Parks just epitomizes the club. So glad he's probably staying.

Having said that, I live in Brisbane and part of me was looking forward to watching him play live more and also seeing him at junior clinics my son attends. A bit selfish of me, I know.......

Whether we keep Stephens will come down to his trade value. If we were offered pick 5 or 6 (same as we paid for him), I'd take it in a heartbeat, because his tragectory is not looking like a pick 5 player.
In fact, any pick inside top 10 would be worth taking IMO. The longer he stays on our list, the worse his trade value will get if he stays a fringe player. Right now he's still has the value of "untried early first round pick".

Hewett is surely strategic in that we just see what he gets offered and match if its not reasonable ?

With most clubs tight, its unlikely he gets a big front ended or even a longe range deal

        - - - Updated - - -

But he is criminally underrated when Horse plays him in position like the back half of the year

I have summarised key info below - given we have nothing of great interest to go on, it is interesting (even if it doesn't all prove to be true). In short:

          - Parker will probably stay, but could be tempted by a club like Brisbane - i.e. he wants to challenge for flags, not chase dollars, so is not interested in the usual Melbourne based suspects. However, the poster did suggest he may well have already signed on (as per Healy's suggestion on television last night).
          - Hewett and Reid both been told to consider all options and very likely to leave - Hewett likely to gain some interest and if he goes compensation pick at end of 1st round, or after our 2nd round pick. Who knows with Reid, but not much interest.
          - Stephens more likely to stay if Hewett goes.
          - Dawson likely to stay, but probably just on a 2 year contract to bring him up to free agency.
          - Sinclair may retire if we get another backup ruck, but happy to sign on for another year if not.
          - We want to keep our 1st round pick, but happy to consider options to trade rest. Also looking to build up some 2022 draft currency, as some decent academy kids to think about in 2022 and 2023 (I'm sure there are some posters on here that can give some good insight on that side)

And finally (and this makes me feel old!), Leo Barry's son is doing very well in under age footy, and is looking a good prospect for the 2023 draft as a F/S selection
Interesting, and would be keen to hear from others on the Academy prospects - both type of player (KP vs mid) and quality.

I kind of feel the focus for the next two drafts needs to be largely on height. For this year, the range on some of the draft boards for the KPPs (mainly KPDs it seems) is largely that 10-25 range. So a second pick late first round to give us options to nab one of them would be good. If Hewett is shipped off, use our two second rounds to get up the draft this year, and use what's left to start to get points for next year if that's the case re the Academy.

Your point is a reasonable one Barry, but it applies to any player does it not? Pay enough to be paying 'overs' and really the club should probably take it.

The point being made was more around Stephens will stay if Hewett goes on the basis it will result in him having more opportunities for first team footy.

He is one of very few free agent (I almost typed free range ha!) midfielders on the market however. I suspect that to make the books 'balance', there has to be someone put on the chopping block, and Hewett is sadly that guy. I hope he stays - I agree he is under rated by many and a good player and would like to see him stay, but I can see also why he might be the unlucky one when the tough call is made.

What do you think Hewett is worth. a mid 2nd round pick ? (~ pick 30 )
Hewett is a RFA so it will be an AFL generated compensation pick. They are a secret recipe formula using years offered and average dollars over those years. I doubt any club is offering sufficient of either to give us a pick any better than around 40 which will be end of second round/start of third round. At that level of compo you'd keep Hewett, he is after all solidly in our best 22.

Compo picks are allocated at the start of rounds or after your own round pick, Frawley got Melbourne a pick after their first rounder which landed at pick 3, Hawthorn got the same after their first rounder compo for Buddy which landed at pick 19. So us finishing 6th rather than 16th does us no favours in the compo pick stakes :-(

Note that after Daicos, Darcy and GC assistance pick, the first round will be 21 picks, the second round a minimum 18 picks but likely longer given some NGA's may be chosen. There will be some exitinguished second and third round picks matching F/S and NGA bids.

If the club isn't in the position to even offer Hewett a contract, I am not sure we will get any compensation for him were he to depart.

                    Hewitt RFA

We get compo if he leaves
We have the right to match any deal he is given

                    No rush

I'm not sure that is technically correct if he's a Restricted Free Agent. It depends on a few things - the length and salary of the new contract, as well as the net effect of other free agents in and out. But we're not obliged to offer a contract.

But you may be raising another issue. If we don't offer a contract at all and no one else wants him, Carlton can go: here's one year at $350K and we'll go from there. In that case, we will get bugger all.

When the swans used to hold trivia nights, at his first year at the club, he sat next to me during the first half of the night.
God love him, but he had no idea about a lot of things. Bless, he was like, 12.
He was hilarious that night, and we bounced our warped senses of humour of each other and I went home with sore ribs from laughing.
In his mid- to late-20's, when his body naturally just went up a notch, I was speaking with him and his Mrs after a match and asked where the hell did he buy the new guns, and if he'd got them on special or paid full price. His Mrs pushed me and said shut up... his head is big enough as it is. We all cracked up.
He is honestly the nicest bloke, and is everything the "bloods" culture says and is about.
I've enjoyed watching his career just get better and better and watching him grow into the man he is today.
He built his new house pretty much with his own hands... I can't see him leaving it.
I'd honestly be devastated if the club didn't sign him back up at a decent wage. He's a one-jumper man.
By all Fox rumours, he's staying... but Club... hurry up and announce it officially so I can sleep at night.
Love this, thanks for sharing. Would feel like losing a loved one if he moved clubs.

Would be delightfully surprised if we get a first rounder for Stephens. Our best chance might be a swap of first rounders but even that seems pretty unlikely.

My thoughts re Stephens is that we should keep him if possible. I'd like to give him more time to develop into the player we'd all like him to be.

Only at the minimum price. Has not played like a first rounder. He can run but so could Jack Hiscox and I don't think he's looking much better.
