Not sure that follows. I hope his reasons for wanting a move are more than just frustration with injury. Of course, if he does play the majority of next year with the Bombers and they enjoy some success, there's a chance he could change his mind. If so, so be it. But there has to be something attractive to him about moving to Sydney (the city and the club).
There is also the possibility he was discussing with Harley coming to the Swans as a FA next year and events have forced everyone’s hand in a way they wish they hadn’t. The Buddy deal took more than a year to arrange. If that is true I’d love to see the Swans call Essendon’s bluff, but think it’s unlikely.Comment

Anyway, there wouldn't have been an announcement that Daniher wants to come to Sydney without prior discussions about what the deal might be. So I'm expecting Daniher to be a Swan next year. I don't agree with it, but can only hope he's fit and good fortune comes out of this.
I was really pleased when we landed Buddy. And Joe is a very talented player. But, there are just too many buts in this deal.Comment

I'm hoping the JD deal doesn't get done & EFC hold him to his contract. Not comfortable with all this multi picks talk to EFC when JD will be FA in 12 months. Crazy. I'm also hoping we hold Papley to his 4 year contract. The most I would offer for JD right now is our 2nd round pick 25. EFC can take it or leave it as we're in position of power with him coming into FA. I want us to keep pick 5 for to get Serong (also a Swans supporter) as we are in desperate need of quality midfielders and NOT KPF.Comment

Another concern is what we will be offering him money wise . Surely they aren’t going to be giving him 900k , which is what he is supposedly on now

You’d hope a heavily incentivised contract rather than a Hanners-At-Saints $800k for 2 games scenario.Comment

If we wait till next year, there are so many possible scenarios - some good; some bad. For example, as a free agent other teams will make big offers for him knowing they don't have to give up draft picks. Essendon could patch things up with him.
Recruiting a player is always a calculated gamble. Some pay off and others don't. The teams that are most consistently successful seem to have more wins than the rest. But even they don't get it right all of the time. I see this as potentially the biggest recruiting risk of a big name player we have taken since Barry Hall. He came with a lot of baggage but delivered in spades for most of his time with us. Tippett, Lockett and Buddy were less risky but as we know Tippett was cruelled by injury. The other two were awesome recruits.
My feelings on this are mixed. I love the excitement of a top liner coming to our Club. I worry about what we may have to give up to get him. Papley is now almost certainly gone.

Pick 5 plus next years first rounder
Keep Paps if possible (or at least don’t trade until Joe deal done)
Saints 2020 2nd rounder to get us points for academy boys
McCartin plays CHB key defender issue solved ??
Daniher plays part time ruck and deep forward
Buddy plays high half forward, we are no longer Buddy centric up forward ??
No 2nd ruck required ??
2 young academy mids coming 2020 ??
Still have pick 25 ??
Still have enough points for academy boys in 2020 ??

The killer for the defence of most teams will be marking up for periods of the game vs two serious game destroyers upfront
Two battle ships up front who just happen to like different sides of the arc for their set shots makes a zone defence tricky and even harder for the loose defender to choose which side he will zone
Add in the other emerging long kick in Dawson exiting from our HBF who can genuinely find Bud or Daniher in the lead
It’s hot in the city if they are on the footy pitch at the same time"be tough, only when it gets tough"
