Naismith should of if the umpires didn't crush our spirit that day.

Was actually one of the best on ground for the Swans in the 2016 GF I thought.

Media speculation on Josh Kelly going to Norf or Essendon, Shai Bolton to WA & JUH being pryed from the Bulldogs:

Shocking news for Naismith. Unfortunately that leaves us (again) with the thinnest ruck stocks in the league.
Sinclair will turn 32 before next season, Hickey is on one leg, and neither Amartey or McLean are true ruckmen. McAndrew is several years from being ready for AFL, presuming he makes it.
We simply have to trade for a ruck. Drafting a kid wont do. Maybe someone like Archie Smith of the Lions who isn't getting a game.

I quite agree (except perhaps with the claim that we have the thinnest ruck stocks in the league). The question is what type of a ruck do we target. First, do we focus on a 'pure' ruck type, as opposed to a forward-ruck (like Chol or CCJ from Richmond). Second, are we looking for someone who is a back-up to Hickey, or are we looking for a player to be our #1 from the time they arrive.

Given how well Hickey has started, you'd think we'd back him to be our #1 ruck for the duration of his contract and get someone who's ready to step in and fill the breach. Perhaps after a few years of development McAndrew will be ready to step up when Hickey finishes (although, you'd have to say that is a real long shot given that McAndrew has hardly played the game). So, I tend to favour the idea of getting a best 22 forward-ruck to help Hickey out (unless we think that Amartey or, less likely, McLean, can be that player) and then also to get in another younger, ruck who is not likely to be a regular best 22 in the next year or two. Otherwise we may have to hold on to Sinclair longer and I hope that that is not the solution. The Chief has been good but he has reached his use-by date.

In terms of targets, if we did want to target an out-and-out first team ruck, Sean Darcy is out of contract at Freo at the end of this season and has been playing very well. He wouldn't come cheap. Also, he'd have rival suitors, most especially Geelong. Geelong have thinner ruck stocks than us (a whole bunch of quasi rucks like Stanley, Blicavs, Ratugolea) and also Sean Darcy comes from the Geelong area and used to play for the Falcons. So, if it weren't for the fact that you wouldn't think Geelong would have the cap space, I'd think they'd be favourites to attract Darcy away from Freo, if anyone were. So, despite the attraction, I think Darcy probably isn't going anywhere and we're not the right fit for him while we have Hickey playing so well.

For lesser light targets, I'm not so sure. I don't claim the ability to be able to identify talented players years before they reach their peak. Sam Hayes at Port could be one although I think there are questions over his tank and his competitiveness, and either he or we were not interested in that deal last year when we were looking at getting a Port ruck in return for Aliir.

Does anyone else have inside mail on developing young rucks in other teams that might be prepared to leave for a #2 ruck spot with us?

Mason Cox is out of contract but is not young and not a great ruckman.

Sean Darcy is far too young for Geelong’s list profile at 23, but will be too expensive for us I suspect.

I don’t think the Tigers can hang onto all of their rucks: Soldo, Nank, Chol, CCJ plus Ryan, although there will be a lot of suitors for any that become available.

Other names I’ve seen mentioned are:

              Hayes
              Ladhams
              Xerri

I'm sure that list managers would have noted the performance of Max Lynch, for Collingwood yesterday. He's a 22 year old, late convert to the game, who's been on their list since 2017, but has hardly played a game, behind Grundy, and to a lesser extent, Cameron and Cox. Given his chance against Melbourne, he beat Gawn in the hit outs. Appears to be only contracted to the end of this season.

Lynch is a great suggestion! Hayes I mentioned already. Ladhams (a) didn't want to come to the Swans last year; and (b) doubly won't want to leave Port to be a second fiddle, whereas last year he would have been offered the role that Hickey has now. The great thing about the Lynch suggestion is that he comes from the Riverina and we might be more attractive than Collingwood in the sense that he could be our #1 ruckman in 3 years time when hopefully we'll be contending - to use an expression favoured by Horse - "up to our eyeballs". Chol + Lynch - get it done Kinnear!

Plus Collingwood need to trade someone (or ones) out to get enough draft currency for Daicos, let alone their NDS prospect. They probably won't want to lose another clear first-22 player so might be grateful to get something reasonable in return for a fringe player like Lynch.

If he out rucked Gawn can’t imagine he’ll be fringe for too long!

What a crazy footy world where talk is being actively had of a 1st year draft pick looking elsewhere because he hasn't had an opportunity yet.... crazy if true (though I doubt it really is!)

Seems a very decent shout. I didn't watch yesterday's game, but by all reports Lynch was pretty impressive.

Its a tough position we are in related to the ruck issue - we are probably genuinely 2-3 years off truly being in a good spot to challenge for a flag. But as Hickey has shown this year - a good ruckman can quickly make an enormous difference to a team also. So a good trade to give us a proper depth could propel things forward. We have to be a decent chance to snare one from around the traps if we go that way you would hope.

Josh kelly is soft as putty

His highlights always make the news , they never show the fifty times a match his opponent gets out two metres clear of him

Happy for Kelly to exercise his rights in the GWS contract he holds - 8 years at $1mill/year, nice anchor for their cap

On previous ruck target posts - Geelong always have cap space (Sean Darcy), Pies currently don't have enough points to match a top 5 bid on Nick Daicos (Lynch)

I think Grundy would be more available than Lynch if a team was prepared to take on his massively bloated contract. Cox would also be available but again not value for money.
