2020 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel

Salary cap isn't the one constraint affecting list management. List spots and senior opportunities (ie a balance between who takes for granted/expects/hopes/needs development across the list) are also factors.

Malceski was not only offered a longer playing contract and more money, but also a promised pathway to the Suns' coaching team. He never really hit his playing straps for the Suns, with his knees causing him ongoing issues, and retired early. He wasn't pushed out of the club in the sense he wasn't offered any contract but chose a better offer. Pretty hard to see how any criticism could be aimed at the club - either at the time or with hindsight - for letting him go with their blessing.

Yep in days gone by we may have collected Tuohoy, ban or no, it's hard to comprehend how that would have been possible when salary cap saw us shedding both Nanny and Mitchell at that time.

Same again, that's the year we had to shed Mal and Membrey just to say within the cap, so how the f.... could we add Patfull to the team?
The whole suggestion that the trade ban trashed the Swans talent acquisition plans is a disingenuous and threadbare fig leaf used to obfuscate the collateral trading damage bought about by the Buddy/Kurt gamble.

No I don't recall this being the case. Nankervis and Membrey left for more opportunities. Malceski wanted a longer contract than what we were offering.

Yes Mitchell was affected by the salary cap because he wanted more money than we could offer. (And the trading of Hanners and Rohan was for salary cap relief).

That’s not how I remember it. Membrey was allowed to leave for more opportunity at the Saints and was hardly chewing up much of our cap. Mal was coming to the end of his career and was made a multi year offer the Swans opted not to match. I don’t think either was a salary cap related issue?

And with Knoll the same age, injured and yet to play a game. And most people now recognising that Sinkers isn't a solution to our ruck problems.
So I think we are really going to need a ready to play ruckman, not sure we can afford to draft and wait and I suspect we may not be able to afford a starting 22 ruckman from another club.

So taking a deep breath, I'm suggesting . . . . Nanny(*).

I think it would be worth experimenting with an athletic Aliir / Amartey type and seeing if we can make it work, rather than playing Sinkers by default. It worked for the Doggies last night.

Pittonet would have been a good pick up in last years trade period, I wondered why we didn’t look into him. Too much faith in Naismith returning and staying fit ( poor judgement considering his record ). He’s playing good footy for the blues apparently.( haven’t seen any of their games just from what I’ve read / heard ).

Anyway I think we should pursue that kind of trade in this period, find the next Mummy
