This is the first time I've seen the new NGA rules explained: https://www.afl.com.au/news/523632/afl-scraps-top-20-nga-picks-new-mid-season-draft-plan.All opinions are not equal. Some are a very great deal more robust, sophisticated, and well supported in logic and argument than others. -Douglas Adams, author (11 Mar 1952-2001)Comment

Let's say both forwards are taken. We determine we don't really need anymore defenders or mids. I wonder if we would trade pick 3 for one of Essendons 1st rounders (?7) plus a 2nd. With that, we could get Nikolas Cox, then use the 2nd for matching, therefore not going into deficit. Or if an early pick on Campbell came, use 7 on him, 2nd rounder on a young ruck with the rest of our picks on Campbell.
I only suggest this given our history on picking a roughie, most probably due to us being conscious of the go home factor and trying to get players who are a good cultural fit. Just feel if we used pick 3 on anyone outside the accepted top 5, it would be a bit of a waste. Better to maximise its value in other ways if that's where we go.
In any case, Nicholas Cox looks the next best type of player for us if we miss out on the top 3 key forwards, and worth developing a plan for possible drafting. It's hard to know how good the KB's 'feel' is for what other teams are doing.Comment

This is a tactic that's both clever and risky. I like the idea in general, given we would get the type of player we want and help solve the points deficit problem. A lot depends on how KB rates the players involved, Cox and Hollands, and has some surety that no one is going to bid on Campbell before this new pick. Essendon's first pick out of 2nd round as of now is pick 48, but this could be solved, I believe. Essendon may also be looking for this type of player, given the loss of Daniher. So pretty complicated. And then, there's always Deadlock Dodo to do this deal with.

I see us taking our key forward at 3.

Not saying that means he’s going to be at the Swans.

I don't see how if we want to take a key forward in the draft we would miss out. The bid for Campbell will not come until after our pick. Nobody in the first 5-10 are going to risk missing out on a player because they bid on an academy player and end up having to take the academy player when the bid is not matched. This is a scenario that could happen and although he is a great player I am certain he is not genuinely in the plans of any team in the top 5.

Swans ask question of big Magpie
Summary:
* Tom Hickey (WCE) remains a trade target for Sydney
* Sydney has inquired after Mason Cox (Coll)"Unbelievable!" -- Nick Davis leaves his mark on the 2005 semi finalComment

The old adage "draft the best player with your first pick" probably still applies if McDonald and Tilthorpe go before our pick. We then pick Holland and resume the Hollands's family Swans connection.
Reports are that we've asked about Mason Cox, probably as a fall back if Hickey doesn't get done.Last edited by 707; 6 November 2020, 06:51 PM.Comment

Apparently Gary Rohan has split from his wife and had a run in with Hawkins. Rumour is that he was having an affair with a trainer in the hub and some of his teammates especially Hawkins took exception to it !
There is more to play out in the trade periodComment
