Mid-year trade table: Who your club should target - AFL.com.au

They?ve suggested we chase Darcy Moore, Mitch McGovern and Jayden Hunt and look to trade Aliir, Nic Newman and Dean Towers.

Last two probably correct. I think we have plenty of outside speed. Could do with explosive speed, good users by foot, and another ruckman.

3 names mentioned in the article are Tom Nicholls, Marc Pittonet and Brayden Preuss.
Hunt would be a good fit. He's spending time in the Magoos but Melbourne will probably want to keep him.

Absolutely. Trade him whilst he still has some currency.

We need to prepare for when Kennedy retires, Hannebery is struggling with OP and I don't feel Parker has the body type to cope with this for long periods. Either target those types in the draft and/or go after a ready made one. Our midfield would be awesome with Wines in it
I've said it before but we should have kept Mitchell. He's the best inside mid in the Comp.

      • I like Hunt as well and I'm not quite sure why he's been omitted from the Melbourne senior squad, but it seems to be form based. In any case, we just recruited both Stoddart and Ling who can perform similar roles and have extended their contracts till 2020, so it seems like we're covered in that area.
      • Sam Reid is contracted until 2021. His wife and dogs are from Sydney. I don't think he's going anywhere.
      • I don't know if Mitchell is the best inside midfielder, but he's certainly up there. He'll probably win the Brownlow this year, which will make many have second thoughts about the trade. He's by far the best inside mid at Hawthorn, but only the 3rd best at Sydney. I really like Mitchell, so I'm not knocking him as a player. I'm only defending the trade, because we got something we needed more of and gave up something we have an excess of. Trading Mitchell opened the door for Hewett to play on ball and we see how well that's turned out. It appears that Ollie Florent, who we got with the draft pick acquired via the Mitchell trade, will be a very good footballer. He's different from Tom and is a better fit for the direction our game plan is heading. There are rule changes coming soon that will be more suited to outside running players. There may be an increase in the distance a player can run before bouncing the ball from 15 to 20 metres. The AFL want more scoring, less congestion, hence less influence from stoppage specialists.

If you believe Sam Edmund then things not going well with Jake Lloyd?s contract and Nic Newman unhappy (unsurprisingly)

Sam Edmund provides Tom Lynch, Jake Lloyd, Nic Newman contract update

?Jake Lloyd, unhappy up at the Swans with a contract offer that has been made his way,? he said.

?He wants some more and a new offer is not great either.?

Former Melbourne captain Garry Lyon says the Swans offered Lloyd ?thin sheets?.

Defender Nic Newman is also ?unhappy? at the Swans, according to Edmund.

Lloyd we up the ante and keep as you don't let guys who are 23 and top three in your last B&F leave. Please do not let Lloyd's contract impasse be due to us looking at Moore!

Newman almost certainly a trade out because he's not getting games, for probably a pick upgrade.

I've been thinking about trades a lot recently and e more I think about it the more I reckon we don't need a KPP (McGovern) unless he's a free agent. The only part of our game that is not right near the top of the comp is getting the ball inside 50. I don't think we can keep winning games whilst losing the inside 50 differential...teams will work us out eventually (soon). If we righted this aspect we would be the top rated team. So what we actually need is midfielders who can win contested ball and get it forward with speed....and/or...big bodied with silky skills. However nless we can get someone of the ilk of Rory Sloane or Josh Kelly we should just go to the draft...very happy to trade Newman and Marsh...do not let Lloyd or Alliir go and under NO circumstances pick up Moore...he is a dead set spud. (Mind you I thought that about Rhyce Shaw!). Please don't trade Reid unless it is to get a Sloane or a Kelly or a Gaff

The Lloyd situation reminds me eerily of the Tom Mitchell 2016 situation. I think
Most of us would dearly love to have him stay but he is being offered good coin elsewhere by the sound of it.

Hope Jake Lloyd stays, but if he goes then so be it. If a player is no longer in the red and white then he is only an opposition player from then on and we move on.

To have macca retire and lloyd go would massively hurt our transitions

Both seriously cool customers / great decision makers

We may have to see who retires and who is traded before being able to offer Lloyd a better deal. He deserves a good contract, I hope it's with us

I imagine that if Macca retires (and I suspect he will if we get a flag) we can probably meet Lloyd's wishes.
He reminds him of the guys, close-set, slow, and never rattled, who were play-makers on the team. (John Updike, seeing Josh Kennedy in a crystal ball)

At this stage if the above happens it would be best case scenario for us.

I think that's the wrong way around.

Macca has been a great player for the Swans and is still playing good football. His best has been better than Lloyd's best (by a reasonable margin) and even this year, he's probably been slightly more important for us, when on the field.

But he's close to the end of his career. Even if he wants to play on next year and can eek another year out of his body, he's still a short term option.

I'd have thought the priority should be re-signing Lloyd. Within limits, of course. For all his consistency, cool head and reliability, he's not a superstar. Just a very dependable B grade contributor. But if they can reach agreement with Lloyd at a salary reasonable to both parties, they should do that. And then if McVeigh wants to play on next year, the club should look to see whether they can fit him into the list and the cap. If not, he can retire or go elsewhere. But their relative ages surely has to make the Lloyd situation a priority over McVeigh?
