2020 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel

The only problem I have with drafting DGB is that he would become the 3rd untried defender on our list. We will go into the season with 3 key defenders with some experience in Melican, Brand and McCartin, but will likely only play 2, with Rampe being the 3 KPD. So the question remains how we would find senior playing time for Gould, O'Connor and DGB. It's too many players for too few spots.

Just a reminder for those wanting to draft Paddy McCartin, Paps Jr. or another player, in that for every additional player to the 3 projected ND picks, we will have to delist a player now on our list. So we have to put it in the context of who gets dropped to draft one of these players.

Getting DGB will allow us to swing Tom back forward to continue his development. With Reid, Buddy and Sinclair all on their last legs and big question marks over the potential of McLean and Amartey, I think having Tom develop as our CHF is better for our team in the long term.
Re further delistings, I wouldn't mind if Thurlow and McLean were let go for the right talent, perhaps to play in our VFL team as top ups. Also ET just has to go - I would be very disappointed in the club if they somehow were happy for him to stay

I doubt we will take a player coming off an ACL we got bitten by that a couple of years ago and the player never played a game.

I think we are desperate for a tall. I doubt we go small.

Who was that player we took Wolfy? I think we would prefer a talk but should take the best player available . If that Is Holland’s I think we should take him. Look at Max King, the saints gambled there and while very early on it looks set to be an excellent choice.

Explosive big bodied forward / mids are rare and excellent finds. If Holland’s is deemed the best available at our pick then let’s get him in.

So we are almost certainties to take pick 3 to the draft. The more I think about it, the more I think we need to not worry about the go home factor. If he's not an off field risk, pick the best player, pure and simple. Let's not get too cute.

KB waxing lyrical about Bruhn has me worried. I have read of no one else rating him in the top 5 (6 including JUH) and he's been injured. If we want a comparable player, surely Phillips is much more credentialed. Hollands could fill the need as well. Bruhn would typical of our usual left field selection contrary to what everyone thinks. A bit like last year when we could've got Serong. I like Stephens but Serong looks a class above and he was a Swans fan!

It's difficult to make confident choices when injured players are part of the picture. Reid will only be turning 29 next month. His injury history is poor, but he's more than a serviceable 2nd key forward, pinch hitting in the ruck and filling in down back (he's a good defender). It's hard to say how many more years he's good for.

Hollands, Thilthorpe and Bruhn all have injury concerns. I think KB mentioned that the recruiters were waiting on medical reports for these players. A lot of pundits have Hawthorne taking Bruhn. Maybe KB mentioned Bruhn to remind Hawthorne that he's a better choice than bidding on Campbell.

I also prefer McCartin as a forward too, but if he plays forward then Dawson will probably play in defence. I prefer this setup, but am open to see how things go as the season progresses. It still leaves us with having a full contingent of defenders and a bit short on key forwards, in part because of the uncertainty surrounding the development of McLean and Amartey. I always want to wait another year, and I find myself saying that again this year with these 2.

I hope the prognosis on Hollands is good. I would prefer one of the key forwards, but would take Hollands if they're gone by our pick.

Elite kicks should be playing a position where they can regularly hit forwards. Dawson is just so good by foot, rarely misses a target and has good vision.
Campbell is at least at that level, nice to have.

Other clubs have been delisting players lately. The only club with fewer delisted players right now is Richmond.

I suspect we're holding off on more list changes until the ET sentencing. If it's a custodial sentence, we would have to delist him, as it is hard to attend training from a prison cell.

I think KB may have been blowing a little smokescreen here. Recruiters won't be willing to tip off the opposition about their recruitment plans, so KB was doing little more than listing six of the top seven draft prospects.

It’s pretty important to have elite kicks coming out of defence too. Otherwise the elite kicks up the field won’t get a chance to deliver to the forwards.

Agree here. We almost always take a reach with our earlish picks (Stephens while highly rated was not expected at 5). In saying that I think we will almost certainly take DGB at pick 3, which is still a bit of a reach considering Hollands and Phillips should probably be picked before him if it was a normal year and they were all injury free...
