Nice. BJ can really write, can't he?

Stoddard looked to me to have gone backwards in 2020 after a sprightly debut in 2019. Ling's composure and willingness to take the game on when he had the chance edged Ryley out.

I'm more disappointed by Maibaum not ever having a chance, but again, Melican's rapid return to form after a couple of tentative games, along with the arrival of Gould and even Brand as big-bodied defenders squeezed him out.

But as other posters have mentioned, there will have to be more delistings, pending trades (Ronke, anyone?), the AFL's decision on list size, and the slow turning of the Western Australian judicial wheel.

Really great piece. But whoever creates the headlines at AFL.com (I hesitate to call them a subbie) needs to think hard about their career choice.
          https://www.afl.com.au/news/518199/w...-axed-by-swans is a lazy stretch!

I think a player like Ronke would not be delisted now as the Swans want to first see if he has any trade value. If other clubs show no interest in him then he is a chance to be delisted. I also think Ling is still a chance to be delisted pending talks with other clubs. I am pleased to see that Bell has survived. I like his aggressive attitude.

              What the.
Wild speculation, unsubstantiated rumours, silly jokes and opposition delight in another's failures is what makes an internet forum fun.

Great post. I could not agree more. Northern Clubs need to band together when it comes to issues of common interest such as cost of living allowances and the problem of the "go home" factor. Living in Melbourne I can say that there are still many supporters of clubs based down here that still think that the Swans receive extra help from the AFL and their success is mainly due to this support.

Well, I have a long memory. I might not have been there personally but my club was “manufactured“ In 1874. And I take umbrage that you would imply that it was manufactured in the way the the 2 expansion clubs were. My club was relocated north to save itself. The expansion clubs were born in their locations with plenty of bonuses from the AFL.

My club had loans to the AFL and few draft concessions from the league.

And I was there in 1996 and I didn’t ever get the impression people felt we were gifted a grand final appearance. The majority of people were pro-Sydney that day. Astute trading and lucky timing got us the high profile players. Lockett - astute trading to tear him away from the lure of Collingwood and Richmond (helped by their salary cap being full and ours being devoid of paying high end talent). The demise of Fitzroy got us Roos - can’t say that the AFL forced a merger to get us Roos. Kickett - Sheedy dumping him helped him come to us. Craig O’Brien? Hardly a top talent and a journeyman at best. Cressa, Dunks, Dyson all rejected by other clubs. Luff, Stafford, Kelly, McPherson all home grown. Not even comparable to giving a team a bunch of first round picks before others can touch them.

So please don’t lump our long and proud heritage with those others.

                  I’ll tolerate Brisbane

Maybe they hope he can be traded to a Western Australian club for something (unlikely)? I agree that we cannot keep him. He goes against all we stand for and he would be a bad influence if allowed to stay.

He can’t be delisted. He’s got a contract and it is merely supposition that it would contain clauses allowing his dismissal. (Who would adjudicate that Clause) I doubt the ALFPA would allow such clauses as they would provide clubs with a mechanism to break costly deals that had gone sour. Sydney can refuse to play him or to stand him down, but I suspect the AFL is the only party who can deregister him. Even then, whether that allows another player to replace his salary or his position on the list is a separate question.

I suspect the club will take a shot at rehabilitating him if the playing group are willing to give him another chance.

ET has a sentencing hearing in WA on December 2. He also has a contract for 2021. I have no idea if there is any clause in his contract that will allow the Swans to simply delist him without paying out his contract in full which would severely impact the Swans for 2021. From his point of view he will be duly given an appropriate sentence for his assault charge and any further penalty from the Swans would amount to double jeopardy. He has severely disappointed the Swans not only for the pre planned busting of quarantine stint but also as I remember by not following repeated directives prior to that. Difficult to see him at the Swans next year but also it seems termination of his contract is proving problematic.

The Draft is on December 7 so I would expect the ET situation to be resolved by that date.

I don't think ET can be delisted, but rather can be terminated, assuming he breached his contract. We may wait until the end of the contract year, which ends this month. I think this will happen, but it's a legal matter, so not clear if he actually did breach his contract. I've just assumed he had, without actually ever seeing an AFL player contract.

I was a bit surprised about the Stoddart delisting. He played 2 games in each of his 3 years. I thought his last game was his best, but was unfortunate to suffer a season ending back injury afterwards, which likely contributed to his delisting. We also do have an excess of halfback flanker types, and still have plenty of depth in that area. In fact, Reynolds and Rowles would fall into this category as well. I know a lot of RWOers had a negative impression of him, but I always liked his game and thought he was a solid chance of being a long-term AFL player.

Clarke and Thurlow having good years and holding spots in the side through the end of the season, put additional pressure on developing players who have seen little AFL action to stay on our list.

The delisting of Knoll and retention, so far, of both McLean and Amartey may hint of our recruiting intentions. We probably will recruit a ruckman, and might not go hard for a top line forward. It could also be a bit of another kicking the can down the road year, not finding a KPP on the market at a price we are willing to pay. It's also a positive for a Paddy McCartin signing.

These initial cuts favour a trade and draft period of 3 draftees, Paddy McCartin, a ruckman (one of Hayes, Wright, CCJ or Chol) and a list reduction of 1 with an ET termination, and Ronke on the trade table. McLean and Amartey are not safe just yet.

That is not my recollection at all. Our '96 GF appearance was widely celebrated, and we have never been regarded as a manufactured team, except perhaps for that ridiculous Edelsten period.

This is not about "northern" clubs vs the rest. It is simply about fairness. Unfair advantages being offered to the Suns and GWS only disadvantages the Swans because the backlash against it lumps us together with them and we get penalised.

Double jeopardy refers to being tried twice for the same crime, not losing your job in addition to a felony conviction sentence.

ET will go, has to go, but there is no rush for the Swans to do this until they have their legal side in place.

If there is a relevant clause in his contract than it will be easy. If not, they will probably have to terminate it and pay him out.
