The news reported about Dawson has been that the Crows have been chasing him hard but I wouldn't be surprised if Port have the wherewithal to offer him a sizable deal too. They were chasing Zach Merrett until he re-signed with Essendon on a massive contract and so they must have the money in stock.Comment

Is that from the video clip posted today in conversation with Mitch Cleary? I don’t know if he had any insight into what Dawson would do, just what he thought would be the most likely outcome in a “wait and see” proposition. He could be right though.Comment

For the record I don’t want to see Dawson, Parker, Hewitt or Stephens leave. Unfortunately salary caps force most clubs hands. There are choices to made due to financial constraints. We are simply debating these choices.
I also feel there is a moral obligation from all players in the AFL to each get the best financial deal they can.
I wonder why fans are so selfish to expect players to take financial deals that are far less than what they are worth on the open market so they can maintain a position at the fans club. Fans don’t do the hard training, fans don’t do the hours of physio, fans don’t face the scrutiny and the fans are not walking with pain when they are retired. Players have limited years to earn on field money from playing football. These years need to be maximised. They have children and partners to support. These players are also years behind in their career progression compared to their mates at school. Many players have to start a new career from scratch while their mates from school have already had 8-10 years in the system to advance their careers.
Fans should be happy for players to move on if the result of them moving on is better future prospects and prosperity.
Look at Carlton, paid overs for Judd and got 145 games out of him and lost Josh Kennedy who has played 240 odd games for West Coast...
We can't over pay for aging stars at the expense of our your stars.

I vaguely recall Reid is on 500k + a year. I like Sam but for the money, is not on the park enough. Amartey and McLean are both on the rise and McDonald looks like a winner. If we need to free up cap space to retain the likes of Parker, Dawson and Hewett, Reid would be an obvious target.Comment

I read somewhere once, albeit a while ago, that all clubs have to make a minimum number of list changes at season's end, via drafting, trading, delisting etc.
I thought the minimum number of list changes was 4, and the minimum draft picks to he used was 2. Could someone clarify the rules in this area please.
Also third year category A and B rookies can be rookied for a fourth year given disruption in their development.
So that means we have to create three vacancies on our senior list.Comment

I don't imagine that would too tricky? Brand, Ronke, Clarke are all possible candidates that are out of contract at the end of the year. However aren't Fox, McLean & Wicks currently all on the rookie list? So we may need more spots if we wish to elevate all of them. Perhaps we move Ling to the rookie list? Or one of our senior players is squeezed out by cap constraints, or one of our youngsters goes looking for more opportunities? It's all conjecture at this stage.Comment

(Delisting) Gray is no brainer. [Not meaning to insult him!] Naismith too if he hasn't been re-signed (as was rumoured earlier this season although I never saw any press about it). Personally, I tend to replacing Sinclair with someone younger and less proven (which might save us a few $$ too).Comment
-
I believe Gray is already on the rookie list, so his exit won't free up a spot on the list. I also recall Naismith being given a contract extension - but there maybe an opportunity to place him on the rookie list. This will at least free up a list spot, even if there is no saving for our allegedly tight cap.
Sinclair is not a straightforward decision. We need a capable backup ruck in the event that Hickey goes down, and I don't think our stock of forward/rucks could handle more than a week or two. Perhaps there is a mature body out there in the WAFL/SANFL/WFL that we could grab??Comment

Our current list situation reminds me of GWS. We have established stars coming off contract at the same time as emerging stars and to date, unproven high draft picks looking at new deals. I suspect we can't keep them all and we need to look at making some hard decisions.
Priorities would be Parker, Dawson, Hewett and Stephens in that order. In particular Parker and Dawson must be re-signed. Suggestions that Parker is expendable are crazy - he is the heart and soul of our midfield and with JPK likely to retire soon, is greatly needed to lead our young kids. Dawson will be AA very soon - absolute no brainer to keep. If it means we don't offer Bud another year to keep these 2, I'm fine with that.
If our cap space is as dire as suggested, Reid is one obvious place to look to free up cash. Other off contract listed players in the firing line would be Gray, Brand, Clarke, Ronke, Brand and COR.
Retiring Sinclair and Naismith and getting P McCartain on a rookie contract and a young Ruck (cousin of McCartains?) would be potential options. Amartey and McLean could provide ruck backup to Hickey in the meantime as a new ruck and McAndrew continue their development.
Stephens and Gould preferably to stay but we should not get into any bidding war to keep either. Re Gould, O'Connor actually looks just as good at this stage so not averse to losing him if Adelaide come knocking on his door.Comment

Barry O'Connor has had a crap two years with us Covid wise, two years that should have seen him developing in the NEAFL/VFL games have been non existent.
Anyone seen him play in recent times that could give us an idea of how he's going? Looked a great build last time I saw a pic of him.
Our rookies going into this year are Sam Gray, Marc Sheather, BOC, Malachy Carruthers, Hayden McLean, Robbie Fox, Sam Wicks, then we added McAndrew. Not sure whether some of those re-signings announced a while back mean that a couple of these were moved to the main list going forward.
Certain delists from the main list would be Brand and Clarke, possible to go or move to rookie list on modest $ are Sinclair, Ronke, Ling, Taylor saved by having a contract for 2022.
So many moving pieces and a tight salary cap mean it could be a whole lot different to we think on here.Comment
