Barrass becomes a RFA next year so i wouldn't be surprised if the club tries approaching him again. Their recent enquiry might have been to plant seed in his head, particularly given some have WC dropping out of finals contention come 2023 with their current list.

ALL THIS DAWSON BASHING IS BORING!
Dawson picture front page of the Adelaide Advertiser (Murdoch) this morning "Crows new Heir Jordan" and has the wholeback page of the paper to himself.
He explains that the being away from Sydney on the road for the last half of the season and Covid border restrictions were wearing him down, he got home to Robe to do his two weeks quarantine and it was during that period he made up his mind.
I feel sad and sorry that some posters want to pile vitriol on Jordan for making a decision like this. Remember, this is their job. If you were in Jordan's situation and another employer in your home state offered you more money to do the same job amid the uncertainty of Covid going forward then you'd probably move.
Clubs push out players all the time, this is just the reverse, get over it. The fact that Cows were at the pointy end of the draft is what hurt us but that's for the VFL to sort out before GC gets taken to the cleaners next year.
So how about we stop the juvenile attacks on Dawson, recognise it for what it is, and move forward.
My way of looking at this trade period is
Our 2022 third rounder will probably be in the 50's and we probably wouldn't have used it anyway so it cost us nothing
We lost Dawson and had a four pick first round slide, we gained Ladhams who is a need and upgraded a 2022 pick in the 50s to pick 18'ish. That pick will be valuable next year when I believe we may have three academy draftees?
Liz, can we make a thread just for Dawson talk, which I am so over, and revert this thread to discussion about the upcoming ND, pick swaps, DFA to target etc.
We did quite ok as a sum across both trades
Covid has changed a lot of people's perspective on life and if he wants to do the same job near family, I won't begrudge him for it.
I hope he has a nice career at Adelaide, gets his regular September holiday and watches the Swans win premiership after premiership.Comment

I am trying not to be too biased here but I think JD will be highly disappointed when he realises the differences between Adelaide’s young talent and our own. They’ve bombed their first round picks for a number of years (excluding possibly Thilthorpe). Adelaide need to draft really well for another two years to be remotely on our same trajectory.Comment

Stevo, you’ve completely misinterpreted my post. Calm down.
I was referring to the situation. If we were forced to essentially give up Dawson (3rd in out B&F!) for Ladhams, that is a terrible situation and outcome for the club. Terrible.
I wasn’t ‘kicking the club while it’s down’, I love this club - hence why I frequent this forum.Comment

Why does Jordan owe the club something because he is now above average and had a good year?
If we apply your logic to this scenario then the club owes Matt Ling another contract because he worked hard and was unlucky with injuries and was below average.
Maybe Sam Reid is owed something by the club for his hard fought decade?
Jordan owes Sydney nothing and Sydney owe Sam Reid nothing. This is business and both sides play the game.
Nevertheless, it is fallacious to think that this is all just "business" as usual. AFL is a very human endeavour and any reasonably smart club realises that it is dealing with human beings and that heartless behaviour by the club is unlikely to win it much loyalty from the players. Accordingly, players like Ling and Reid have been given some years to show their worth and either haven't performed or appear well past their best. In return for their time at the club, Ling and Reid have no doubt been handsomely compensated by the club, but such beneficence can't continue indefinitely and the club now owes it to supporters and players to cut these two from the list.
As I am sure you realise, it is ridiculous to suggest that Dawson owes the Swans nothing. Swans fans are seething because he did the wrong thing and because his departure makes it significantly more difficult for us to savour a premiership in the near future.Comment

This is nolt having a go at Jordan, but he’s now limited his overseas holiday options for himself and his partner. Big Dom P is opening the international border in November with no hotel quarantine. You Beauty!!!!

You basically don't get it. The club's primary loyalty is to members and supporters and this means there goal must normally be to field the best team possible.
The club made Dawson and rewarded him handsomely, they have every right to feel bitter about his shabby behaviour.

With the PSD, it's gotten to the point where I've heard a couple of media commentators suggest clubs should be ruthless exploiting the PSD in getting uncontracted players like Dawson for nothing. No trade negotiating, just get player to walk straight through to them with his club receiving nothing.
This should be a worry to the AFL that this sort of thinking is spruiking in the media. The fix is simple as mentioned above by MCS & others.

That is a very narrow view of the world. I tend to believe Jordan was sincere when he communicated fans had nothing to worry about, but things change.
I sit here in Sydney today having spent the past 3 years abroad. At Xmas relocation was not on the agenda yet by March we were back home. Change of jobs, schools, selling cars etc is not something you take lightly. It was not my intent to return, and my preference was to remain, however wife and family considerations came into play due to COVID. What has happened over the past 2 years have impacted a lot of people and the desire to be nearer family can be genuine. Until you are away from family with no ability to return should there be sickness or death, it is hard to know how you would react. Yes it looks to be resolving but there is no certainty. A new variant could come, borders could be shut again, who knows.
I agree the mechanism of the PSD is wrong, but I don’t begrudge him for making that decision. I also agree he should have been able to nominate SA only. Hopefully changes are made.
For all we know the contract offer from Sydney increased over time, if they had of put our best foot forward earlier in the year he could have remained.
Such is life. Disappointed, but wish him well.Comment

I've commenced the process of moving on about JD. He is no longer thinking about us so we should do the same about him. He is a loss but not irreplaceable.
We should think about what lessons we can learn from this whole sorry episode. Two come to mind for me:
1. Try and lock better players into longer contracts so that if we think they are a real flight risk, then move them on while they still have a year to go. Look at Geelong, they picked up a similar pick to us for trading an unproven player to Freo. The difference was he had one year left on his contract.
2. Re-sign in-demand guys coming out of contract very early in their final season. Don't let it get to the trade period.Comment

I say all this Dawson defending is boring and preachy. Let us get it out of our system....on our own time line, not yours. Cheers.Last edited by stevoswan; 15 October 2021, 04:09 PM.Comment
