WARNING! The following should not be read on a full stomach.

    Josh Willoughby
    Daniel O'Keefe
    Patrick Veszpremi
    Lewis Johnston
    Jed Lamb*
    Dean Towers*

Excluding the 3 picks we got with preferential selection, Mitchell, Heeney and Mills, McVeigh is the only real star 1st round pick. Rohan and Jetta have had their moments, but they really need to lift to say they deserved to be first round picks. I'm quite hopeful that Jones, Hayward* and Florent will become deserving 1st round selections.

*Were technically first rounders, but not taken in the top 20 picks.

That's pretty much the history of our 21st century 1st round draft picks. There are a lot of duds in there. On the upside, we've done very well the past 4 years, albeit with the help of 2 academy guns.

So North are swapping a recent captain for Robbo, and Suns are getting Swallow for a third or fourth round pick? There has to be a catch, surely.

Not that I necessarily believe that trade will happen, but Swallow's trade value is negligible. Roos aren't playing him anymore and he would be on decent coin so they'd be happy to offload him for nix.

I agree they probably won't look for (or expect much) but I'm not sure his salary will have much bearing on things. It's hard to see how the Roos are going to pay their minimum salary cap next season. There will be a lot of front-loading of contracts, you'd think.

Not sure who they have that's worth front-ending!

I have a real problem with the minimum salary cap as it leads to farcical situations. For instance, the Melbourne list at the height of their ineptness under Neeld were getting collectively paid 95% of a list like Hawthorn's. Now that's just ridiculous for what is now basically a business. Players should be paid what they are worth, obviously with a maximum cap but no minimum.

If you're in the academy, I'd assume that as a certain pick like Heeney & Mills that you'd be immersed in the mainstream club a bit more? Twelve months out Nick Blakey has two starkly different choices, move interstate to a struggling bottom club or stay home with family & friends to play for a perennial heavyweight contender and learn from legends like Plugger & Buddy. This time next year will be interesting.

They offered him a spot on the rookie list only, and he was within his rights to decline that and nominate for the draft instead.

I think, if a player did do that but wasn't selected in the national draft, the host club then had the right to automatically put them on the rookie list. It never came to that with Perris, though, because he accepted the rookie list spot.

My reading of the academy rules (with a bit of common sense overlaid) is the same as Meg's. Participation in the academies isn't compulsory, but once a player signs up, he has some obligations to his host club. That should translate into him not having an option as to whether he is nominated by that host club as a potential academy selection (unlike FS players who've taken nothing from their father's club).

Every once in a while we get a top 10 pick which, as you might say, can go a long way to winning premierships. Like our 2009 pick 6 for instance. Or perhaps our pick 5 from 2002. The heaps of praise you've bestowed on those top 10 picks is immeasurable.
So you are telling me the only half decent first round pick we got value for was towers.?
He is #thedifference but otherwise very poor hit rate for the swans.

No way we will ditch AJ now after keeping him on the list for so long. Put him on the rookie list and upgrade as the season goes on if form permits.

You know you're @@@@e at high draft pick selections when Towers is the standout of that bunch. Out of the first four I think Veszpremi was the only one to play seniors, that being only one game.

Veszpremi played a handful of games for the Swans. He looked exciting early on but was never able to get the endurance necessary to play, even back then when the physical demands on players were less than they are now.

Johnston also played a game or two for the Swans. I think he made his debut against North at Ethihad and kicked a nice goal.

Most of those were also given a chance at another club/s but never made the grade as recycled players either. Florent & Hayward look like being long term players so hopefully the first round curse is cured!
