If Nankervis stayed, his development would have been limited - playing mostly NEAFL and probably only in-and-out of the seniors based on injuries. He's unlike most other young ruckman in that most are physically underdeveloped and injury prone as they grow into their bodies.
I'm not really sure there is a great deal of development left in Nankervis anyway - he's slow and lumbering, which isn't the modern prototype of a ruckman or even the forward/ruck role. He would have done a lot better 20 years ago.
You never get what the players 'real value' is in these situations - Hawthorn didn't for Kennedy, Geelong for Mumford etc.Comment

I can't see the angst about trading this year.
Mitchell wanted to go. Nank wanted to go. X...who knows?
There is no rule that we have to trade.
Look at last year: we lose Goodes, Pyke, Shaw. Trade out Bird for 0 and swap Jetta for Sinkers.
But....brought on
Naismith
Aliir
Hewett
Marsh
Drafted Mills and Papley,
and
made the GF.
We traded for none of these.
So, recruitment was good, development was good.
Now we need to go to the draft to replace those who have been developed into first graders.
Second, we have players in the wings who probably will be first graders:
Davis
Dawson (I'm excited by him)
Newman
and others.
Hopefully AJ can play and that is like drafting a first rounder for nothing.Comment

Will hold judgment for now.
If we can trade up our picks and the end result is we either hold one inside top 10 or three inside top 30, a good chance to bring quality onto our list.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

It was a mistake to draft Nankervis at pick 35 and I said so at the time. Why in the world did we sign Tom Derickx and extend his contract no less? And trading Jetta for Sinclair was also a bad move. I wanted a draft pick. Now we have someone earning 400k a year who will only play if someone gets injured. How many ruckmen do we need? Port Adelaide played their best when they had no ruckmen and had to play Trengove in the ruck. Worked fine. I don't know why we keep doing this except to keep Steve Taubert employed.
The NSW and QLD clubs always get ripped off with player movements. Other clubs know we have no power, so we are easy targets. The Giants struck a good deal at startup and will have their run, but their time will come to eat dust as well. Eddie McGuire and Mike Fitzpatrick will get their wish in due course.
We will be lucky if we can trade Richards and picks 39 and 52 to NM for pick 33.Last edited by Ludwig; 19 October 2016, 05:15 PM.Comment

Considering where we drafted nankervis and his development, to accept a lower pick is just madness. Would have been better to not trade and accept no compensation as a market signal. Negotiation 101.He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.Comment

Now all we need, to make this a truly awful trade period for the Swans...
Is...
1) Get unders for Richards....
2) Keep Towers
3) Bring in Clarke or MinsonWhenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it's time to pause and reflect... MTComment

True, but the other lesson is we should be trying these youngsters on our lists (including Allir) before we go spending big on the likes of Talia and Sinclair.Comment

What happened to the good ol days when we traded peanuts for young fringe players from other clubs and polished them into gems:
Ted Richards (traded from Essendon for draft picks 19 and 50)
Josh Kennedy and Ben McGlynn (traded from Hawthorn, with Ben McGlynn, for draft picks 39, 46 and 70)Comment
