There's a strong possibility that if we are interested in Daniher it will be as a ruckman not as a permanent forward. That is where he would have his greatest value for us. The fact that he can go forward adds to his worth.Those who have the greatest power to hurt us are those we love.Comment

Getting Daniher would set back the club for years to come. We can forget finals for at least another 5 or 6 years. Not only is he an unnecessary extra in a forward line already having problems fitting in all the talls, but his big salary will drive other good young players from the club. It will stall the development of our younger key forwards and likely lead to a loss of one ore more. We can use another midfielder, not someone competing with Buddy for goals.
The interesting thing is that we don't need a key forward, but Essendon really do. The whole Papley/Daniher thing is one of the most counter-intuitive trades I've heard for some time.
Put this scene in your mind: Longmire telling KB that what the club really needs is a tall forward to help out Buddy, Reid and McCartin. And not to worry that when the ball comes to ground we won't have our best crumbing forward anymore.

Doesn't have the tank to be a ruckman.Comment

A few RWO contributes have judged Cody Hirst as a delist. I hope this doesn't happen.
He has improved massively since being drafted midseason, especially if you take into account he hasn't had the benefit of a full preseason and had to adjust to professional footy on the run.
He has electric pace, accurate kick and definitely can sniff out a goal. Dare I say, I sense a little bit of Paps in the way he goes about his work. By the looks of him, he has even managed to put a bit of bulk onto his frame.
His numbers are not huge yet but what he does is quality and given some time, hopefully will be racking up some decent numbers.
Imagine if a good number of Hirst, Ling, Stoddart, Foote and McInerney come good - we will be the fastest team in the league!Comment

I agree, why Joe Daniher? He's not a consistent performer.
I can see us doing some complicated pick trading to get more pick points in the 2020 draft (two academy players).
Clubs that may be keen to do a deal:
* St Kilda (They may be willing to give up pick 5 to get Jones if we gave them a 2nd-round or 3rd-round pick as well.)
* GWS (May be interested in a trade involving their two first-round picks (11 and 13) for pick 4 or 5, plus some other pick swaps. They get more points this year, we get them back next year.)
* Essendon (They lack a first-round pick. They may be interested in trading back into the first round due to the 4-year rule. They can offer two second-round picks (29, 31) that we could on-trade for 2020 picks.)
* Gold Coast (They have Brisbane's first-round pick 17. We may be able to use one of GWS's picks to bump them up a few places in the draft in exchange for a 2020 pick.)
* Geelong (They may be interested in securing a late first-round pick because they are required to use at least one this year. They may be able to offer second-round and third-round picks from 2019 and 2020.)
If these clubs did a good deal, we could conceivably swap pick 4 and Jones for pick 5 and an assortment of later picks in next year's draft. One possible very optimistic outcome (our gains in bold):
* 4, Essendon's 31 and 40 to GWS for 11, 13 and GWS's 2020 2nd-round pick
* GWS's 13 to Essendon for 29 and 31
* GWS's pick 11 and 57 to Gold Coast for 17 and Gold Coast's 2020 3rd-round pick
* Jones and Essendon's 29 to St Kilda for 5 and St Kilda's 2020 4th-round pick
* Gold Coast's 17 to Geelong for 36 and Geelong's 2020 2nd-round pick
We gain 5, 36, GWS's 2020 2nd-round pick (~32), Geelong's 2020 2nd-round pick (~34), Gold Coast's 2020 3rd-round pick (~38), St Kilda's 2020 4th-round pick (~58).
GWS gain 4, 31, 40.
Essendon gain 13.
Gold Coast gain 11, 57.
Geelong gain 17.
St Kilda gain Jones and 29.
Essentially, we would be trading Jones for two Academy players next year. We would have picks 5, 23, 36, 50, 58, 76 and could use these to make further trades for picks in the 2020 draft."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

Why on earth would we want Daniher! When Buddy retires in 3 or so years we will have our very own Nick Blakey ready to step up. Wayne Carey keeps on telling us that Nick is going to be a super star (I hope he is right of course) who can play anywhere but will probably play a role similar to Daniher and we already have him. Having two 'stars' eg Buddy and Tippet trying to play together certainly didn't work for us.
Regarding Sam Reid even Horse commented after one game when asked about Reid that when Sam was in the forward line with Buddy out he could have been stepping up and imposing himself on the game more. However after surviving the whole season without injury I imagine that Sam might be set for a great year next year.
Reid is an excellent foil for Buddy, but evidence strongly suggests he can't score heavily against the opposition's best defender.Comment

Serong who I believe was seen in our rooms after a game recently. Was reported on the AFL app that he was terrific and had 29 disposals, 9 clearances and 7 inside 50's in a game for Gippsland Power against the powerful Oakleigh Chargers in QF. Oakleigh won by 8 points.Comment

Why on earth would we give up pick 4. They are a very rare commodity for us and given our recent path of going for youth, surely go for the best we can get to build the youth base. My gut feeling is we will keep pick 4 and draft Serong, a strong inside mid, which is what we need.Comment

i think Part of the issue why everyone is looking at trade options is because pick 4 or maybe it will be pick 5 due to the Suns doesn’t look that great
Serong pick 3 more then likely

If making a fair trade for Jye Caldwell was possible with GwS I would do it in a heartbeat for pick 4"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Again on SEN this arvo they talked about Papley to Carlton. The host said, but he is contracted for 4 years, how can that happen. The bloke spruiking it said that it can be done. "But at his exit interview there was no talk about him moving". "It doesn't mean anything". Again brought up personal issues.
If it is an issue with his girlfriend, then get her up there, get her a job and get on with it.
I haven't heard people like Sam Maclure who are spruiking this talk, say where they are hearing this "personal issues" stuff and what it's related to. I find it astonishing that even though Sam acknowledges Papley has a 4 year contract, is happy at the club who also confirmed he's not up for trade, somehow thinks this is all a ploy just to increase his trade value!!! Put up or Shut up.
I personally think Carlton where targeting Papley thinking he only had 1 year left on his contract and that they might able to lure him with a big contract offer $$$$.Last edited by KSAS; 2 September 2019, 09:03 PM.Comment

Apparently Brad Crouch’s manager has fielded many enquiries about him. I hope we are asking. We desperately need ball winners . Joey is on the wane and Parker needs help . Heeney is not a natural inside Mid and Mills ( still questions mark over his credentials too ) may be stuck down back forever. Hewett is great when let off the chain but it’s not enough. We rarely have one player other than Lloyd who regularly gets over 30 touches ( and a lot of his are played in kick ins) and at our prime we had 4-5 blokes getting those numbers ( JPK, Jack, Hanners, Parker, Mitchell etc . ) you can’t win the game if you don’t win your share of the footy ! Would be happy to offer pick 23 up, maybe even Rose as the steak knives if they’ll have him. Wonder if that would be enough though ...Comment

There seems to be a lot of difference in draft rankings this year making me consider the option of splitting pick 4 with GWS. With the possibility of a slider or two and an even draft, it is possible we could get two of Will Gould, Brodie Kemp, Deven Robertson, Dylan Stephens, and Luke Jackson.Comment

However, I think we should hold off until he becomes free agent and agree we should take pick 4 to draft unless we can snare an elite ball winning mid with it.Comment
