I don't know how much credence to give to this horror "news". If it's for real will seriously test my faith in our list managers. Obviously they know way more than us and they're not stupid but the acid will be on them from me way more than with the Buddy deal (which cost nothing in picks, only oodles of cap space). I'm just trying to get my head around how this could be the ballpark given all the factors we have repeatedly screeched about (RFA next year, injured, out of contract etc etc). Thoughts:

    1. JD may take a modest salary because he wants to come. (Really?) If so, this would make it worth paying more in picks for us (although doesn't entitle Carlton to demand more, particularly if they don't know what we're offering him - and why should they know?)

    2. We may have really solid info on JD's injury/health status that makes us confident. As confident as you can be. Even a perfectly healthy player can get injured at any time.

    3. Maybe Buddy's health status is more parlous than we know and we really need someone to be ready to fill the void in a way that perhaps Reid, McCartin and Blakey can't.

I'm drying up. Unless all of those apply it still doesn't seem enough to justify us paying Papley + pick 9.

A further tragedy is that if the Blues think we need pick 9 they can afford to be a lot less interested and pay less for Papley. *#@%!!!

Perhaps they forgot to mention some part of the deal, like EFC will also hand over Aaron Francis, Darcy Parish and their first three picks from 2020? That's starting to sound like a deal worth proceeding with.

We have already said Pick 5 is off the table, this is just typical Barrett reporting his usual bull@@@@.

Carlton are also dreaming if they think Pick 9 (which will become Pick 10) will net them Papley and something “significant” as extra.

I can understand the Swans wanting to land Daniher (and it would be hard to say no to the idea of a talented and exciting prospect asking to come to your club), but I am really worried about the loss of depth in our midfield. Papley is very good and still has so much potential; his loss will hurt us (along with Jones).

If we have to pay two first round picks to secure Daniher (and there is no point in waiting till next year if we want him - anything can happen between now and then - strike when you can), then I would prefer we give up this and next year's first rounder and keep Papley rather than trading him to secure another pick this year.

The problem for supporters (like me) is that we want our good players to want to stay. We want to be able to cheer them for a decade or more. We get invested in the idea that the club means as much to them as it does to us.

Maybe the trigger clause in Papley's contract is up to him (and that he is only secured for two more years). Perhaps he does want out. Perhaps it is best to secure someone who wants to be here than play hardball with someone who does not.

But who knows? A supporter's world is often situated in an imagined universe.

I will seriously spew if they waste time and money on "another" injury-proned player. That money is better spent on a healthy young gun.
Are we the AFL's official rehab? When did that happen?
Nathan Gibbs isn't our doctor any more. The "miracle" recovery factor at the Club has gone.
Between not enough condition training (what happened to running up and down the sand hills at Kurnell) for the "older players" and the (I believe) under par current doctor... we'd be shooting ourselves in the face to spite our nose.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.
Blessed are the cracked for they are the ones who let in the light.

Our current Doc lost me a bit with his baffling decision to send Sinclair back out after dislocating his shoulder in that Sun's game.

As I said at the time, all the upper limb orthopods I work with all thought it was crazy and couldn't think of any good reason, especially in the context of our season and that particular game, that you would ok this.

IMO I think either both trades happen, or neither happens. I think it will all depend on what Essendon are willing to accept for Daniher.

I wouldn't want to offer anymore than Pick 9 & Pick 25 for Daniher personally.

We can't really afford to give up next years first round pick though - on the basis that we have the two academy kids coming through that we are very likely to want, and there is a fair chance that at least one of them will go in the first round.

Completely agree here. There is an agenda going on with the Melbourne media to ruin the deal and put sour tastes in everyones mouths to potentially, keep JD in Essendon. Could be far-fetched, but until 7/10, noone has any idea.

Had to switch off the drivel Maclure & Del Santo were spouting this morning when discussing Daniher's & Papley's respective trade worth. Hope the club wasn't listening! Maclure still thinks Papley will get to Carlton.

Ever notice how on Trade Radio/Melbourne Media all the trades speculated are big WINS for Coll, Ess, Rich, Carl etc? Curious....

Lloyd is doing his best to deter any Daniher deal and Maclure pumping up Papley deal. Pure self interest. Rife amongst Melbourne footy media. Have some time for Robbo but they reckon he wrote about the Bombers drug crisis wearing an Essendon footy jumper with number 5 on the back.
