It is believed the Swans' offer for the 22-year-old is up to $500,000 a season and would see him a permanent part of a forward line alongside Lance Franklin and Kurt Tippett.

Prior to injuring his knee on the weekend, Wood had played the last five consecutive matches for the Kangaroos.

It is seen as good money for a player with 16 career games, but a deal the Swans can afford with the likely exit of Ted Richards and the strong possibility that Tom Mitchell will accept an offer from Hawthorn."

I can't see North giving up Wood easily and what could we trade to get him. I do rate him though
    $500K?
That's an awful lot of money for someone who has only played 16 games and is prone to injury.
Surely, they'd be better off dividing all that money between our young kids to keep them on board.
Can't see the swans paying overs like that.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

I'm just puzzled why we'd supposedly offer so much for a young forward who is a bit of a 'tweener'? At 192 cm is he that different to Membrey (188cm) or before that, say a Lewis Johnston (192cm)??? We have Sam Reid and we will supposedly not be able fit him into our forward structure when fit, so why would we want this guy? Sounds like a red herring to me.

Plus we have Dawson (189cm) in ressies who has been developing nicely as a medium forward with a big left boot.

Agree totally. It's a slow news week so lets make stuff up.

Plus they already ran the "Gary Rohan is from somewhere vaguely near Geelong so he must be going there next year" story last week....

If Mitchell decides on Hawthorn - then a straight swap one of either Gunston or Bruest.

The watch the tears as Hawks implode.

I really like Dawson, reminds me a lot of Mark Bayes. I hope he turns out as good.

Not sure re money but Mason Wood for Dean Towers would work if Towers wants to back to Melbourne

I think you've answered your own question.

I'll raise my hand as one who wouldn't be too upset to see Reid move on.

I'm all good with the deal now that Annie is questioning it.

Maybe we are practising some misdirection here? Let the media think we are moving in one direction when eventually we will unveil even bigger fish that nobody saw coming.

I think the wood deal would be based on towers, reid or both leaving. Nothing to do with Mitchell, other than cap space

I think Wood is a good pick up if we can get him. He's very talented and would be a good compliment for Franklin and Tippett as a 3rd tall option. He's and excellent mark and kick and good contested ball winner as well. The end result is a player swap that re-balances our team which is strong in midfield, but light on KPPs. Reid can play as a defender, if and when he's ever fit enough to play. Some will argue otherwise, but I feel Reid is better suited to CHB than forward.

You have to wonder where these journos get these stories from, but you've got to figure there is some basis to it since the journo's reputation is on the line. Some are wrong, but so many turn out to be true. In this case you've got 2 good young players that haven't signed yet with their existing clubs, so something must be going on. NM will surely be going into decline with so many aging players and they aren't quite up to challenging for the flag this year. It would be attractive for a player like Wood to move to Sydney for the opportunity to win a premiership, besides the money factor.
I'd accept this trade if Mitchell doesn't want to stay. It gives us some options up front and we're well stocked for mids. Parker will play in the guts full time and Mills will move there and I'd rate Mills as superior to Mitchell within a season or two.

I'd expect some change in terms of picks/points whatever is arranged.

We'd have to offer a pretty major makeweight to make that deal happen and I'm also not sure we'd have the cap space for Mitchell and Wood on $500K plus

This doesn't quite make sense to me.

As it stands now we will go into next season with 4 KPPs under 30 yo. Davis and Aliir have played 3 games between them. Talia and Reid are both out injured at present. It would be nice to have AJ back, but you can't really plan on it happening. It doesn't seem like a whole lot of depth to me and a bit worrisome in the longer term. So I can see why we would be looking to bolster our KPP stocks if an opportunity presents itself.

If we believe that Mitchell will be leaving (and we probably have a good idea by now), then it makes sense to bring in a quality player in his stead, but look for someone that plays a position where we lack depth. We have 4 quality players in Heeney, Mills, Hewett and Jones that could step into Mitchell's spot.

From comments made by Longmire over the past couple of years, I get the impression he really likes both Reid and Towers. Reid can play many positions, which makes him a very valuable player in today's game. The big issue is the number of soft tissue injuries he's had and whether he can be depended upon to be on the field when needed.

Towers has the skill set and athleticism to be a very good player and he continues to improve. He does have a real problem with his decision making which is the main thing holding him back at present and only time will tell if that will improve with more senior game time. We should have a better idea by the end of the season. Towers doesn't have to play forward. He's even shown that he can play as an on-baller; with ball in hand he has the ability to break into space like a Judd or Dangerfield.

So I don't see why bringing in Wood should be predicated on trading out both Towers and Reid, let alone even one of them.

We may also be planning on trading future draft picks. If there are no stand out academy players then we might be happy trading out both this years and next years first round picks.

I guess from a cap space perspective we could swap Reid and Wood but I think that if we are going with our current crop of KPDs then we'd want Reid's versatility at least for next year when we know for sure that Aliir has a huge future.

Towers is enigmatic to say the least but he is probably reasonably cheap and he won't break the bank to keep and I think he is probably one of Horse's Pets because I imagine he is very low maintenance as a player and also pretty popular generally in the group. I think with a few more performances in the bank like the last two weeks that his future will be in his hands and I'd hope he repays our patience and loyalty.
