At this point it's looking as though we will be missing Reid, McGlynn, Rohan and Macca for round 1 given that none will see any action in the first 2 NAB games. Not much news on Rohan, so perhaps he's still a chance for the 3rd NAB game.
It's good to see Jones has recovered and is a chance for round 1.
Reid is a real worry. He and his brother both have troubling histories with soft tissue injuries.
I think we may see all of Reg, Ted, Talia and Laidler in round 1. It doesn't look like a rebounding backline, but Talia can take the game on. He could be a very important player for us this year and beyond.
No one likes to see injuries this time of year, but none look to be season threatening and I don't mind seeing a few of the younger guys get a few games early on.Comment

alrighty
possibly out for rd 1 = Macca, McGlynn, Rohan, Reid, Heeney, Richards ??
So for fun just looking at worst case scenario with the above 6 out......just to to see how we match up - i know we will have probably only 2 or 3 out for rd 1 but lets have a look for a depth gauge !
Smith Talia Laidler
Jones Grundy Rampe
Hannes Parker Lloyd
Sinclair Kennedy HarryC
Robbo Franklin Kizza
BJack Tippett Towers
Mitchell Hewett Mills Rose"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Very few options if you eliminate the newbies. Robinson would be under some pressure for a spot perhaps if you decided to move Jones to the forward pocket and replace him with Marsh on the HBF. Same could be done with Leonardis. Also Dawson could be a straight replacement for Robbo in the FP.
It brings home the lack of experienced depth in the list.
Otherwise that seems to be the team.We have them where we want them, everything is going according to plan!Comment

With Rohan on the LTIL we are seriously depleted for footspeed now, especailly if you count Shaw's run and carry in addition to Jetta. Could that mean that O'Riordon is getting an early call-up? The other possibility that we are looking for a half back so Newman and Marsh could be in the mix. Could be both with AJ on the LTI as well.We have them where we want them, everything is going according to plan!Comment

And as far as the above team goes, if you throw Heeney into the side, it looks a pretty strong side to me. A midfield that will get over the top of many other midfields, a stingy defence and a forward line that is capable of kicking big scores. But of course, there are a couple of small worries; a probable lack of elite speed, and if the previous NAB game was anything to go by, the disposal skills still need a bit of working on.Comment

I've been worried about our lack of depth with experienced and capable senior players petering out around the 18-19 point of a fully fit list and that includes Mills. Don't think anyone can dispute that is where our list gets very wobbly.
Every injury is now a real worry, the pain getting exponential, with the balance of our best 22 list made up of players who have failed to prove themselves worthy or not ready last season.
Given the improvement likely in a number of sides from last year like Geelong, Port, GWS etc and maybe none of the finalists looking any weaker, we are in a very tricky position and only a few more injuries could see us out of the eight. I'm not being alarmist but I've studied all the lists and we are vulnerable.
Towers, Jones, BJ, Talia, Rose, Hewett, Newmann must rise to AFL standard or we are sunk. I'll be watching the last two NAB games with fingers crossed, maybe a smokey or two might emerge.Comment

Senior Players - fremantlefc.com.au
i think the depth argument is one that needs to be relative to a team such as a Freeo ie consistent top 5 team
does anyone go past their top 24 players as players that you would pick as starting players ?
i left out 6 quality players from our 22 i.e. 28 players................i reckon it is a fair argument our best 24 players are as strong as Freeo's best 24"be tough, only when it gets tough"

I look at that team and it struggles but if you add in two of the six on that list, say Heeney and Richards, it suddenly looks a lot sronger.
For mine it confirms what we all know, that we lack a third key defender and have been very lucky with Ted and Reg's durability and that we really need Talia to make the leap.
Most teams would struggle with 6 of their best 22 out though but we do need a couple of guys to step up massively, and I'm thinking Davis or a Xav Richards to come in out of left fieldComment

If you're thinking "Premiership" this year, you're probably a bit ahead of yourself. It's fine to dream, and I'm dreaming too. It would be a great story, but I think the bookies are around the mark giving us less than a 10% chance to make it to the top spot.
That said, I'm pretty excited about this season, mainly because we have a lot of young players that look to be on their way to becoming very good footballers, the kind of footballers that make a premiership team. It would just be a bit too optimistic that they will all come of age this year.
The depth of our list is with young talented players like Heeney, Mills, Jones, Hewett and developing players like Lloyd, Cunningham and Towers. This year is about how well those kind of young players improve. It's also about how quickly they can meld into a cohesive slick unit that can play solid 2 way football.
Throughout the season we are likely to have a fair number of players in the side with fewer than 50 games experience. That usually doesn't make for a premiership side, but it can be very exciting to watch when you can see the future developing in front of your eyes. I think too much is made of premierships. That sort of premiership or bust mentality leaves the supporters of 17 clubs disappointed. I just want to see the Swans play intelligent, exciting, energetic footy. If we do that, then premierships will follow.Comment
