Cox would be a good addition to the squad, if we can get him as a part of the Collingwood fire sale. There is a good chance they'll be paying multiple players to not play for them next year.
The earlier assessment is right about our lack of ability to be active in the trade period. We have no assets to trade out, no major free agents to sign, and need to hold picks for academy kids.
Expect the overview of our trade and draft to be:
- hold on to all key players like Aliir, Papley
- sign Paddy McCartin as a free agent (if that's possible, or on the pre season draft)
- recruit a gun midfielder with Pick 3, and 2 quality home grown products
- some clever pick swapping and a Ronke trade to get enough points to ensure limited deficit in 2021
- potential for a swap of 2021 first round pick to 2020 first round of deficit looks significantComment

The rules regarding the playing lists are very unclear at the moment, because the AFL has not yet announced a decision on list sizes. So I suspect there will be further list changes after the announcement. The AFL should hurry up with an announcement because free agency trading has already begun."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

Not sure about (1) Paddy McCartin, purely from a health perspective (2) who we go for with pick 3 (3) the points solution, although 2021 picks have more currency than 2020 ones, so I don't think we'll find it too hard to find a club to swap with, particularly if its someone like Gold Coast that may only use 1 or 2 2020 picks.Comment

I was cheering for Geelong given my Tigers antipathy, but Geelong remaining an 'almost side' is a good result.Comment

Auntie, I've given you at least two warnings on this - do not ever mention the McDonald spuds on this forum again. Oscar has the highest clanger rate in the league!Comment

- I thought we needed a ruckman? In fact, that's the biggest weakness in our list. I commented a few days ago that Cox is not the kind of forward we need, and should play as a #1 ruckman, not a backup like he does a Collingwood. He's a real danger drifting forward, as he's a very accurate kick for goal. I think he could be one of the better ruckmen in the league. He'll be 30 next year, so can give a few good years of service at a high level, allowing us time to develop a young ruckman (who usually come cheap in the draft).
- Another good pickup for GC getting Atkins. He's worth a 2nd round pick and they got him for only a 2 Million dollar contract. But then, they have infinitely large pockets, so it seems. They're building quite a list up there in QLD. I can see the 2 QLD teams finishing in the top 2 spots in a few years.
- The Swans have too much depth, especially in the midfield and defence. I think we will have to trade an established player or two to open a bit of space for player development. The players I come up with as prime candidates are too painful to disclose, because they are some of my favourites. Hurts too much to put down their names.

I tend to agree with you with regards to letting someone go. Not sure who though. For draft points I wouldn't be surprised if we traded our future 2nd rounder for a 2nd rounder this year.Comment

From Bloodspirit post #3097. Here is a helpful list of our players still out of contract: Joel Amartey , Zac Foot, Robbie Fox, Matthew Ling, Hayden McLean, Lewis Melican, Ben Ronke, Jackson Thurlow and Sam Wicks.
Amartey, McLean and Wicks are all rookies so delisting any of those does nothing in reducing our list. That just leaves Foot, Fox, Ling, Melican, Thurlow and Ronke with at least three places needed to be found, maybe more if the AFL reduces list sizes by more than the mooted one. One would think the players who could not make the 22 in the last round would be most at risk of being delisted with the possible save of being offered a rookie spot if they are still there for that draft. Would not want to be in the shoes of Foot or Ling. I don't think Brand actually has a contract either so he would be next in line followed by Ronke (trade him if possible) and Thurlow then Fox and Melican..
The three rookies could fall foul of the rule only allowing one third year rookie on the rookie list as all will be third year. Possibly that rule will be relaxed for 2021 otherwise two of them will also need to go.
It is easy tp see why Ludwig is feeling pain.
ET might yet save one spot depending on how that situation is resolved.Comment

A look at the stats:
Cox seems to have played as a relief ruck in most games he's played, often recording 10+ hitouts.
He played as the lead ruckman twice in 2017 and recorded impressive stats:
- 25 hitouts against Port Adelaide (Ryder 31 ho)
- 43 hitouts, 8 tackes, 6 marks, 2 goals against Geelong (Zac Smith 35 ho).Comment
