can work his magic & turn him into a superstar ruckmen! Wouldnt want to pay 450k tho

That is a far better description of Newman - my Mondayitis brain had forgotten about the Malceski style of defender, which is a good description of Newman's style.

The main problem for Hampton at GWS is that the Giants traded in one of the best rebounding halfbacks into their team. I think he would have played a lot more games over the past 2 years had Shaw not been there.

Smith at 25yo has been playing senior footy for 5 years and hasn't exactly set the world on fire. He often goes out of games and has had his share of injuries as well. GC may want to hold on to him in that they seem to be on the verge of losing Dixon and Gorringe, which would leave them a bit dependent on the 19yo Peter Wright. In any case, Smith would cost something in a trade, although I don't know how to value him. A rough guess would be a pick in the 20s to mid 30s, maybe around what Josh Dunkley would cost in value points. Although I'm also not in favour of recruiting Leuenberger, he is a FA so doesn't have to be traded for.

I am on the hoping Jetts will stay camp. He was not the only one to face into anonymity during the finals.
We are crying out for the boys to be better kicks and then call for one of the best kicks in the team if not the game currently, to be moved on. And then what? Trade in a ruck with who knows what skills because he can't string any games together. Doesn't sound like a smart move to me, but hey, I am only one voice.,

My point was was everyone thought he was heading to GW$. Like Tippett was going to one of the Qld teams.
Recruiting mis-direction is an effective way to get your man. Just because Hampton says Adelaide now doesn't necessarily mean that's definitely where he wants to go

Pick 14 and Bird for Bennell.

Dempsey and Luenberger/Kreuzer in free agency.

Jetta for West Coast/Fremantle's first round pick.

Can't we still only bring in one player and only if we lose one via a trade or free agency?

It is all still incredibly restrictive but I can only imagine that the club has decided that this doesn't overly affect us and also that our cap space is so tight that one player in was all we would do anyway...

I just think we'll bring in another ruckman which will give us SIX of the bloody things if you count Tippo - problem is that we may need KT as a FPF and Pyke and Tom Dx won't cut it next year and Nanka and Sam may not quite be ready.

2017 should see our ruck stocks stabilise, assuming KT re-signs with KT and our new signing being #1 and 2 and with Nankervis and Naismith as genuine understudies
