I think most clubs were waiting for the cba to be signed. Just have to look at the caliber of players ooc to see it. Martin, Fyfe, May, Kelly etc

Probably not. Wrong decision if true & basically just based on money as if drafted in the ND you get paid more than the rookie draft. If it doesn't change the aflpa have failed some of its members. Example is Melican who does everything a senior list player does but gets paid less. Wrong just plain wrong n this is what a union is for.Comment

I thought that this list of who comes out of contract in 2017 was interesting.
It seems up to date: Dawson was there yesterday, but he isn't on their list today. Though I am a bit surprised to see Josh Kennedy listed as a restricted free agent. I'm pretty sure that he is signed on till 2020. Is there something about restricted free agency that means that existing contracts can be ignored?
What I think the page shows, is that we're in better shape than many other clubs. For instance, it seems that Port has 25 players who either have their contracts expire this year, or they enter into free agency. So they have a lot of negotiating to do. Though it could be argued, that there aren't many players there that will have other clubs opening up their war chests. Jasper Pittard may be the most attractive target. And in regards to war chests, while some clubs probably do have plenty of money to spend, our main contract worries of Jones and Reid may not be their first port of call. I think that the GWS list might be viewed by opposition list managers, in much the same way as vultures view a corpse on the savannah.
There is an awful lot of top end talent coming out of contract this year, with Kelly, Hopper, Smith, Coniglio and Williams probably being the main targets, while players like Himmelberg, Finlayson and Matthew Kennedy also seem likely to attract some interest. Since many of these players were high draft picks and have probably become used to earning high wages, then it's easy to see them wanting to test the market further. Plus GWS have a couple of issues that will also restrict their ability to sign all these players. They will probably have to budget for enlarged future contracts for their host of other high draft picks. Also, they can't clear cap space through retiring players, as they probably don't have any highly paid stars, who are reaching the end of their careers: with the possible exception of Heath Shaw, but I'm not sure of if he is being paid all that much and he might have a couple of good years left in him.
So, if the cashed up recruiters fly up to Sydney, hopefully they'll make a left turn at Mascot.Comment

AFL Out of Contract Players in 2017

I'm not a huge fan of bigfooty but it is a very good source for trading n drafting.
In regards to GWS every issue you speak about every club is in the same boat. For example you say they don't have any retiring stars so they can't clear cap space well neither do we as I think McVeigh would not be on huge amount of money. They'll only lose what they are happy to lose. The massive carrot for GWS is they have a good chance at success which players these days know will earn them a lot later on in life. E.g if Lake didn't get his 3 premierships n just finished a good serviceable player at the Bulldogs do you think he'd get a gig on Foxtel? I think probably not. Same for Jordan Lewis. Players are a lot different than years past.
It is literally a business now n just like joe public in the street young professionals are looking to ad to their resume. You add to your cv n cash in later in life.Comment

Kennedy signed for another long term contract at the time he was announced as captain.
The massive $2.1mill increase in salary cap will obviously inflate contracts but at the same time provide relief for a whole host of clubs that were previously near the limit. No club should now lose a required player due to cap pressure but some may choose not to match godfather offers from other clubs but save the money and take the first rounder compo.
Our out of contract dominoes should start to fall before end of season I would hope. Great to see Florent and Dawson recommit.Comment

Could florent next year do as well if not better then Zac jones in the same role
Florent is deceptively fast - his chases this year surprised me because he looks so composed like jake Lloyd in his recruitment video yet he has some good speed
Florent has an amazing lateral vision and great penetrating kick
Florent reminds me of a bob Murphy type player
Zac still makes a fair few costly errors despite all his great work
Therefore do we need jones at all costs ?"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Only the third, making players free agents after 4 years of they were under median wage, seemed radical and I'd expect the clubs to vigourously oppose that.
There was some other change re if you'd signed a contract in the last two years that I didn't understandComment

My reading was that there were three options on the table.

Can any ROW posters clarify how this new pay agreement works. The salary cap has been increased by 20% in the first year of the deal. Does this mean that all players who are under contract automatically have their current rates rates increased next year by 20%? as for example
if say Buddy is on $1million next year does this become $1.2million?All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

Here is a quote from the AFLPA: "While not every player in the competition will have an uplift clause that will make them eligible for the increase to total player payments, every player will benefit financially from this CBA. Players with an uplift clause will automatically receive an increase to their salaries" See more here: CBA ? Frequently Asked Questions - AFL Players.Comment
