Because if the Swans don't get Daniher we'll have pick 5 which we'll use on Tom Green, forcing them to match, rather than getting another player with 6 and then matching a later bid for Green. There's still Adelaide with pick 4, but I think they are more likely to go for an outside player than Green.
Category: | Herald Sun
The Herald Sun understands that, outside of GWS, the Swans and Crows are the only clubs to visit Green’s family home in Canberra, and both walked away super impressed.
The Swans view Green as a possible successor to midfield warrior Josh Kennedy while the Crows have a reputation of holding clubs to account on draft night...
Green, 18, averaged 33 disposals and 159 SuperCoach points in four NAB League matches this season and has three younger brothers, who also qualify for the GWS academy because they live in Canberra.Comment

Another good reason not to trade pick 5. I just want this nightmare to evaporate!
GWS will be working big time to get pick 3 from the Dees to ensure they get the double dip. Problem is they'll need to now give up pick 6 and will struggle to pay for Green when he gets bid on at pick 4/5 unless they do some late trading for a couple of picks in the 20s. They may have outsmarted themselves this time, we hope!Comment

The play seems so obvious. Hold 5, pick the 'Josh Kennedy successor', see if a fit and in form Daniher wants to come in 12 months, move bloody on.Comment

To position that as "severely disadvantaging" GWS seems twisted in the extreme.
Maybe tomorrow they can publish an article about how we are "severely disadvantaging" St Kilda by not just delisting Jones so the Saints can pick him up as a DFA. Or "severely disadvantaging" Carlton by not trading them Papley for a 5th round draft pick. Or severely disadvantaging just about any other club by not offering up Mills, Heeney, Dawson, Florent, Hayward, McCartin, Aliir et al for a raft of 4th round draft picks.
In any case, if we do trade pick 5 to Essendon, Green fits a need for them too. There's plenty of time for the Dodo to travel to Canberra to Chez Green, where he, too, might come away mightily impressed by Tom.Comment

They (ie GWS) will still match. Just means they won't be able to draft another top 5 player first. Unless they can do a deal with Melbourne (or maybe Adelaide).

Why don't GWS trade picks 6 and 40 for our picks 5 and 54? We can use pick 40 or 44 for Taylor and take the other one to the draft. It makes it a little less painful if we have to give our first pick to Essendon. We could offer Essendon picks 6+40+Hayden McLean. Take it or leave it.Last edited by Ludwig; 14 October 2019, 06:49 PM.Comment

Yeah, but you're forgetting that some of his earlier RWO musings, have been anthologised into a couple of volumes: 'The Barassi Line Is In Thailand, Now', and 'Centre Square, Golden Triangle'.Comment

Raphus cucullatus* is particularly strange subspecies.
Thought to be extinct. Hibernates all year until early October, when for a couple of weeks he makes everyone he comes in contact want to kill him, eventually forcing him back into hibernation.
*Modern taxonomy: Tullamarinus dodorusComment

Article in the HUN behind paywall suggesting GWS will be severely disadvantaged if Swans don't land Daniher. Can I humbly suggest that a way to avoid this happening is to send Patton to Essendon instead of Hawthorn. The injectors say they want a big forward to replace the pubis one. Deal done.
In the same issue of the paper, Jay Clark surmising a three way deal involving picks 5 and 9 to North for Ben Brown who goes to Essendon who then trade JD to the Swans. This he said would be win-win-win. (maybe it would be better to for the Swans to just take BB?)rofl
"You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment
