What I've realised from following footy for way too long is the overall significance of the guy. I cannot think of any player whose influence and stature goes as far beyond the white line around the footy ground as Adam's did. There have been a few other players (not many) whose achievements on the field rival Adam's (someone like Chris Judd I guess) but their influence and the issues they've raised doesn't extend beyond the sport they play to anywhere near the extent Adam's does. He is a very unique individual in Australia's history. Obviously people on this forum understand this, but on Saturday night as my family and I stood up to watch him kick that last goal, and some people behind us told us to sit down (we didn't of course) I wondered how many people really
understood what was unfolding. Not wishing to sound too grandiose, but it was the end of an era.

I was walking through my neighbourhood on a chilly day back in May, on my way to the Geelong game. A lady saw my scarf and stopped me for a chat. At one point out of nowhere she said "I think Adam Goodes is a wonderful man. I think this recent abuse and booing is just awful."

Not the first time that strangers have stopped me to say similar words.

My first vivid memory of him was also the first game that I went to, the Anzac weekend game versus Melbourne in 2003. 3 goals down going into the last, a stirring 10-goal final quarter to win. I thought it was the most exciting sporting spectacle I'd ever seen! And it seemed like many of those goals started when a tall, lanky impossibly-fast midfielder tore through the middle of the ground, scattering Demons in his wake and kicking precisely on the run to a forward target.

Didn't realise at the time that I was seeing one of the all-time greats in one of his best, ultimately Brownlow-winning years.

That first season after a great from your time retires is always weird. I remember thinking it was odd not to see Micky O anymore, or Kirky, and many others especially as the 2005 winning team dwindled away. But I think it's going to be really weird for a long time, not seeing 37 out there.

I hope Adam continues to find happiness and success, purpose and peace after footy. I don't think we'll see his like again.

          Goodes

I can't believe this, but the MRP has fined Goodes $1,000 for 'misconduct' against Scott Thompson.

I assume this refers to the alleged kicking incident. I've watched the video replay about a dozen times. Goodes was on his back on the ground and arched his back so that he could roll on to his feet and stand up. If he made any contact at all with Thompson it was the slightest of touches.

It was not a kicking action. To aim a kick he would have had to put his weight on to his buttocks which would then not have allowed him to spring to his feet in the manner he did. The difference in action and weight distribution can be seen by comparing the video of the Lindsay Thomas kick/push off in the previous week.

I'm really angry that the MRP has chosen to give the haters this final ammunition.

"Adam Goodes, Sydney Swans, has been charged with a first offence of misconduct against Scott Thompson, North Melbourne, during the third quarter of the First Semi Final between the Sydney Swans and North Melbourne, played at ANZ Stadium on Saturday September 19, 2015.

In summary, he can accept a $1000 sanction with an early plea."

I've actually found myself outright angry with so much about this. To think a bloke who made himself a great player, leader and icon to so many felt the need to walk quietly into the night is a sad and shameful thing.

But everyone on this board knows two things: we've been privileged to watch a player without peer, and as a person, Adam Goodes on his worst day is better than every one of his critics.
I have convinced myself that by going quietly he has deprived the haters from having a chance to pretend they are ok by applauding him at the end. Goodsey knows he is loved & admired by the people who matter.

The following lines from a recent Neil Cordy article sums up why I am so sick of the AFL and so ashamed of the behaviour of far too many of my fellow citizens. It's a stain that will never be washed from my memory. No Cookies | The Advertiser

Goodes? treatment over the past two years has discouraged every young indigenous Australian in any walk of life from speaking out against any injustice.

The awful lesson is: If you are an indigenous Australian don?t stick your head up and speak out, you?ll get it kicked in.

While the fine is relevant to Goodsey, could the Mods please give it its own thread? It'd be nice if this thread was reserved for all the positive & goodes things about Adam (pun intended).

Adam can't win in his decision to not attend the GF parade and Brownlow.
If he goes he will get booed 'one last time' and if he doesn't he will be branded a sook.
