Peter Ryan in The Age on the Dawson trade. AFL trade period 2021: Determining Jordan Dawson’s trade worth is not going to be easy

The gist: same substantive value as Cerra, but for various reasons, a lower price.

He doesn't know the current offer, it seems, but I suspect this paragraph sums up the situation accurately:

"Assuming they won’t offer their future first-round pick, which would be an advantage to the Swans, Dawson should cost Adelaide the future first-round pick tied to the Demons and at least pick 33 in this year’s draft."

      He goes on to say:

"He is better than that, but given what is available that sounds a deal worth making."

Noting that concession re his value: yeah, maybe.

If Dawson played for Geelong, Hawks, Bulldogs etc the media in the southern states would be saying outrage for a pick 17.

But because he is in Sydney and especially the Swans they media say we should be takers and just accept a less than fair offer

This is the most exciting prospect on the market in my opinion.
But he plays about three good games a year. I concede one was against us this year, but still. Oh, and his ruckwork has deteriorated over the years. And he can’t stay on the park.

Then there’s the salary. Even allowing for the hypothetical of smoothing $700k a year over say three vs current two, I’d rather take the almost $500k a year and spend it on someone who produces week in, week out. Or using it when JMac, Chad, McCartin and Gulden come knocking.

Like, what’s he achieve bar bringing love sleeve jumpers back into vogue.

Speaking of Covid matters, will be interesting to see what will happen if McGowan continues his Covid zero approach whilst SA and the eastern states open up, even with high infection numbers. Might necessitate Freo and Weagles being based out of WA to get around ongoing restrictions at the WA border.
I cannot wait to see the WA uproar after watching the Eastern States flying in and out of Bali for a number of months.

It’s quite possible that Rory sees himself as a citizen of the World and wants international travel flexibility.

Freemantal want a ruck forward replacement for Lobb. Give them Amarty. Much cheaper than Lobb and they can develop him.

Lobb always played well against us.

On Fox Footy Trade Table tonight David King suggested clubs should able to trade their PSD picks. He gave example of us giving North our ND 3rd rounder for their PSD 1st pick to cover a potential Dawson walk to the PSD and improve our negotiation hand with Adelaide. However even in that scenario there is nothing stopping Dawson putting a million dollar value on his head, knowing we don't have the cap space & still get to Adelaide for nothing.

Anyone who would be willing to go to Indonesia at the moment has rocks in their head. They have just stopped testing like other countries - note that their death rate is still high. Good luck with the travel insurance.

Supposedly Singapore had more cases than Indonesia yesterday - believe that at your peril.

So this 'player nominates a price' thing is just a PSD quirk? Can't that be done away with too?

Otherwise, agree with King. The PSD threat thing is pretty @@@@.

Anyone should be wary of a club shopping around a player who is under contract and not surplus to requirements (in terms of the team having plenty of others to play that role). Freo are already lacking decent tall forward options. They paid a lot for Hogan and then shipped him out. And now they're trying to do the same with Lobb.

                      Buyer beware.

(Unless it's clearly salary cap related, as with Collingwood last year. But that can't apply to Freo this year, surely. Not after they've been saved the money they wanted to pay to Cerra.)

                        Melbourne Herald Sun tonight:

"Adelaide will offer its newly acquired future first-round draft pick to Sydney for Jordan Dawson, aware it might be the last offer before the pre-season draft comes into play."

No mention of anything extra on top of that.

Charlie Dean, winner of the best young player in the VFL looks like a good option. He was a forward in his initial draft year, wasn't taken and now plays defence for Williamstown.

2021 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel

Although I think we might not have offered Sinclair the extension if we knew Ladhams was going to be available, it’s probably not the worst thing to have a double insurance policy for the ruck, particularly as a team who would think they can go deep into finals over the next few years.

I would be very nervous going into next year relying on Hickey staying healthy and Sinclair being the only legitimate backup.

I think Ladhams has major upside, I reckon Port still rate him but realise they can’t provide opportunities for he and Hayes so it’s better they get something back on a trade and save some money by letting him go (rather than waiting until next year when one or both might walk out anyway).

Ladhams hasn’t had enough ruck exposure to assess a huge volume, so it’s the glimpses you have to look at - which I think look really good. I actually didn’t think he was that bad in the Prelim but I’m not sure how fair it is to rate a ruckman from a game where he was the relief ruck and spent most time forward in a team that got hammered. That’s part of the problem Gary Rohan has had - his poor games in big finals have mostly been playing forward in sides that have been belted.

With Dawson we have nothing to lose in letting the rest of the trade period run down as we keep asking for more - knowing we can accept that second 2022 1st rounder on the deadline if it comes to it.

On a separate note - I hope the AFL reconsider and discontinue these charity picks in the future, such as those GC have recently benefited from. IMO it’s bordering on obscene that the ‘special assistance’ this year has been used by GC to help them simply dump a salary - the AFL may as well just give them an extra $1M in the cap and let them still stuff that up.

It's one of the best and more realistic views of Dawson's value , not vitriol like most of the other Melb media experts and outlets. Worth a read

They may well place their own deadline on any offer involving that pick. Its a little risky for us to wait to the death assuming the pick will still be there then but it is a game of poker.
