It is not a short read, but is very comprehensive. I guess the bidding system is just too complex to be summarised in anything shorter!Twitter @cmdil

An idiot's guide to the new AFL bidding system
It is not a short read, but is very comprehensive. I guess the bidding system is just too complex to be summarised in anything shorter!
My Understanding is that if, for example, we match Mills with a bid at #3 that our first pick jumps to #3 and that any other picks that are required to make the points are moved to the back of the draft. So, based on where he is called out then we effectively have Pick 33 go to 3 and 36 and 37 move to the back of the draft (unless he goes silly hate) and 44 probably move back in the order.
Emma seems to think that us bidding for Mills kind of takes him out of the draft and ALL our fully absorbed picks (including 33) are taken into account when moving other picks up the order.
Overall it is not a bad article though. She certainly know her stuff. Mills seems pretty much agreed at #3 now but there is no way Hopper and Kennedy will be passed up I feel. The Lions kids seems good value and one early teens and one late teens seems about right. Gold Coast would seem to not have a cracker, it is so easy to see them turning into a basket case.
One thing she does hint at, and I think it is correct, is that clubs should be very very careful about being vindictive. There doesn't need to be anything said, as that would be a very serious charge, but the Dees have just performed some trades with GWS that were very fair to the Dees (they basically got Bugg for nothing and he is a very very good player) - whilst they may well match one of Kennedy and Hopper at 7 (in fact I would hope they would as they are both rated top 5 or 6) it would be very poor form to match a GWS Boy at 3 and I'd be disappointed if they matched more than two academy kids at 3 (I think it will be Mills and I am OK with that). Likewise the Bombers at 4 and 5 may well match an academy kid (Hopper) at 5 for the integrity of the system but they may well wish to trade with GWS so really they should not be in the business of ruining relationships.
I can see Mills at 3 by the Dees, Hopper at 5 by the Bombers and Kennedy at 7 by the Dees. If that happens then no-one in their right mind can say that the bidding system is not working how it should be.Comment

It is but I think she had the wrong end of the stick we the matching bid.

I share your sentiments about clubs doing good deals with academy clubs, i.e. Melbourne and Carlton with GWS and us with Essendon, should play nice, but this is exactly what all the fuss was about a few days ago when the AFL warned about doing secret non bidding deals in exchange for favourable trades. I don't know how those comments will affect the draft. There's even the possibility that Melbourne will bid on Hopper before Mills just so they appear not to be doing favours for GWS, especially now that Hopper has been getting ranked above Mills by a number of notable pundits. I guess we won't know until it happens.Comment

I believe you're right about how the picks move about and if Mills is bid at 3 then pick 44 should move down to 62. But I think our pick 54 moves up 3 places to pick 51 as picks 36, 37 and 44 move back. Just filling the gaps and when the GWS and Brisbane kids are taken their will be a lot more gap filling.

If Hopper goes at 4, Kennedy at 7, Himmelberg at 29 and Flynn at 40 then by my calcs GWS will be able to avoid deficit next year.
Plus they have two first round picks (Collingwood and Geelong) and one second round pick (Adelaide) already in the bank for 2016. By the finals next year they will have about 25 players in the 50+ games mark (18 as at now) - regardless of the fact that some were soft games there can be no doubt that their list is quickly becoming the perfect storm. I'm not quite so sure young Cammie will be so homesick when they start winning flags. Their list is pretty much locked and loaded for the next 2-3 years....
By contrast though Gold Coast, despite having an extra year on GWS have only got 15 current players with 50+ games with the ability to go to 20-21 next year. Plus I think their quality is lower than that of GWS
I think that clubs will be reluctant to "go to town" on academy products that they know are going to be matched. For starters it's vindictive and you'd hope would attract AFL attention (then again maybe not) but on a more practical level it will sour relations with the Northen Block of clubs. And that is not something a sensible club will do (whilst Collingwood have gotten Treloar I am sure that GWS will not forget their appalling behaviour this year) and given we operate on a slightly different plane now we are the key to making deals happen as in a good crop year for an academy club (e.g. Brisbane this year) then all yoru picks are for sale for points so we present the key to a Victorian club getting that crucial upgrade pick.
Paul Roos has always had a reputation for trading very fairly and I don't think it is any co-incidence at all the Dees have pick 3 and 7 plus a handful of very good players, quite a remarkable and largely unnoticed result. Having said the Dees have traded their # 1 pick for 2016 to the Gold Coast so they are clearly banking on a major climb up the ladder this year.
I just feel that things may pan out a bit better than we think, Of course it helps not having the Scum and the Wees and Poos in the mix at all.Last edited by Mug Punter; 17 November 2015, 08:05 PM.Comment

with out doubt IMO........there is a gentleman agreement in negotiation........ that when you assist over and above what is reasonable that the other party replies in return at some stage........ either in the current draft or next if possible
it is a storm in a tea cup as the no 3 pick as example this year could go to any 3 or 4 players"be tough, only when it gets tough"

I can't help but think though that the constant obsessing and media attention with academy players this year has enhanced their value though...Comment
