Even though I think McVeigh has been in our top 5 players this year, it's probably in everyone's best interest if he got a Hodge-like deal to go to the Suns. McVeigh gets a smooth transition to his post playing career, the Suns get a leader of high quality and the Swans get a senior playing spot for any one of several deserving young players.

It feels to me like his manager stirring the pot. Although Josh Kennedy has suggested McVeigh should play on next year, contradicting his coach!

Longmire said it was the plan for the Swans? best and fairest winner and All-Australian to retire at the end of the year.
?He?s been really good, at the moment he?s retiring at the end of this year, that?s what the plan is,? Longmire said.
?He?s been playing well, he?s really contributing every week.
?The plan was set at the end of last year and we haven?t spoken about any adjustment to that at all at this point.?
But teammate Josh Kennedy said the Swans may have to reassess.
?It might be back to the drawing board for the powers that be at the Swans,? Kennedy said.
?Jarrad has been fantastic. He?s a champion of the game.
?He?s been back to his best and really leading that defence.?Comment

Melbourne based powerhouse interested in Jarrad McVeigh
If Macca does wind up going elsewhere, I think he'd be better off going to get exposure to a different club environment. Dew being at the Suns cuts both ways - there's the familiarity but that means there's less exposure to what's new and different and other ways of doing things for Macca. I hope he'll stay on as a coach with us. If his form really holds up I wouldn't necessarily be against him playing on, if he wants to, but at this stage I'm thinking he will and should retire at season's end.All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

Tom Brown on triple M this morning has now soften on Darcy Moore going to the Swans, basing it on the noise coming more from Darcy's manager. He appears to be fixated with the Swans, because he now has gut feeling that the Swans will land a real big fish at season's end, Jeremy McGovern being one possibility. Eddie McGuire responded by saying the Swans have their own free agency, inciting they land a big fish every 2 years going all the way back to Plugger & Roos. What a laugh!!! I suppose Hawthorn doesn't count!Comment

Hey boys and girls.
There is a great podcast Junktime #167.
It's a interview with Ryan 'Fitzy' Fitzgerald, he played for the swans at the turn of the century.
Some of the stories about Rocket Eade will make you rewind the tape and listen again.
Very funny and tragic, download and enjoy!!doof-doofComment

In regard to McVeigh, was not part of his 1 year extension deal walking into a Swans coaching role at the end of it? Firstly, why would he want to cut his teeth at the Suns when he can do that here? Secondly, if he and the Swans think he is worth another playing year, it will happen....at the Swans.Comment

Rhyce Shaw seems the logical choice for next head coach to me, but with Horse at only 47 y.o. the heir apparent could be long mired in the stable of assistant coaches.
I don't think McVeigh would make a good head coach. I can't say why. It's just a feeling.Comment

If he wants to play on next year and the club doesn't think it has room on its list, I am sure he'll listen to offers. And there's no doubt that a club like the Suns desperately needs players/coaches with experience of success and driving high standards.
It may also depend on what the club has said to him regarding the availability of a spot on its coaching panel when he decides to retire from playing. And whether he wants to experience life in another club environment. I imagine a few clubs would be interested in his coaching services.Comment

What if Jarrad McVeigh is the successor to John Longmire? If that is the case he won't be going anywhere. Why wouldn't we be developing our own home grown person to take over. That way we don't deviate from what has been successful for so long. Longmire did a long apprenticeship before he took over. Maybe that's why John is saying it was agreed on at the end of last season. Looks the ideal successor. Remember he was in the box for a game last season.Comment

Great to see Ronke signed on for another two years. I am really impressed with his pace, pressure, and skill.Comment
