I'm just puzzled why we'd supposedly offer so much for a young forward who is a bit of a 'tweener'? At 192 cm is he that different to Membrey (188cm) or before that, say a Lewis Johnston (192cm)??? We have Sam Reid and we will supposedly not be able fit him into our forward structure when fit, so why would we want this guy? Sounds like a red herring to me.Comment

I'll raise my hand as one who wouldn't be too upset to see Reid move on.

I can see us making a play for Wood and offering around the same money we would probably have to give Tom Mitchell. If the Wood deal is for real, then Mitchell is surely gone. Both deals will probably involve draft picks, and I would think that we would come out with a bit extra in that regard.
I think Wood is a good pick up if we can get him. He's very talented and would be a good compliment for Franklin and Tippett as a 3rd tall option. He's and excellent mark and kick and good contested ball winner as well. The end result is a player swap that re-balances our team which is strong in midfield, but light on KPPs. Reid can play as a defender, if and when he's ever fit enough to play. Some will argue otherwise, but I feel Reid is better suited to CHB than forward.
You have to wonder where these journos get these stories from, but you've got to figure there is some basis to it since the journo's reputation is on the line. Some are wrong, but so many turn out to be true. In this case you've got 2 good young players that haven't signed yet with their existing clubs, so something must be going on. NM will surely be going into decline with so many aging players and they aren't quite up to challenging for the flag this year. It would be attractive for a player like Wood to move to Sydney for the opportunity to win a premiership, besides the money factor.
I'd expect some change in terms of picks/points whatever is arranged.

We'd have to offer a pretty major makeweight to make that deal happen and I'm also not sure we'd have the cap space for Mitchell and Wood on $500K plusComment

As it stands now we will go into next season with 4 KPPs under 30 yo. Davis and Aliir have played 3 games between them. Talia and Reid are both out injured at present. It would be nice to have AJ back, but you can't really plan on it happening. It doesn't seem like a whole lot of depth to me and a bit worrisome in the longer term. So I can see why we would be looking to bolster our KPP stocks if an opportunity presents itself.
If we believe that Mitchell will be leaving (and we probably have a good idea by now), then it makes sense to bring in a quality player in his stead, but look for someone that plays a position where we lack depth. We have 4 quality players in Heeney, Mills, Hewett and Jones that could step into Mitchell's spot.
From comments made by Longmire over the past couple of years, I get the impression he really likes both Reid and Towers. Reid can play many positions, which makes him a very valuable player in today's game. The big issue is the number of soft tissue injuries he's had and whether he can be depended upon to be on the field when needed.
Towers has the skill set and athleticism to be a very good player and he continues to improve. He does have a real problem with his decision making which is the main thing holding him back at present and only time will tell if that will improve with more senior game time. We should have a better idea by the end of the season. Towers doesn't have to play forward. He's even shown that he can play as an on-baller; with ball in hand he has the ability to break into space like a Judd or Dangerfield.
So I don't see why bringing in Wood should be predicated on trading out both Towers and Reid, let alone even one of them.Comment

This doesn't quite make sense to me.

Towers is enigmatic to say the least but he is probably reasonably cheap and he won't break the bank to keep and I think he is probably one of Horse's Pets because I imagine he is very low maintenance as a player and also pretty popular generally in the group. I think with a few more performances in the bank like the last two weeks that his future will be in his hands and I'd hope he repays our patience and loyalty.Comment
