Still no news on towers, Richards, Hiscox or Davis. Out of the 4 I hope Davis stays. Would've said Richards too but if he wants to go then he might get picked up by someone in the pre season draft

Afl.com staff writers select our best 22 for 2017:

B: Nick Smith, Heath Grundy, Dane Rampe
HB: Callum Mills, Aliir Aliir, Jarrad McVeigh
C: Kieren Jack, Josh Kennedy, Isaac Heeney
HF: Tom Papley, Sam Reid, George Hewett
F: Lance Franklin, Kurt Tippett, Gary Rohan
R: Sam Naismith, Luke Parker, Dan Hannebery
INT: Jake Lloyd, Zak Jones, James Rose, Harry Cunningham
EMERG: Jeremy Laidler, Dean Towers, Daniel Robinson

Interesting to have Harry C. and Rose included on the bench. Sinclair left out and Laidler rather than Talia as an emergency.

Nic Newman will be starting 22, Harry won't be, just that they don't know anything about Newman but we do! Don't think O'Riordan will be far away either. You can also never tell how quickly last years NEAFL players might rise to senior standard either with another off season suddenly catapulting guys forward, Dawson is one I'd like to see go up a notch or two, could be a weapon.

Newman will replace Mills on a HBF and Mills to play more wing, we know this, AFL writers don't.

You can never tell if a draftee will be best 22, Mills and Papley did last year, and there are places available with Mitchell and McGlynn going out of this years best 22.

I really hope they don't play McVeigh off HB but play him as a small forward, with Newman off HB instead.

I hope Newman is as good as everyone thinks.
I can remember writing on here that we gave up two draft picks for Tommy Walsh who I thought was an average VFL player and a lot of people raved about him, Newman was also no superstar in the VFL so I hope he has improved.

Be good if we had a 2yr deal for Michael Barlow
Can play inside and fwd and gets us another big body

Newman is a star at NEAFL level. He made the Team of the Year, was 10th in the MVP voting and was voted BOG in the NEAFL GF. He's been dominant this year and finished the year off particularly well. He will 24 in January, so it's really his time to step up to AFL level. He has the skills, maturity and physical development to walk right into our back 6 next year. I think Newman played at a level at least as good as Aliir in the NEAFL and we can see how easily Aliir stepped into senior footy.

I would like to see Talia come into the side and allow Aliir, Rampe and Newman more freedom to be attacking players. All have good pace and kicking skills and like to take the game on. Our biggest weakness this year was getting locked down in our back half of the ground, putting our defence under enormous pressure. I would hope to see more contested marking on our rebound from defence with Aliir, Tippett, Reid, Heeney and Mills taking on more of that kind of role.

                . . . . . . . . .

I was surprised that the Suns didn't take Barlow. Maybe they still will if he becomes a DFA. I think we are too tight on our salary cap to take any mature players. We need to push the development of our younger players by leaving open opportunities in our senior side.

Newman won the Fothergill-Round medal in the VFL (equivalent to Rising Star). Then again so did Dean Towers. We like Newman because he's a beautiful kick of the ball.

It isn't 'AFL writers' that came up with that 22. It was Adam Curley. He usually does the write up on the Sydney clubs when afl.com.au does something that involves a write-up for each of the 18 clubs. For this reason, and because researching and writing about football is the job he is paid to do, he should be at least as well qualified as us to offer an opinion about the Swans. That said, I certainly wouldn't rate his opinion above some other posters here and I would like to see Newman given a run ahead of Cunningham too (depending on how they each go over the pre-season). I think there is a good chance Newman will be selected, else we wouldn't have just promised him a promotion to the senior list and given him a new contract.

I hope that Naismith can keep ahead of Sinkers. Gives our team great balance: Sam's a great tap ruckman with his height and can get around the ground with his mobility while Tippo is a great forward as well as ruck - would be super to see him taking some strong contested marks in the forward 50, combining with Lance and kicking some goals. Then, we'll also a strong ruck in the reserves (since I care about reserves results too!).

They are just a training ground for the real stuff. Good to win of course, but secondary to the team's raison d'etre

I realise that's the way the coaches, club and public at large view it; and of course it is second to the seniors - but I like us to win in the reserves too. Especially when we play GWS! And I reckon our prospects are better next year than this year and we were minor premiers this year.

Newman won the Fothergill so he couldn't have been all that bad surely?

I reckon Dawson is capable of almost anything. I have been watching the reserves replays back and he impresses with his grunt and hard work. He is being played out of position, centre square, wing, HB, to toughen him up. But in the end we all know he will play as a third tall forward. Mind you some of the goals he kicked last season were sensational. Has huge confidence even if 70 out. I love how Reinhardt had him right next to him in a game and automatically dished it off at 55 and Dawson took one step and dobbed it 65 metres into the crowd 20 metres over the goal umpire's head.

So right about Newman and O'Riordan. As soon as the club announces that a player will be permanently upgraded to the seniors list it is obvious the coaches have plans for him. He reminds me of Ross Gibbs, who played for Glenelg in the '80's, his player hardly gets a touch but he gets plenty and goes forward and kicks goals. I remember Gibbs kicking six one day playing in the back pocket. He was a wonderful player and played in two premierships for Glenelg. His son is of course, Bryce Gibbs. Newman has the same ability to get off his man, deliver the ball well and kick goals while playing back pocket. All the time keeping his man to nothing. Forwards muct tremble a bit seeing Newman approaching when he averages 28 from a back pocket or half back and in all probability will kick at least one goal & set up plenty.

Of course they are secondary to the main game but a very strong reserves means a very strong seniors team. Unlike years ago when we either played as Port Melbourne, with players playing a completely different game plan to ours or the NSW/Act comp, ouch, this NEAFL actually has some grunt. Aspley, NT Thunder, Southport and the other three reserves sides put up a wonderful fight when they have a good list available. Early in the season just after we got almost all of our players back our reserves played some sublime footy. Even late when we were only playing 14 listed players the Academy top ups, who train with the Swans main group, all stood up and only lost a GF by 4 points. Mind you we lost on a free kick to the Giants and they had a full list. If we had all of our players available we would have flogged them I believe.

But my point is a strong reserves ensures a strong seniors.

Seeing this is a trading and drafting thread I thought I might just put my two cents in.

There are several key defenders in the draft so we might like to pick one up as a keeper. We also still need a bit of speed so the player with the best disposal efficiency please. We need a tough all rounder, a utility if you like, a mid to third tall with pace and a good delivery percentage. notice i am talking delivery. Well it is important I think to today's footy. the teams that are up the top deliver well those lower don't. Simple really. As Barrass & Parkin say footy is a simple game and those who try to make it difficult get themselves tied up and sacked.
