The good players were very good indeed. If we don’t see a couple of them in the senior team next week, something odd is going on.
I've been really impressed by the improvement in Wicks this year. I was a little nonplussed when he was selected as the one from the U19 group to win a rookie spot but he's showing why he was given the opportunity. He displayed some really good pace today that I've not noticed from him before. And that's to go with a high work rate and some neat skills.
Bell is another who is coming on in leaps and bounds. He uses the ball pretty well anywhere behind about 70m out from goal. It would be great if he could just become a little more composed kicking the ball into the forward line.
McInerney was particularly impressive in the second and third quarters. Maybe he's not quite ready for senior football yet, but it seems that the short taste he got has given him a bit of confidence.
And I am also enjoying the work of Pink in defence. He looks far more suited back there than in the forward line. He's also added a fair bit of size to his frame in the past couple of seasons.
Some of the top ups also contributed strongly. As with last week, I loved the buzz and work rate of Cooper Kilpatrick. Barkley's marking job on Sproule after quarter time was impressive indeed. And the scoreboard contributions from the likes of Pawle, Tyson (how good was that kick), and Schumack were handy. One of the guys (who might have been on NEAFL debut) that the commentators seemed to like - Isiah Olsen - didn't get a whole heap of ball but he didn't seem overawed by the game and showed a bit of creativity. Very impressive when you take into account that he doesn't turn 17 until September this year.Last edited by liz; 28 April 2019, 01:31 AM.Comment

Agree in full with Liz' assessment of the game, especially my surprise about how good Wicks has become. I didn't expect him to become such a tackling machine.
I would add Stoddart to the list of impressive players. He didn't get the possession numbers of some of the others, but his closing speed, marking, decision making and accurate kicking really stood out. I'd have Stoddart replace Mills in defence and move Mills to the midfield.Comment

I feel our defence is very unsettled atm. The only ones I feel sure about are Aliir and Rampe. I would like to add COR and Stoddart, which brings us up to 4. Add another tall; I was hoping it would be Melican in the long run, but Reid and McCartin are preferable while Melican remains in his current poor form. I'm not sure about Thurlow. I would hope that he can work his way into the side and make a solid contribution. I think with COR and Stoddart, Lloyd could move into the midfield or half forward. I like his delivery into the forward line, something we are desperately in need of improving. Lloyd and Cunningham are both possibilities if we go with a shorter back line. That's 9 candidates to fill 6 spots. It's going to be an all season project working this out.Comment

For once I think I pretty much agree with the best players list. Though I would have snuck COR ahead of Fox.

If the club has no intention of participating in the mid-season draft, there may be a spot available (depending on the interpretation of whether McLean replaced Tippett or Maibaum - though even that may not matter.) However, if they do wish to pick someone, there's no spot available on the senior/Cat A list. That means putting someone on the LTIL. Now that they've changed the rule so that Cat A rookies are all available for selection, I have no idea if you can place a Cat A rookie on the LTIL in order to promote a Cat B rookie. If you can, Tucker may be an option, depending on where he is with his rehab. Unlike freeing up a spot to draft in a player from outside the club, the LTIL only requires that player not play for at least eight weeks, not that they be out for the season. Naismith is the other candidate, though I suspect the club is hoping he isn't still eight weeks away from at least resuming in the NEAFL.
Ronke is a puzzle. He seems like a very level headed and humble young man, and was reported to have been a strong runner during the pre-season. So his current form has to be down to confidence, combined with the challenges of playing in a dysfunctional forward line. Last year, not just in the Hawks game but in many other games too, he knew exactly where to run to pounce on loose balls. And he applied great pressure. He's doing neither now.
It's not unusual for a player to have a down year after initially breaking out, so I have hopes that he'll rediscover his mojo in the medium term. But right now, it seems a bit unkind continuing to play him while he is so down on confidence.Comment

COR, Fox, Rose and Stoddart are all ahead of Wicks for senior selection, IMO.Comment

Agree - I watched most of this game and COR was BOG.Comment

Does anyone know why Rose was out. I presume he was an extra reserve for the main game knowing that Buddy was out. If an extra reserve I would have played him before Ronke though having Ronke sit out would have not made much sense either. He would have been better in the NEAFL but then the other emergencies Fox and Macinerny also needed game time as they sat out the previous round.Comment

I really can't see why he can't be a like for like for as he can play the part of a quick high pressure forward and kick goals as well, whereas the others don't fit that role as well. Not opposed to them coming in though; there are a number of places up for grabs. We have them where we want them, everything is going according to plan!Comment

Blakey is struggling in the seniors. There's a big gap in quality between Blakey and Wicks. It's a big step up to the seniors. McInerney is doing well in the reserves, but I think he needs at least a year to make a positive impact in the AFL.Comment
