With Knoll’s delisting it brings a quick end to our selections in the 2019 mid season draft. Knoll and Cody Hirst for a total of 0 senior games. Knoll made the emergencies list once, the very first week after he was drafted.

I was very underwhelmed when i saw him play in the NEAFL last year. Looked lumbering and not particularly adept at tap work. I wonder what the recruiters or coaches saw in him. He was in the SANFL rep team in 2019 before we selected him so there must have been something going for him but I never saw what.

Well I’m sure you have your sources, but according to Plugger’s own autobiography
      1) he wanted to go to Collingwood but the C’wood directors couldn’t agree on him playing for them
      2) Richmond was next but couldn’t work out a trade with the Saints
      3) we had the first pick in the draft and could get him for free, but were willing to trade with the Saints to their satisfaction (along with Hawthorn in a 3 way trade)
      4) he changes his mind several times before signing (for many reasons) but the tenacity of Ron Barassi & Ron Joseph, and reassurances from former team mate Jayson Daniels about the Swans convinced him
      5) the anonymity of Sydney appealed
      6) his wife was supportive

The 2 Ronnies seem to have been the biggest influence in persuading him. Not the AFL.

There are lots of concussions in football, so it would be prohibitive to the game continuing if it were known that every concussion causes this positive feedback tau tangling effect.

I agree that this should be a major consideration in recruiting Paddy McCartin.
I will, but it may take a couple of days, to try and get it clear in my own head, why some people are more at risk than others. There are genetic components, but I really aren't sure what they are? Since Paddy has suffered more than most other footballers, the odds would be that he's not in the lower risk cohort of the population?

If you're reading the thread, goswannies, you might be able to assist?

I was just saying in my reply to Ludwig, that you might be able to help answer his question about concussion?

I remember reading at the time that Essendon were also interested in Knoll and they were annoyed that we selected him. We were both desperate for a ruckman at that time.

            Simple answer. Yes.

The reality is that concussions do and will always occur in football (and many other sports).

Repeated concussion increase the risk of subsequent concussions.

Repeated concussions have significant deleterious and adverse health effects, many long-term and not predictable. But it is unlikely that this will be prohibitive to the continuation of AFL

Smoking causes cancer. Doesn’t stop cigarettes being sold.

Boxing and MMA fighting likely have higher concussion rates. Doesn’t stop those sports.

Driving cars and guns can cause death. But they’re not banned.

The AFL game can and will evolve to mitigate the risks of concussion, through rule changes to minimise the risks and management strategies to minimise the impact. This is to protect the players and reduce the future litigation risks to the sport.

As for the actual mechanics of concussion déjà was pretty comprehensive. And there is still a significant element of the unknown that is being investigated.

I had the pleasure of attending a 2 hour education seminar about concussion last week. Enlightening, but the best way to stop concussion in football is probably not to play it. The next best solution is to manage the injury properly (which at amateur level is both harder - as the weekend warrior sports people can be less sensible about it - and easier - as their livelihoods don’t depend on it).

If we did that, we would become like Fremantle. Many players ended up at Fremantle after being shuffled off lists from other clubs, and it hasn't earned Fremantle many premierships.

Living in Melbourne I can say that there are still many supporters of clubs based down here that still think that the Swans receive extra help from the AFL and their success is mainly due to this support.
The Melbourne clubs have got a lot more help from the Swans than they Swans have got from them. If it wasn't for the VFL making the Swans paying a $4 million licence fee (twice) in the late 1980s despite being a foundation club, several of the Melbourne clubs would have folded: Richmond, Fitzroy, Footscray, St Kilda and North Melbourne among them.

Since the 2012 premiership we have gone for quantity over quality in the ruck department. I don't know what's going through their heads. I'm always stunned when Longmire says you can never have enough ruckmen. Probably his 2nd favourite sentence after ones that include the word consistency. One day he'll have an epiphany and say One consistent ruckman is all you need. Hopefully climate change won't destroy the world before that day arrives.

RWO has its own illusive forum called The Sandpit. Find it if you can. (I hope I don't get sanctioned by the mods for disclosing classified information).

with the names being thrown around as potentially available even though they are under contract, i can really see us dangling that pick 3 around

Shal Bolton and Daniel Rioli at the Swans ? Picks 29 and 15 in the Drafts

When I watched these two guys last night in amongst a very strong Richmond team I could not help but think of the serious absence of their creativity at the Swans.

They turn nothing into something so often, which takes so much pressure off their team mates........it allows their team members to break hard and get away from tough contests because they know that they win their one on ones so often. The Tigers know that Bolton, Rioli, Martin etc can hold up their one on one and that allows the Tigers to flood forward in numbers without the fear of a quick counter attack.

Richmond have some players that you seriously dont want to be one on one with on game day.......Rioli and Bolton leave you eating dust and set up the next play...........do we ?

We tried to opt for this style of player who has so much time with the ball ie ET and that has back fired.........can we trade in a player of such dexterity and time with the ball so we as a team can also flood forward and attack like Richmond?

Brisbane also identified this importance in their team mix via Cameron who also tips a game in an instant and allows a team to get seriously mobile real quick.
