Trade target discussion (merged thread)

I seriously doubt whether we'd be any more that bit players at best during the trade period this year. We have Buddy's contract to worry about for the next 7 years, and we have tied up most of our young talent already this year. Surely we have little to spend already, even with a retirement and departure or two???Comment

Re topping up Marsh and Hewett, you'd think Bird leaving would free up a bit of cap space to fund the upgrades of thoise two plus Sam NaismithComment

You're all living in la la land.
At this time, ANY player who earns more than $350,000 a year is ineligible to be traded in to the swans.
And you scoffed at me because I wanted to go straight to Court.
THIS is why.
There's no point in throwing names around the ring unless those names earn less than what we are allowed to trade at.
La la land.Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

On footy classifieds on the paper rounds for today the Age had that the ban was changed to %500K. I couldn't find anything on the online version, but maybe someone has more information or did I read more into it than was there?
Just read on news.com.au that talks are continuing and the swans are hopeful, but have heard nothing from the AFL.
Also reported that Lewis Jetta is waiting for our season to finish before he says he wants to go home (West Coast probably)Last edited by YvonneH; 15 September 2015, 03:49 PM.Comment

However, if we are going to persevere with this blue sky thinking maybe we could try imagining something more complicated. Like a three way where we give Jetta and get Bennell and WC sends some gun to the Suns. Bit like Lumumba - Varcoe - Clark deal last year. Not sure whether they are close enough to equivalent value - I don't know enough about Bennell but I get the impression he is seriously elite only tainted by his off-field stuff. I know he was #2 pick in the 2010 ND. I guess we can point out Jetta has been all-Australian, has matured and rounded his game since then and is developing his leadership. Still Bennell is younger and I tend to suspect that despite his baggage he will cost more than Jetta alone. Anyway, if we could do it, getting someone like Bennell would take a fair bit of the sting out of losing Jetts. Carlisle is in a similar boat except untainted and I can't see us getting him. (This is where the Buddy analogy becomes relevant but I still can't see us getting him. Lightning twice?)
Leaving the blue sky, I think if we do lose Jetta we need to get someone that is an elite kick and ball user to make up for losing first Mal and then, if it happens, Jetts. I'm not sure who fits the bill but they are probably not a midfielder like Bennell. Anyone else want to throw some names/ideas out?
As for getting Howe, I'm not sure that we need him but wouldn't the marketing department love it?! I would certainly enjoy the excitement he might provide. But apart from his highlight reel, how good is he and would we use him in defence or attack? All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

Sydney to win battle over AFL trade sanctions | The Australian
Sydney appear certain to win a running battle with the AFL to be allowed to compete during next month?s player-exchange period on a level close to equal footing with all other clubs.
The Swans have argued their case has changed dramatically since they were banned from trading at the end of last year and they may now be allowed to trade in a player worth $500,000 a year...
As reported exclusively in The Australian last month, Lewis Jetta will play with West Coast next year. The out-of-contract Swans runner will formally make his request for a trade official once Sydney?s finals campaign is over...
The Swans are also keen to secure another ruckman and have identified Brisbane?s Matthew Leuenberger, a free agent, as a target because of the ongoing fitness concerns of big man Mike Pyke. Leuenberger?s management yesterday confirmed to The Australian that apart from the Swans, he will also be dealing with Essendon and Fremantle.
The rule change appears certain to put Sydney in the market for a player likely to draw as much as an annual salary of $500,000. As well it will ease pressure on their salary cap by allowing them to retain a player who has surprised the club with his desire to play on, either Adam Goodes or Ted Richards.Comment

Brett Anderson has mentioned that WB key defender Michael Talia has drawn interest from the Swans. Now here is the only player whose name has come up that I think is worth pursuing and makes sense from needs perspective.
If Jetta is traded to WC, the picks or players we get from them could be part of a trade. It would be nice for them to go easy on us, as we game them Biggs for nothing.
I'm not too keen on Bennell, but do recognise that he's a real talent and would be a nice replacement for Jetta. It's really the off field issues that I'm concerned about with Bennell. I'd back our management team to make the right call on this one if it were on the cards. Obviously, the trade ban would have to be lifted enough to accommodate his salary requirements. Craig Bird plus some additional value points could be of interest to GC.Comment

Seems to have a ring of truth about it Annie. Not sure what WC can give us in return, particularly if they make the GF like they probably will. They do have a glut of KPD so maybe their first and their third string KPD who is very good going by what they've done this year?
If Jetta goes I'm keen on Bennell. Jetta going to WC means they won't have the chips to get Bennell as well and Freo appear to be into McCarthy from GWS.
So with both WA clubs out of the running it gives us a chance of Bennell. Forget his off field issues for a moment the guy is an absolute gun, and he's only been half hearted at Gold Coast, imagine the upside!!! Woo, I'm getting excited but I bet there's a number of Melb clubs not showing their hand.Comment

I wonder if Jetts did a Lachie Henderson & publicly declared now a desire to return to WA, would the Swans do a Carlton & not select him?Comment

Phelan has just reported on AFL.com that Hampton from GWS wants out due to more opportunities. I don't know how we'd swing it, but I would love him in the red and white. Giant Hampton seeks trade for more opportunities - AFL.com.auComment
