My initial thoughts as well, overrated.

Happy to concede he’s never had a really solid crack at it though through injuries etc. Averaged under 9 games per season in the four years he was active. These big forwards can play 100 games before they start putting it altogether.

Even when he was drafted I didn't understand the noise around him. Wasn't overly big or dominate, but has good hands. Looks like an oversize midfielder, if he was fit. Certainly can't see why you would pick him over Petracca.

Regarding if he's OK to play, you've got to trust the panel of experts in concussion who have extensively examined him. Any club interested will do their due diligence. If he is picked up by the Swans, so be it.
The eternal connundrum "what happens when an unstoppable force meets an immovable object" was finally solved when David Hasselhoff punched himself in the face.

I'm aware of brain shaking being the main factor in concussion, but some energy has to be absorbed by the helmet. It's basic physics. But it's clearly not nearly enough to prevent concussion.

If his doctors say he's okay to play, then I don't believe we have any additional duty of care. The problem with Paddy is that he was involved in too many incidents. I don't know if he can train to lower the incident level.

I agree with Nico that he was overrated, but nonetheless, he's worth a FA signing on a short term deal. Daniher and Cameron are just too expensive, especially with Buddy still on board.

We can pick up a cheap ruckman, go to the draft with pick 3 and hope that McDonald or Thilthorpe is still there. Effectively, we would put off the hard decisions on these long term positional weaknesses until next year, when we'll have the benefit of another year to see how McLean, Amartey and Naismith go.

Working with forwards coach, L Franklin, should help.

            Heya Aaaron and AB

Given that Sam Reid is a key forward that is in the last year of his contract and turning 30 next season i think the debate is alive and not to be 100% dismissed.

Is it possible the Swans maybe of the mindset that a 1 goal a game key Forward isnt going to cut it anymore....nor should it for a high paid key forward?

Sam nailed 5 goals between the big sticks this season.

Are you alluding to that if a team outside of Sydney offered Sam a longer contract and for more money....... that you know for certain he would stay at the Swans and knock back the offer?

Just like knowing buddy was joining the Swans which i certainly didnt see coming even if it was in front of my face?

Its unlikely Sam would leave because he doesnt have to.......... but if the circumstances above came to light and the Swans could not match the offers of a Melb, Carlton, Saints etc then they maybe smart to trade a 2021....30yr old forward.........IF......there was an option for a Jeremy Cameron or similar at the right price averaging 2.5 goals a game.

In American Football, the helmets actually make things worse as players are inclined to go in harder and use the helmets as weapons in a way that no one would do without one.
On the McCartin health issue, I find it hard to believe that he is of no increased risk of further concussions or CTE. That said, it is his life and if footy is all he wants to do then so be it. He can only be warned so many times.
On the McCartin ability issue...he's a good player. I think he came a little unstuck when he started at AFL level as the U18 competition used a rule that ensured two forwards and defenders in the 50 at all times. He beat his man one-on-one but then struggled to replicate that at AFL level where that rule obviously doesn't exist which allows defences to be structured much better. He has good hands and is a decent kick. For a free, he is definitely worth a shot.

For any trade to happen involving a contracted player, three conditions must be met:

                1. The player wants to be traded.
                2. Another club wants to give up draft picks and a contract to trade in the player.
                3. The club is happy with the compensation received for the trade.

For these reasons, I think the Sam Reid trade is too far fetched even for a hypothetical. If we look at these conditions:

                1. As outlined by Aaron, Sam has always shown a desire to remain in Sydney.
                2. If, as you pointed out, Sam has been so poor for the team that finished 16th, why would another team chase such as 29 year old? “Sam nailed 5 goals between the big sticks this season”
                3. Who knows? Possibly if we receive something crazy.

Sam Reid will be a UFA next year. I don't see an incentive for him to leave at this time, nor for clubs clambering over themselves for his services this year. He has a poor injury history and there are several better forwards on the market. If the Swans fail to offer him a deal he likes next year, he might go shopping himself around

I can’t really think of a club which would be into him. Essendon? We’d be lucky to get a third rounder for him.

                      Swap with North ?

                      Ben Brown | AFL

AB it does seem like if teh club wants you to go.........that can change circumstances.........North made the call for Ben ..........for change to happen in alignment with success sometimes tough decisions need to be made

Would North Fans have seen this coming in 2019 or even half way thru this year?

                      I didnt

North are now takers you would guess re Brown........so maybe that could be a good trade if both players keen for a fresh start?

I just cant except 0.5 goals per game from a key forward......id like to see more in our forward line for a $550k ish pa player

Maybe we will let Melican go (I hope not) and use Reid and McCartin down back. Both have proved capable of taking strong defensive marks. That would leave room for an incoming forward to work with Buddy et al?

A possible trade that I saw mooted was Ben Brown to Essendon, as a replacement for Daniher who would end up at Brisbane.

Paddy McCartin has diabetes: here is the link to an interview with him http://beyondtype1.org/paddy-mccartin-interview/

It has definitely had an impact on his AFL career.

Footy Wire has his last stats as Playing Height: 194cm Playing Weight: 100kg Position: Forward

Where as before he was drafted he was 193cm and 95kg.

He has played mostly as a defender in his junior career, but must have been good as he was a bottom-aged player for the Geelong Falcons.

St Kilda needed a forward line, so I believe they played him out of position.

Look, I say roll the dice: He has talent, and more that some pick at 50 or 60 that we might choose.

If he doesn't make it, at least we and the McCartin boys will know we tried!
