So if you meet a friend when he is in your town and others put their own presumptions on to that he's saying that's your fault?
    What a @@@@ wit.
    a) I'm glad it's all over.
    b) I'm glad neither the Daniher nor the Papley trade went ahead.
    c) I look forward to our young team growing together and improving. I doubt that we'll be a major force next year, but as others have said, we can be patient.
    d) Charlie Gardiner is not at ease in public speaking, it seems to me, but I thought his manner actually made for a fine contrast to the media hype.
    e) While I completely agree with Bexl's logic, it has to be said that Barrett knows his job. News these days isn't about news, it's about entertainment; football journalism in Melbourne isn't about truth, it's about getting people reading, listening, watching. Which is what many of us did ... which brings me back to a).

Interesting that Fox in its online wrap-up has Essendon as one of the winners of trade period, and Daniher as one of the losers. (Swans not mentioned).

Accurate I think. Swans didn't really lose, but it's definitely not the best for Joe. Pretty sure everyone will move on pretty quickly for now, but it means another year of the circus, which he must be keen to avoid. I suspect that if he doesn't re-sign with Essendon in the first month or two of the year, he'll either come to the Swans or go to the draft.

Edit: In the Fox report card they rate Sydney as a C (didn't do much - needed to do more to address midfield). Harsh, but not unreasonable.

Essendon they rate as C+. Sounds about right to me in that they achieved a very similar outcome to Swans in that they didn't end up doing much, but as Daniher means more to them than to us, I value a "no trade" as slightly better for them.

I know it's from a few years ago but Lewis Taylor looked pretty handy as U18 prospect playing as a midfielder during the carnival for Vic Country. He obviously started his AFL career off well too as he took out the NAB Rising Star ahead of the Bont and others.

I wonder if we have told him that we want to give him an opportunity to play more midfield minutes? Certainly shows good skills with both feet in these highlights!

Getting Taylor should allow Papley to spend more time in the midfield. Taylor is a clever player with good skills and vision. He might be better than Papley a small forward, but Papley is more of a player that can impact both forward and getting possessions in the midfield.

If Naismith can stay on the park we should do a lot better at stoppages. Our midfield is fine, but we have to wait for 2021 to see the real benefit of the drafting program we've had.

Maybe Flanders, maybe Kemp, but we should get a good contested ball winning midfielder with pick 5. We have 3 other decent picks and our record shows that we will likely find a couple of good players (maybe not stars) with those picks. Then we have Campbell and Gulden coming next year. Our midfield should be stacked with talent by the start of 2021. There's not much going out; only JPK.

Next year should be an exciting one. I think we have a good shot to make the 8. It will be interesting when we play Essendon. I wonder if Daniher will play. Richmond, GSW, Brisbane, WC, Bulldogs, Collingwood and Geelong look to be fighting it out for the top spots next year. We could challenge a few of those next year if we get a good run with injuries. Hawthorn could be a challenger too, with Mitchell returning and Patton in the forward line. It's a tough competition. A single big trade is not enough to jump the queue in one year. I like the way we're going about our rebuild and I think it will pay off.

Interesting, detailed piece from Jake Niall. Silly opening two pars aside, it is good.

Sets a key part of the record straight:

"The reality of the Daniher non-deal is that it was Daniher, not the Swans, who drove the request for him to be traded. Sydney were more than happy to have Joe – as any club would – but their ardour for Daniher had clear limits, and they did not buckle."

AFL happy to push the fake news Barrett narrative with a video titled 'Barrett slams Swans:'"That's really ordinary form"' embedded in the trade wrap article below.

Like many here, relieved that we kept Papley and stayed away from Daniher....for now.

i found it interesting that Dodo confirmed we NEVER had pick 5 on the table yet the likes of Lloyd who was adamant we had 5 & 25 on the table and simultaneously Maclure claiming EFC rejected 5 & 9 saying it wasn't enough.

I also wonder if the club more or less testing the waters this year seeimg how much they would get for Papley and offer to get Daniher, because next year every chance they'll demand more than a top 10 pick for Papley (should he still want to leave) and have upper hand for Daniher as RFA should he still want to come to us.

Glad we stuck strong on Paps and Daniher.

Happy we replaced Jones with a decent (and quick) player.

It was a great study on the amount of crap the AFL media can go on with. Interestingly the Swans camp stayed pretty mum throughout. I know who I'd choose to listen to.
Yes, that way what I found interesting. Almost there the entire AFL site commentary, and some of the other media, reported things from the viewpoint of the Victorian clubs. We heard plenty from the Victorian list managers, we heard plenty from Victorian journalists and ex-players, but we heard pretty well nothing from our management or the management of the other northern clubs. It almost seemed like there was a concerted effort, to construct a reality, where what Essendon, Carlton, etc, were offering, were considered and reasonable positions, rather than bull@@@@ ambit claims.

So glad that we seemed not to be affected by all that, and didn't get railroaded into dodgy deals.

I wonder how Papley is feeling tonight? I assume that he is still partying with his Swans mates overseas?

Hawthorn has its strategy of trying to rebuild by taking massive risks on busted players. They have some ok talent coming through but hardly a hugely sustainable circumstance either.

We will improve next year - mark my words. We lost a lot of close games this year.
You say that about Geelong but they have 3 picks inside the first 24 this year, where we have 2 in the top 25 so I would think they will be pretty handy for young talent going forward. They also have WC first rounder next year. They also got a very talented player in Jack Steven for a lower pick than we used for Lewis Taylor and then nabbed Josh Jenkins for bugger all as well which will help them now as they are in the window.

I wouldn't mind us pulling off some of the deals they have over the past few years!

Talk of Melbourne doing a pick swap with GWS for picks 3 and 6. I wonder if we could do a pick 3 and 5 swap.

Gives us first pick after GCS and if we used it on Green it would stuff up GWS plans as well as giving us a very decent mid. Or a crack at Caleb Serong.

So, Daniher to Hawthorn next year, for a fourth round pick and a coffee with Clarkson?
