Even though I argued to the contrary, I suppose you are correct in reality, although they still have Nathan Vardy as a backup. But the fact is that he's not very good and gets injured a lot. It's really sad that we're looking for a backup for Sinclair. You would think we would target a better player, or just pass on the whole thing and go with Amartey and McLean as backups. I have a problem with how we try to make up for lack of quality with quantity when it comes to ruckmen.Comment

I was wrong, according to the Age, "Jesse Hogan has left more $500,000 on the table after tearing up his contract and accepting a new one-year deal with the Giants as he attempts to revive his flagging AFL career ... he was prepared to negotiate a new deal with Greater Western Sydney in order to give himself a fresh start with them."
So they got him for nothing and they are paying him little
Hogan must be desperate to keep playing, so may come good as a replacement for Cameron, or if Cameron stays, a replacement for Phil Davis or lachie Keefe down back.

Hickey is a total waste of time. At best he'll be marginally better than sinkers.Comment

I read in an article that young untried Bulldogs ruck Jordon Sweet is out of contract. 202cm and big lump of a lad. A look on YouTube at his SANFL highlights before being drafted showed he has some ability and decent mobility for a big man!
Surely worth a crack instead of 30 year old Hickey...

The ruck is a cursed position for the Swans. Either the player doesn't play a lot of games for us when we recruit them, or we're raiding other clubs for rucks, or those few that we do recruit end up going elsewhere.
We're doing very well if we can get a ruckman to play 100 games.
* Stafford 130 - finished at Richmond.
* Pyke 110 - mature aged recruit.
* Ball 90 - recruited from West Coast.
* Jolly 118 - recruited from Melbourne, finished at Collingwood.
* Sinclair 85 - recruited from West Coast.
* Mumford 79 - recruited from Geelong, transferred to GWS."Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

I think people are a being a bit harsh on Sinclair. He was really a forward who could fill in as a second ruck. If we had the luxury of playing him in that role I think he would have kicked a lot of goals and taken the pressure off Buddy.
As it is, he's been the number one ruckman where he's given the Swans 100% of his effort every week.Comment

Agree we should now just settle Aliir into a back line position where he can play to his strengths.Comment

Fox Rampe Cunningham
Lloyd McCartin Mills
This would be my starting back 6. Add Melican, Brand, and Gould as KPDs who could play when needing extra height.
My point is that Aliir will need to work his backside off in order to jump these players and “settle into a back line position.” I really hope he can because it will mean that he is playing at an outstanding level.Comment

Re Hickey, makes no sense offering him 3 years. He would only be marginally better than Cal at best so can't really see why we would go to the effort to trade him in at all. Better off sticking with Cal, who will have good backup from Aliir and Reid and then getting a younger option (either main list or rookie). I felt that Reid should've rucked more in 2020 - the few times he did, actually looked pretty good.Comment
