Even the ABC assesses our trade period as disappointing and on a par almost with Carlton. While I don’t agree with that it seems apparent that general media consensus is that we “failed” in regard to Daniher.

Yes I think Taylor’s inclusion might allow Papley to get some serious midfield minutes next year , especially with Jones gone. Then my prophecy of Papley winning the Brownlow one day is a step closer to fruition. He still has a lot of improvement in him I feel.

Our list managers and the RWO consensus believe we got the best outcome in the circumstances, while recognising that another outcome could have been good as well, but the circumstances to reach that outcome were not available. The media have demonstrably shown that they know little about what's really going on with the Swans. I would say that the rest of us who are close to the situation know what's best.
The media scored St. Kilda's highly in the trade period because they managed to get all their targets across the line. But at what price? And do the choices they made fit their list requirements? For a team far from premiership contention, they might suffer from the void of the next 2 drafts.
If someone went up to the roof of an office building, got on the ledge as if to jump, but then backed away and came down, the media would call that a failure, by promising so much but failing to follow throw with a reasonable performance. The media would be really pissed off being invited to broadcast the big event, talking about for a week, predicting various outcomes, only to find that show had been cancelled, leaving them looking foolish for having promoted the show to the public.Comment

How is this a win for Essendon? The spin on this crap from Melbourne is incredible. Sydney waits 12 months and, I predict, gets Joe for less than what Essendon was offered this time around. Essendon says they can match. Sure...but watch how the next 12 months unfolds...
The STAR of the team says he wants OUT and tries to orchestrate it. He is stuck in the footy bubble he wants out of (like playing for Toronto in the NHL). The team says they hope Joe “falls back in love with the team”. That is an admission...he doesn’t love the team. Now, EVERY DAY, Joe will be asked...”are you happy?”. “Do you love the team again?”. EVERY DAY his teammates will be asked “How is Joe? Has he discussed his plans? Is he staying?”. The one thing sports teams need to avoid is outside distractions and now Essendon, of all teams considering their recent history, has a poison pill in the locker room.
This is the sort of thing that destroys a locker room. The players are pros but they are still human and this situation will wear on them like nobody’s business. The only way out is if Joe resigns (unlikely) for an unworldly sum which, considering his health issues, could hamper the Bombers for years to come.
This situation is toxic. I predict they miss the eight. But they apparently “won” this trade period.Comment

No one underestimates how difficult it is to attract talent to Sydney. This is a huge challenge when it comes to trading.
for me the argument ain’t about JD and what picks or not what picks. That’s yesterday’s news and we couldn’t make it happen at the right price just like a few other players / clubs in the afl ie Jack Martin etc
The for me argument is much greater then JD. It’s about :
1. Are we giving our squad the greatest opportunity to succeed in the short and medium term via the trade and or draft?”
2. What is our trajectory towards the top4 in 2020?
——-
I was stoked with Blakey and Rowbottom via the draft last year
I was super annoyed by our 2018 weak trading
I am obviously super frustrated by our 2019 trade strategy. The strategy does not make sense in balancing out our loss of experience and decision makers ie Lewis Taylor in for Macca, Grundy, Jack, Smith, Jones out. We have lost super experienced players and the last few years have not replaced them. I thought we would in 2018 / 19 minimum.
2018 Trade period - Moore, van den berg and tom langdon and we failed..... but bringing in Thurlow, Menzel and Clarke was beyond frustrating.....imagine if we were following a European soccer team or any other team and our recruitment was signing the equivalent of Thurlow, Menzel and or Clarke ........ FMD !!!!
2019 - We didn’t appear to have anything else compelling to ensure we are giving our squad the best chance to bounce from 15th on the ladder. How have we increased our talent in 2019 so we are giving 2020 the best chance of success. If Brisbane can get lachie Neale why can’t we make an equivalent happen. I’ve lived in Brisbane and it ain’t a big draw card.
I) Clearances and the ruck are a major problem and what have we done to remedy ?
II) Our FF is 33yrs of age in a few months and struggling with soft tissue injuries 2019. So either we go down the richmond path and add a couple more dangerous emerging small forwards like richmond 2017, geelong 2019, Collingwood 2019 etc or we bring in another tall experienced FF.
What have we done to remedy and be pushing towards the top4 in 2020 with the greatest possibility ?
It doesn’t look like we are future proofing at all for 2020/2021 !"be tough, only when it gets tough"

I think the main take-away from the trading period for me is that we wanted to take pick 5 to the draft.
Fair enough. It's rare for us to have such an early draft pick and we shouldn't have one again soon. So it makes sense to use it to draft an elite midfielder. That's exciting.
The strategy depends on the likes of Hewett, Dawson and Florent continuing to take big steps towards running our midfield in 2-3 years.Comment

I think the swans team showed great resolve . Didn’t get bullied into a poor trade , offered a pretty fair deal for JD ( admittedly not ‘overs’ but why pay overs when you can get for free in 12 months ? ). The bombers held firm too as is their right , and we didn’t let Papley go for effectively unders. We either change his mind about leaving or increase his currency for next year ( or the year after , or year after etc ). We now got to the draft with a top 5 pick , we have the ability to package up 25 and 32 and try to move up from there also maybe for another late first round pick, or even try to move 5 up to 3. And most importantly it allows us to discuss potential draftees for the next few weeksgreat result ! I am stoked !

Yes, that way what I found interesting. Almost there the entire AFL site commentary, and some of the other media, reported things from the viewpoint of the Victorian clubs. We heard plenty from the Victorian list managers, we heard plenty from Victorian journalists and ex-players, but we heard pretty well nothing from our management or the management of the other northern clubs. It almost seemed like there was a concerted effort, to construct a reality, where what Essendon, Carlton, etc, were offering, were considered and reasonable positions, rather than bull@@@@ ambit claims.
So glad that we seemed not to be affected by all that, and didn't get railroaded into dodgy deals.Comment

ABC now has ordinary footy coveage. Malthouse and MMclure bad as anybodyComment

Well done to Kinnear and the team. Sensible, mature and stuck to your guns.
Happy we've kept our top picks and our contracted players.
Essenscum must be rapt they kept their contracted player too. It will be interesting to note his performance next year, should be play, of course.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.Comment

I view trade week as an opportunity to improve our team immediately and I don't think we have succeeded. Improvement next year must come from those players in the 30-60 games bracket taking their game to a new level.
I'm pleased Papley is staying, disappointed Jones has gone and I think Lewis Taylor will be a useful addition.
Funnily enough a couple of Essendon supporting work colleagues, despite having said Daniher is worth everything and more are now disappointed he is staying with them!Comment
