You're right about McGovern and Barry but it's not uncommon for key backs to mark the ball if that's the right option. His 'sticky fingers' would still come in handy. Plus he makes good decisions. At times we could swing him forward or even start him there depending on available personnel. No way he should ever be traded. Reid would go before him. McCartin is a huge part of our future. It would Terry Daniher all over again if we let him go.

Who said we should trade him ? He could probably find a home easily in our defence but with his rare ability to clunk it in a contest , and it is special , he is better suited up front then down back , in my opinion . He can take a proper pack mark . There’s not too many in the comp that can do that. I understand that is a valuable skill as a defender but in defence you don’t get the luxury of being able to go for your marks every timeYou're right about McGovern and Barry but it's not uncommon for key backs to mark the ball if that's the right option. There is nothing new under the sun the last decade or two with a lot of key positions talls required to play both ends of the grounds effectively
It is becoming even more and more critical for match ups and the teams that don’t have flexible talls that can adapt to a forward or defensive tall role struggle.
Ps I thought McGovern overall is fairly elite. Season before was amazing !Last edited by Auntie.Gerald; 6 October 2019, 01:45 PM."be tough, only when it gets tough"

If we're getting a second-round pick from Essendon, it will more likely be their 2020 pick. We need more draft points next year. That would be the ideal scenario however more realistically I would think it would be this year's first rounder, not next year's due to needing plenty to draft likely 2 first rounders next year in Gulden and Campbell.
Pick 9 and 25 would be an excellent result if we could get Joe but I have my doubts that the notoriously difficult traders Essendon will except that.
Maybe it could end up trading 5 and 9 for Joe and their pick 31? I wouldn't be completely disappointed with that is we at least have two 2nd round picks to use, and possibly 3 if Jones goes for a 2nd rounder."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

McCartin has shown signs of being a decent intercept marker and one-on-one defender. He'll get better at both with more size and experience.
While he's an excellent contested mark in the forward 50, he's not a powerful kick for goal nor that good at ground level. He'll improve there, but I'm not convinced he'll be sufficiently prolific to be an elite forward.Comment

Pick 9 and a swap of our 2020 first with Bombers 2020 second. That assumes we let Papley go for Carlton's pick 9.
Gives Dododoro his two firsts, same deal they did to land Shiel, current and future first and a future second coming back. We'll then be death riding Essendon all through 2020!
Would not let pick 5 go, need a good mid now or a good HBF like Young to release Mills into the centre.Comment

Good one, although Dodoro will be determined to get pick 5 and something else, so he can say they won the trade and they were the only circumstances in which they'd let Daniher go.Pick 9 and a swap of our 2020 first with Bombers 2020 second. That assumes we let Papley go for Carlton's pick 9.

Bombers are determined to extract the maximum for Joey. Have even floated a suitable player, with trade (s) will be required.
They need an inside mid. We have JPK, Parker, Hewett, Rowbottom and Ollie played a bit inside last year as well. I'd imagine Parker would be high on their list but I suspect a supporters' revolt if that happened.
It's not like we are flushed with ball winners so I'd hope none are traded out. But crazy stuff can happen so who knows?Comment

I like the McCartin debate. The beauty is that he has skills that could allow him to flourish at both ends. I personally feel that he will end up being an AA defender. The McGovern comparisons are okay but I actually think McCartin will be more like Harry Taylor. Someone who can take a strong one on one grab in defence but swing forward now and then to kick a goal.
Anyway, given that this is the draft and trade thread, it will probably be the last I say about McCartin here as I think he’ll be a swan for life (and future captain).Comment

Thanks for that Aprilbr. If true, it shows Essendon has some level of confidence that Daniher will get over his OP issues. Seems certain we'll make a concerted effort to get him now rather than risk waiting 12 mths when he becomes a FA. Dunno how we'll work out trade if we want keep both our pick 5 & Papley, as it appears we may not assuming Daniher will command a first round pick. I'm now hoping we don't lose both Papley/Jones & retain one of them. I can't see us using our early 2020 picks as we'll need to bank points to secure Gulden & Campbell next year. Article suggests a possible 3 way deal with another club. If say we get Richmond's 1st round pick (19) for jones and bundle that with our pick 25 will that be suffice? I know that might be wishful thinking, but with Richmond being in a flag window Jones might their best short term option to replace Ellis rather than drafting/developing an unknown with that pick.In answer to the comment above that Bombers did not offer Daniher an extension, according to an article today in The Age by Jake Niall who is an excellent football reporter, the Bombers tried to negotiate a contract extension with him in recent months but he was evasive with them at the time. This is when they began to suspect that he may wish to leave. See attached.
PS There are 3 pages of The Age dedicated to the Daniher news today. It really is a big story in Melbourne.

Papley can then be a seperate deal away from the Daniher trade, if the club thinks it's best long term to release him now (I'd rather not). With him being on a 4 year contract we can screw down Carlton or whoever for their 1st round and swap of our 2020 3rd round with their 2nd round. Otherwise no deal as we deserve overs for Paps in this case.Comment

Sam McClure has just tweeted that the Saints have got another one with Zac Jones officially nominating them as his destination of choice...

Well that annoys me, Saints would have the absolute poorest draft hand to get players. At best it'll be their 2020 second. Let's wait and see if Essendon are interested in Jones, would be better to send him and a first for Daniher than take the Saints 2020 second which, with FA compo's and a raft of NGA's next year, could end up late 30s.Comment

I think Swans are going to have to play hardball on Jones as we need a decent pick to use in the Daniher deal.
Wonder if the Dons would also entertain (1) Cameron (2) Grassy as part of the trade, given their interest in him earlier in the year. A cynic would say we drafted Knoll just to stop the Bombers getting him. And then didn’t play him. Now would be the time to give him up.
If they want an inside player, why not Jones?Comment

The Brandon Ellis FA compo pick screwed us as I think had it been at the end of the first round the Tigers could well have used it for Jones and Saints will offer less.
If we got pick 20 for Jones it would be a huge help in the Daniher deal.
Richmond are appealing though.Comment

When will the deal happen? I get the impression Swans like to get deals done quickly and Bombers like to play chicken. I really hope we don’t blink first.Comment
