I agree it's still more likely they will match the bid. It's also more likely that they will complete a pick trade after trade period and pre-draft to move up the order ahead of our pick. But if neither of those things happen, he's perfect for us and our needs and universally reported to be an excellent player!
If we bid on Green at pick 5 GWS will match if they want him because it won't use up all the points value of pick 6.

I also see that Hawthorn has completed a trade for Patton and Melbourne has gained North Melbourne's pick 8 in a pick swap.

Yes, but there is some surplus capacity there more useful next year. So this week or draft night, we'll need to make use of them

The compo pick will be at the end of the first round. ie pick 19. (Assuming we offer around $700k p.a.)

          (Hi IU2 - missed you!!)
Now, hush. Goodesy was a very late pick.

Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

It would, if they used pick 6 to match a bid at 5. Although you get something back where a second or third pick is used to match a deal, you don't get anything back from the first pick used. But clubs always arrange it so their first available pick isn't enough. If the Giants went into the draft still holding pick 6 and a bid came for Green before that pick, they would immediately trade down that pick 6 to something worth less than the points they needed to match Green, and get something else back from another club.

A gold wrapped gift....nice to be a Victorian club picking off northern clubs talent.

Have Hawthorn got a plant in the Giants list management department. First Scully and now Patton, both for next to nothing.

                    Was Patton out of contract?

No in fact he had a big contract which is why the Giants were willing to let him go so cheaply so they could spend the money on re-signing Whitfield and Cameron

No. He was on a big fat contract and clearly the Hawks knew that the Giants were desperate to clear his cap space to help them with their upcoming big signings. Still odd that another club couldn't offer more than a 4th round pick, but maybe there wasn't another club willing to take a punt on tying up their salary cap on a big player coming off three knee recos.

Since the Hawks have the cap space (apparently), he's a very low cost, decent return kinda choice for them.

Can you do that once the bid is confirmed? Or only beforehand like we did last year?

The trade works for everyone. The Giants get him off their books and free up cash to re-sign Cameron and Whitfield.
The Hawks get him cheap from a draft pick perspective but are burdened with a heavy contract (that they can accommodate) and the risk of him not coming good physically.

He's cheap if he can be as dominant as his #1 pick status suggests. But based on what we've seen, how the game has evolved, and his knees.. he is more of a punt than Scully.

Im starting to get the impression that salary caps only apply to clubs outside of Victoria.

I believe that’s draft tampering and illegal. That could be part of the reason.
