Too much blind faith. We draft some kids the club tells us are highly talented, and some young Swans play some good games here and there, and suddenly that's enough to convince us that our next great team is already on the list.
If that group of Aliir, Hewett, Heeney, Mills, Dawson, Papley, Florent, Hayward, Ling, McCartin, Blakey, Rowbottom, McInerney, Stephens, Gould and Taylor are the ones taking us forward, then we are in for a very rough decade.
With the exception of Heeney and Papley, there is not one top-line star in that group.
You are very quick to throw some of them under the bus- Gould hasn't even played yet in the seniors, Stephens a couple of games, Taylor a couple of games. Several others are still in the absolute initial stages of their career.
Are you so dismissive about every footballer? Did you give up on Goodesy because he wasn't dominating in his first season? Or Jude Bolton who couldn't get above 15 touches on average until his 5th season of regularly playing seniors? There's a multitude of players that were at the exact stage many of those names are at in their careers.
You are likely to be right about some of those players, no doubt. Some will perform below expectations and not make it. But others will outperform - and there is a reasonable core of players there.
I'd be happy to lay a rather hefty wager on your being dead wrong about Rowbottom for instance, he absolutely has all the hallmarks of becoming an elite midfielder. And I find the obsession with blasting Blakey on here from some truly curious - he needs patience and time to develop and build a body for AFL footy. And if you can't see the massive steps that Florent has taken in the last 12 months, then you aren't watching footy very closely."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

Maybe you need to find another hobby TB? I'm a negative nelly at times, but that just reads like throwing the baby out with the bathwater.

Yeah well said . I’m not giving up on Blakey by any stretch, he’s going to be a star. I do feel dropping him may help him get his mojo back though. Playing against some less experienced and less talented players, regain the confidence and belief in his ability. That miss yesterday reeked of a guy devoid of confidence.

My memory says Micky O didn't do much early, Adam Goodes was almost a delist after his first year in the ressies, O'Keefe similar. Some kids come in and look right up there but never go on (see list of Rising Star winners), other quietly build before cementing themselves as top liners.
We're developing a promising core of young players and with Pick 2, Campbell and Gulden to add this year it's looking good, give them time, enjoy the small gains.Last edited by 707; 2 August 2020, 10:03 PM.Comment

These two observations from the same Roar article:
Six talking points from AFL Round 9
If you’re an AFL side looking to snatch up a quality ruckman at the end of the year I reckon there’s one to be lured away from Richmond’s list. Toby Nankervis, Ivan Soldo and Mabior Chol are all clearly capable at the level but can’t play in the same side.
There’s a lot to like about the youth on Sydney’s list, but here’s a question I still don’t know the answer to – who’s their next A-grade midfielder? Well stocked with quality kids in most areas of the ground, but that one remains something of a mystery.Comment

Surely we go after one of Richmond's rucks at the end of the year. Wouldn't mind having Toby back.
Thoughts on Matt Crouch? Surprised to see he's only 25. From memory he's more of a JPK or Hewett style midfielder, so may not be in the mould of midfielder we're after.Last edited by longmile; 3 August 2020, 10:14 AM.Comment

Definitely worth considering. Blakey was really good further up the ground last year. Mills is starting to be used more and more there. Heeney and Parker could share Martin role so cupboard not as bare as we might think. Centre bounce and clearances kill us at the moment without Naismith.Comment
