The 'fake news' trend doesn't just exist in the political sphere, its been alive in the sporting arena for as long as sports have been played.

For every story with some sort of valid 'source', there are just as many stories with no 'sauce' to go with them. Some papers/media outlets may be more reputable than others, but like those paid to comment on the game, there are plenty who have no idea what they are on about, and simply will spill whatever vomit comes into their mouth/fits their agenda, no matter whether there is any resemblance of truth involved.

Its naive to think that truth in journalism is held at anything near the standard it might have been 50 years ago.
How true. Standards have dropped dramatically.

Sadly true and it controls a lot of peoples' lives, especially in Melbourne.

This began when I mentioned the Age Realfooty podcast suggesting that Horse and Dew fell out last year, in reference to pupil defeats the teacher, but now appears to have metastasised into "When a team is losing, the media try and come up with a story."

What convinces you they fell out?

I don't think Mel's comment was specifically in response to that podcast, but rather to the various commentaries offered by luminaries like King, Brereton, Connolly and others trying to explain, or comment on, the drop off in performance since the bye.

              Really?

I don't recall any media outlets calling out Longmire at the start of last year. I'm pretty sure they went with our long injury list as the reason for our poor start. This was pretty generous IMO as the list at the time was exaggerated.

Even now Longmire isn't getting anywhere near the heat that other struggling coaches have in recent times (i.e. Buckley, Hardwick). The only articles that have questioned him are by the media personalities who specialise in writing about tactics/game plans etc. The journos who write more generally about the game (i.e. Robbo, Ralph etc.) have given him a free ride.

Perhaps because he is a proven premiership coach with a finals-only record.

Not a reputable publication any more sadly. Will deteriorate further now Channel 9 has taken over. Joined the gossip brigade.

Thanks Liz that's exactly what I was responding to.

There was discussion about him not being flexible and not having imagination and being stuck in his ways.

Pretty well what is being said by a number of posters on this forum.

FWIW I think he's probably earnt the chance to turn things around next season, but the existing game plan simply is not good enough to win a premiership with. If he can't adjust it next year then he should go.

I think the concerning thing for some of us is that there hasn't been the foresight to make change earlier

                            Why is it ridiculous?
To be fair, this thread has turned into a far more intelligent discussion of our style and the coaching of the team than the original question suggested it would. My issue is not with discussing how our team is playing and being coached, but with a sensationalised question that looked like it was trying to provoke a witch hunt. If that was not your intention then I accept that.

I acknowledge the OP could have been phrased better, but agree that its a discussion that needs to be had.

I'd be happy to edit thread title but can't work out how to

Matthew Lloyd’s had a crack at us and I think he’s reasonably on the money

                                Category: | Herald Sun

SYDNEY is playing a brand of football reflective of a bottom-four club.

The Swans tumbled from fourth to ninth on the ladder after their 43-point loss to Essendon last Friday night, but they were in free fall well before that.

These results do not come as a total surprise.
