What is the point of bringing a KPF that is going to cost a lot if we are not in contention for the flag? In 2012 and following years we were contention and rightly paid overs for Buddy, Tippett etc.
Now we are atleast 2- 3 years away from contending.
It makes sense not to pursue dud investments when you need to first shore up some nice investments with excellent draft hand.

I think it's borderline. Lets hope we are playing finals again in 2022. Daniher is 28. In 2023 he's 29. Probably at the top end of what we are looking for age wise. I would say Brown and Cameron are therefore too old.

Hogan a year younger than Daniher, McCartin two years younger.

I agree. I think our focus should be in the 3-5 year time frame for a Grand Final. We hopefully play finals before then but may take a couple of finals campaigns to actually make a Grannie. Therefore all our recruitment and list management decisions should be focussed on maximising our efforts for 3-5 years time.

Agree, except that we could be contending a bit sooner if a few things fall our way, particularly on the fitness front with Buddy and Reid. Normally, someone like Reid, who is only just going to turn 29, would be someone we could count on for another 5 years, but with his injury history, we tend to write him off as near the end of his career. In any case, Reid is not really a power forward. But we could fashion a side around him which has multiple good targets up forward. The league, in general, seems to heading this way, i.e. the drop in the influence of the dominant power forward.

With the ruck and key forward positions uncertain, it's hard to predict the kind of game plan the Swans will follow, except that speed and kicking should be a major part of it. Are we winning the ruck contests? Are we kicking to power forwards or a mix of players of various sizes and talents? It would be nice to achieve some resolution in these areas this year by recruiting a good young ruckman and landing McDonald or Thilthope in the draft, but neither is looking all that likely at this time, although with the Swans, there could always be something brewing behind the scenes. The high price going for players changing clubs this years is a real deterrent to being a player in the trade market for rational list managers.

As bloodspirit has commented, he would be happy with any of the top 3, including Hollands. Normally I would be pretty keen on Hollands. It's more of a positional thing that a key forward would suit us better. Hollands looks like a super player and could be a great pickup, if he's the one we draft.

I agree with Aardvark that's part of it. Also think the medical team at the Lions have a really good record of getting injured players playing again (McCarthy, Birchall etc). I also reckon spending time in QLD was a factor.

The Harley connection......however since then, he's come to realise we're 'just not that into' him and has moved onto another non-Vic team who actually is.

A year ago it was a secret discussion, so we may have been the only ones courting him. As I said elsewhere, going public opened him up to other clubs.

It's a good question though and one that seems to have been entirely ignored in the press. We've had so few genuine "stars" show an interest in us in recent years, it would be nice to know (exactly) why this played out the way it did. Suspect there are only a few people who know the whole story.

Main take away is they are chasing ruck backup and are keen to keep pick 3 for the draft.

Gardiner volunteered that we'd made enquiries with other clubs regarding established rucks and suggested Hickey wanted to come east, which made me wonder whether the Hickey rumour has come from the Hickey or WCE camps.

On The Age podcast, Jake Niall mentioned us as being a possible destination for Cox (and Collingwood fan Michael Gleeson said he thought Cox was more a ruckman than a forward).

Gardiner also suggested we were interested in forwards, but I'm not sure how we'd pay for that in trade terms.

I actually think it was meant to be another Buddy deal, that is, he was always supposed to come to us this year, but he stuffed the whole thing up by going public last year. Which opened him up to other suitors. We'll never know how concerned the Swans are about his injury history | durability. But if Brisbane can get him playing regularly then he's an absolute steal.

But they initially said there was nothing to it ... until Daniher requested a trade.

Allegedly Brisbane adjusted their Daniher deal to make more of the $ guaranteed and less triggered so they'd make sure the Bombers got pick 7

All the ducks are lining up for a Mason Cox trade. We should drop the Hickey idea, even though I saw he was keen to go east. How many back up ruckmen do we need? Cox will teach Cox everything he needs to know about rucking. Cox as our 1st ruck makes us competitive next year and a serious top 8 contender.

I see that Collingwood has put Cox on the masonry. I just read on the AFL website that they want to trade out their 1st rounder for 2021 to get more picks this year. So the trade I suggested earlier involving swapping our current first rounder for Cox and Collingwood's 2021 first rounder (as the main part of the deal) is the best way to go for us.

We can get the extra points we need this year by trades out (like Ronke perhaps) and moving later 2021 picks forward to this draft. We go into 2021 with 2 first rounders and no obvious 1st round academy kids, so can target a forward in next year's draft. Hollands may become a great player, but logic dictates that this is best way to go from a team needs perspective. This trade would just about put a ribbon on the Swans premiership package.

I would be happier with Cox than Hickey, but not upset if Hickey comes, as I know we're trying our best and I think he'll be better than Sinclair.

We really need as good young tall forward, so Logan McDonald is my preference, but I would be really happy with Hollands, who looks like he'll be an elite player in the competition. Also, as someone said, he's from Wodonga, so there shouldn't be go home factor; in fact, it's John Longmire country (give or take a riverbank), and we know John relates to country lads.

But I don't think either will be available - I think they're clear one and two. The only way we'll get one is if Adelaide pick the local boy Thilthorpe, which, who knows, in light of Victorians wanting to head back south-east they may do. I notice he's described himself as 'a big Crows fan'
(Catching up with a Croweater - Riley Thilthorpe - SANFL). Hmm.

Presuming they don't, we're left to choose between Thilthorpe and Grainger-Barras. I'd want to know whether Thilthorpe can lead the ruck. I notice he's been rucking the forward stoppages in the SANFL (SANFL Player Focus: Riley Thilthorpe (West Adelaide) - Aussie Rules Draft Central).

This does sound pretty useful:

Grainger-Barras' athleticism is pretty enticing, but I'm happy to back McCartin to have a crack at being our number 1 tall defender.
