I find it interesting how small the profits are (or losses for some clubs) for these professional clubs, particularly if AFL disbursements are excluded. The League's profits seem quite healthy, perhaps more of this should go back to clubs (rather than helping GW$ constantly). Do many clubs "invest" their profits into things that will generate a positive cashflow to further improve the bottom line?
I think Ktigers is not too far off the mark. From a simple viewpoint - what use to a club is a big profit really? Its not like its a company looking to pay out huge dividends to its shareholders.

Of course they want to break even and cover expenses - but in a time of equalisation taxes and everything else, there is some fairly significant incentive for clubs to actually minimise profits, by investing every spare dollar into additional equipment, high performance staff, etc etc.

After all, they are a bit like the banks - the AFL these days is not going to let clubs go broke (as they are reliant on them for the major part of their own revenue streams through tv rights), so there is plenty of incentive to push the envelope as far as they can - for ultimately, the success of a footy club is rarely going to be thought of in terms of profits, but is always going to be thought of in terms of Premierships.

Yes, and no. In their defence footy clubs are not regular businesses. They don't purely exist to make their owners wealthier. Footy clubs have this public/community/social function and that stuff costs money. I've noticed that for many years the Swans have fluctuated between making $500K a year and losing $500K a year.

Fair enough if you disagree with Barry and fair enough if you hate his guts. But can we please not turn every thread he posts in into an SCG vs ANZ debate, or a discussion on his outlook on life?

Barry commented that he thought those selections would lose the game. That's waaay too negative in my view. Maybe McGlynn or Marsh could be dropped, but I don't think their replacements would make the difference between winning and losing.

            1. Still 7000 seats available for crows game. Come on swans members.
I don't think you should be alarmed that there might be a small crowd.

How can you "hate" someone on a forum. Especially a footy forum. If you are experiencing feelings of hate you are using social media wrong.

Sure, i feel some on here are mader than cut snakes, but i love the diversity of opinion and the passion to defend it.

7000 was from AFL360 2 days ago, so could be well out of date now.

Isnt the capacity of SCG 55,000 ?

                  Approximately 48,000

I seem to remember if all the stands are redeveloped (hardly likely with the money for stadiums being spent elsewhere in the shorter term) as planned that there was talk of getting it up to around 55,000 or so.

Only 48k? We really need to look into an option for bigger crowds... come to think of it, I have a grand old idea of somewhere that would really be thumbing our noses at GWS!

I guess the selection committee thought McGlynn was a better option than Rose or Towers.
If I was on the coaching panel the message to Benny would be 'Don't ever leave our forward 50. Your job is to closely mark any Crows midfielder who runs into our forward 50. You can also be the crumber from the marking contest and kick goals.

For umpires we have Farmer, Meredith and Jeffrey. Schmitt is the emergency - phew.

Are these umpires ok for us?

Hawthorn has Stevic, Nicholls and Donlon. Can't see the doggies winning with whorethorn having 2 extra players.

I think the #sobrave dogs will outrun the dawks. The hawks have been playing like a 7th-8th placed side all year.
