While others are bullish on linking key defender Denver Grainger-Barras to this pick, the Swans may also look to add to their long-term inside midfield depth with Phillips. He may not be the big body to replace Josh Kennedy down the line, but is a reliable ball winner with very few weaknesses who looks every bit the 250-game prospect. As far as comparisons go, he may well be this year’s Matt Rowell, who he spent time alongside in Oakleigh’s premiership midfield during 2019. He looms as the best pure midfielder available at the top end.

The 181cm midfielder has some elite traits, headlined by his versatility, searing speed, and damaging left-foot kick. The Swans will likely be a touch perturbed by a bid this early, but should take little time to match the selection and end up with consecutive picks. They will then sweat on when a bid for Errol Gulden arrives, ideally in the second round.

I missed it but people on social media said Logan McDonald looked unhappy to be picked by the Swans. Any truth to it?

Gulden got past both Melbourne picks and the Giants have just bid for Reef McInnes. After Gulden has cut up their academy teams, a number of times, I was fairly sure that the Giants were going to bid on him. Though I suppose they can still do that, if the McInnes bid is matched.

I must admit I thought that when watching the interview, although he could just be a fairly relaxed fellow as well. He certainly didn’t seem thrilled but that could be put down to he though he would go higher? Anyway once he gets to the swans the boys will make him welcome and he’ll settle in just fine

He looked OK imo being picked up by us & more so in his post selection interview particularly playing alongside Buddy. He was always going to move interstate. Just wssn't the over the top celebrations like some others. But nothing like Tanner Bruhn who was clearly underwhelmed being picked by GWS at pick 12 which also remained in his post selection interview.

The Hawthorn bid on Campbell was malicious. If they took a midfielder with their pick it could be justified. But they did it just to hurt the Swans. Maybe Clarko was cranky after both Phillips and McDonald were picked.

I'm now looking forward to a further Clarkson tantrum being provoked, when we give them a sound thrashing next year.

They've got a Daicos F/S next year. They've been keen to move out their 2021 first round pick, which they have now done.

I think Gulden getting through this far is a real bargain. And I suspect that as the years go by, it will be seen as even more of a bargain.
