2017 trading, drafting, list management

The Swans already have too much depth, which is why some of it will be going elsewhere. There's no point in adding players who are not good enough to stay on the list of lesser sides. It's better to use the list spot for a prospect who could turn into good player. Our hit rate is pretty good for low draft picks. The Swans need to move players already on our list from development to senior level when there are scant few spots available.

Even playing only one ruckman, meaning only 1 of Tippett, Sinclair, Naismith or Cameron will play, I figure we only have 2 spots available to pick from the following 6 players: McVeigh, Hayward, Florent, Dawson, Towers and Cunningham. I also think Fox will be in the mix next year as he will be 25 and ready to go. O'Riordan will challenge as well. It's easy to see why Robinson wants out.

Not sure. Maybe it's time for Tippo to lighten off a bit and play as a specialist forward again. He's bulked up in latter years to handle the ruck role. So he's slowed down and his weight is probably half his problem with soft tissue leg injuries. And he should get a better run at it now Mummy won't be concussing him twice a year!

Get rid of the dam free agency compensations. It's such a half baked concept. We've dipped our toes in it and the water is fine - embrace player movement.

Would love to see us trading Sinclair/Rohan/Cunningham/Tippo etc for 2018 2nd and 3rd rounders.. from the sounds of it, it's a hot draft and we'll need points for Blakey.

I would say we're also pretty good at taking fringe players from other sides and turning them into best 22 for us. I think the only reason to go for Keeffe is if we require more depth in KPP stocks which I think we do. If we're happy with our current depth then I agree we're better off going through the draft

If the list management team thinks we need a seasoned tall defender as cover, in case we get an injury to our current crop, there are quite a few experienced tall defenders available this year as free agents - Hansen, Collins, Schade as well as Keeffe (not to mention Talia!) I'm not sure it's an urgent need but of that group, I think Keeffe is the least appealing.

He has been consistently racking up large possessions in the Sanfl and just can't crack a start in the Crows midfield. A 3rd or 4th round would probably get the trade done. I would like to see us give him a go.

A regular emergency for Adelaide?s AFL team, he missed three SANFL matches but still led the club in disposals with 380 at an average of 25 while ranking third for inside 50s (76) in the league and second at the club for contested possessions (143) and clearances (72), illustrating his talent."

Too many chances and too many injuries. Looks like we might be stuck with him again. Nothing personal against him but I reckon 99 per cent of us would breathe a sigh of relief if we could trade him out.

I remember him in his draft year and was one that I wanted us to pick up due to his supposed elite kicking skills (and our complete lack of them). Sounds like he has improved his game at the lower level and in a very good state comp. Good call Flying South!

Like GWS, who've lost Smith and look like losing Kennedy, while Johnson has retired. Sure, he was past it but he still played most of their games last year.

Or Adelaide, who've lost Lever and probably Cameron, and haven't brought anyone in.

Or Geelong, who've lost Motlop, may lose Lang and Menzel, and have lost Lonergan and Mackie to retirement, while their only 'in' looks like being a bloke whose barely played in two seasons and is 33. He may be brilliant for them, or he may spend more time in rehab than out on the field.

Or Richmond, who've been as quiet as we have thus far.

Only Port and Essendon have really splashed out with any results so far. It's hard to know what impact Port's acquisitions will have because I couldn't really make them out in 2017. The gap between their best (beating up on weaker teams) and their worst (rarely being competitive against the better sides - I'm going to ignore their victory against us in r1 given we weren't a "better team" at that point in the season). I think they'll improve, especially with the addition of Rockliff, but they've lost Trengove and Impey who were both pretty decent players.

Essendon have only managed to get one of their mooted trades done thus far. I think they'll complete the Saad trade but it's hard to see how they'll jag Stringer. Even if they do, they've not really addressed their putrid onball division and have lost Watson to retirement.

The reality is, very few teams have done much so far this trade period, and while a few surprises may fall out towards the end of the season, I suspect most clubs will land up not being that active. There aren't really many prized targets on the market. All those garnering the headlines have question marks over them. I think Saad is the most attractive of all players moving, and I'd loved it if we'd been in the market. But we never were, given his move is driven by a desire to be closer to his family in Melbourne. And he's probably going to a club that is already reasonably well served in the position he plays yet has glaring weaknesses elsewhere.

To be fair, we have taken risks with the coaching group and don't have much wriggle room with the playing group. I think we'd do more if we could find a suitor for Tippett, which is understandably difficult.

Trade week isn't over Liz. Geelong will do more moves, that's a given. GWS have a plethora of high draft picks on their list and will gain more this trade period. And Richmond just won a premiership. We did not...
