Something is brewing - AA , Thurlow , Fox all departing the backline rotation

Maybe Tom Mcacrtin after a small amount of time down back is truly considered as a first choice defender ? I struggle to see a clear vision of how tom will be used down back vs fast tall forwards? I see .ore upside for tom as a forward.

    But

If sinkers now gets more time forward?
If Reid and Bud take the field up front?
If paddy joins and can get his mojo back?
That's a lot of tall forwards.

For those bemoaning the Fox delisting, Will Gould is a very good player, I expect him to arrive with a bang this year, the guy is a very good footballer and person.
Fox is a totally different type of player. If there is a replacement it is someone else.

Not sure what Ronke's done to earn another year. Strange decision to keep him and get rid of Fox.

I'd guess that we're strongly considering Grainger-Barras with our first pick, given we've let go three defenders (including Aliir).

I think we will pick a tall defender cheap in the 2nd or 3rd draft

My gut feeling is that take a tall forward or mid with our pick 3

With Fox, we would have known we were going to let him go, and probably shopped him around during the trade period because we would have taken a 4th or 5th round pick just for points value.

            Obviously, no takers.

Ah yes, wanting to keep Fox, a player who found his home in the backline and started to play some excellent football, is so negative.

Thanks for your input. As usual it is consistently garbage.

AFL clubs tonight informed they’ll be able to move two players straight from the senior to rookie list. Those players will avoid draft process, eg being delisted then re-rookied. Helps with list size constraints & salary cap ($80k of rookie contracts sit outside cap).

Worth noting: players already delisted wouldn’t have had their fortunes changed if today’s update came earlier.

And good news for Cat B rookies - they’re eligible to play in 2021 without the need to be upgraded like previous years

I'll join the chorus of dismay at Fox's delisting. Can play, cheap. What's not to like?

Gee that's pretty unlucky for those already delisted. Assume this means Fox and Thurlow are included in this mix? They would be the 2 perfect ones to Rookie.

I wonder how much of an influence the change in coaching panel, especially Blakey’s departure, is having in terms of list management. Wasn’t he previously backline coach?

Dawson, Rowbottom, McCartin, Papley, Heeney, Mills, Mcinereney, Blakey, Stephens, Campbell, Pick 3

We just need an above average player in the middle of the field and in forward half and I think we would have a very good nucleus of players
How can we know they will be above average ? Ive seen good footy from Blakey, McInerney and Stephens , but also seen plenty from them that needs improving. No guarantees they will get to that point. Im sure we thought Ollie and Will would've improved by now after such promising starts to their careers, but they are now worse than when they started with no guarantees of being in the next flag side. Same could happen with those 3. And too early to tell with Campbell and pick 3.

Im sure i am seen as negative, but we would not be the first club to over-rate our young players. I have followed this club since before they became the Sydney Swans. I attended every home game in 93. I was at both the 05 and 06 grand finals. I've seen it all. I can appreciate that success is not a right, it's a privilege. And it is fleeting. Just because we've done well at developing strong contending teams for the better part of the last two decades it does not mean that we will automatically repeat that success this time around.

I wish the club would give itself the very best chance at doing so, rather than leave our fate in the hands of a bunch of unproven kids about half of who, statistically speaking, will end up busts.

Without too much investigation, id say "Elite" talent is 70%+ from the Top 10 of the draft.

We havent had a lot come thru from there.

Im happy with the way most are progressing and i believe with the more attacking and free game style more will be able to show they can be great.

25yrs onwards is where guys really start to consistently perform at a high level, we just need to hold the guys in that age bracket otherwise we just turn into a nursery

If we are predicting like David King we will be in the top8 in 2021 but NOT really a contender in 2021.....shouldn't we giving the following 11 backline rotation players the time in Seniors and finals asap?

Even if 2022 more likely for finals......all the more reason to give more opportunity to Gould, Brand, Ling and maybe another KPD rookie?

                              Rampe
                              Mills
                              Melican
                              Brand
                              Dawson
                              Lloyd
                              Oriordan
                              Cunningham
                              Gould
                              Ling
                              T.McCartin ?

I suspect that the club has also made a call that the run with type roles of Fox and Thurlow can they develop even more vs our emerging talent?

I do think they can but they were handy in 2020 to play that type of role

I also feel for Robbie Fox. I actually have him to being close to best 22 after this year. However, I will propose an alternate hypothesis based on the fact that he is "cheap."

A few years ago I had a friend of a friend who played regular first grade Rugby League. He wasn't a star but did his job on the wing and so was a good, cheap option for filling the squad. He was offered a new contract by the Dragons. He did the maths, and although he was fulfilling his dream of playing professional sport, he realised that he could actually earn more money and support his family better by working in the mines. Therefore, he declined the contract, was the equivalent of "delisted" and left Rugby League.

Is it possible that Robbie Fox had a similar experience? He is 27, has probably realised that he will never be on the top dollar and was potentially offered a rookie contract which really isn't that much money especially when renting around Moore Park. Perhaps he was a part of the decision, deciding to go back to Tassie, become a Real Estate agent and earn more money with less physical rigour?

It's the only think I can think of as otherwise, he would be perfect to keep around.
