This is a news article, not an opinion piece. Andrew Wu makes no comment whatsoever about whether or not Longmire will stay at the Swans, he simply reports that the 'Swans' - no mention of who he spoke with - remain confident that they will re-sign him.

What was more interesting for me was the media clip that went with it of Heeney being asked questions about the situation.

Why should he? Maybe he is giving serious consideration to it. Maybe he doesn't feel as secure in his current position as Simpson, or as content with what he's already achieved as Clarkson. Maybe he feels that, after 18 years at the Swans he needs a change, and that the North job provides him with the opportunity for a fresh challenge.

Or maybe he hasn't actually received a firm offer yet from North. Or a firm offer of a new contract from the Swans, so doesn't yet have the information he needs to make a decision.

Or maybe he is strongly tempted by a move to North but is keeping an eye on what Shaw is doing there, with the 2002 memories of Roos and Wallace firmly at the front of his mind.

Or maybe he's close to finalising a new contract with the Swans but is firmly aware of the Swans' mantra of not discussing contracts in the media.

There are any number of ways the situation could play out. He might leave or he might stay. If he leaves I'll be disappointed but the sun will still come up the next day. A new coach will be found. One thing I'm absolutely sure of is that it will do the Swans (or the Roos) absolutely no good for him to come out now and say publicly that he will be coaching North next season.

Spot on. I'd hope the club's planning includes all these possible eventualities.

At least he is a local Sydney journalist who liaises with the Swans on a daily basis. Heeney seemed very relaxed.

You are correct. I should have said "Andrew Wu reports that the Swans think Longmire is staying"
Of more interest to me, given some of the comments on here e.g. the one above by SS Bleeder, was that Horse's contract situation is quite different to theirs.

I wonder how long a coach should stay at a club? It is never indefinitely. How it happens is an indication of the coach and the club. The Club is in the drivers seat and maybe they are seeing how the future will look without Horse and what options are out there.

My gut feeling is that he will go. In saying that he loves the team and the Club loves him but just the time has come.

Southsideswan is right. The club is in the drivers seat. There are a lot more available potential coaches than there are clubs
that they can go to. I think with these longer term "relationships", it's not all just about money and success, there has to be a bit
of "love" there too. And I'm sure that waxes and wanes a bit over the journey. There will be all sorts of personal circumstances that
will come into play for Longmire too, as there would be for anyone pushing 50 and considering their career options. He mightn't
want to be a coach for another five years, so a two or three year extension with the Swans might suit him just fine, even if it
means he won't end up with as much money as the mooted North offer. I guess we'll see.

Liam Pickering, as well as Longmire, says that North have not made a formal offer, which I believe must be true. If Longmire, even informally, accepts an offer to coach another club during the season he would have to step down immediately. Everyone knows that this could not remain a secret long and his reputation would be ruined if it became public that he coached the Swans knowing he would be coaching another club in 2020. So an acceptance statement can never be made during the season, only an outright rejection.

I suppose if we don't hear about a contract extension by early August, then we should start wondering if he might go elsewhere.

My Old man, uncle and a few friends attended the swans legends lunch in Melbourne yesterday for Reg . I caught up with them after work for a pint . Other than it being a great day as it usually is , they remarked that they all thought Horse was gone. Apparently Andrew Pridham was there and his response to questions regarding Horse ( the company line of “ we don’t comment on contracts “ ) was entirely less than convincing and his body language would suggest Horse is on the way to North. Just their opinion / feeling of course . Did any else go and get the chance to ask Pridham about Horse ?

Why should he? Because leaving a cloud over the clubs coaching future is unprofessional.

I have to agree with that , it’s not great when it’s a player doing it but when it’s the senior coach it’s not a great look .

That is interesting considering recent media reports that the Swans were conifdent Longmire would sign a contract extension in the coming month. Why couldn't Pridham have said that instead of the "we don't comment on contracts" line? Pridham himself was recently quoted saying "you can admire a nice yacht in the marina all you want but it doesn't you'll get it", which reflected his initial confidence of Longmire staying. Has that confidence now changed?
