2021 trading, drafting and list management: players and personnel

This is what Swans management dread, when matched with the loss of COLA. A gradual erosion - bit by bit, player loss by player loss, diminished draft hand due to a poor negotiating position - to be competitive. We're one of the best run clubs in the comp, but that can't sustain a buffer against the meta forces working against us.

It's part of the reason they are highly frustrated and disappointed with the way the young fella has handled himself on the way out, and compromised our ability to get the best return possible.

Without COLA and with so few players coming out of NSW and Qld the northern clubs are really up against it. It now costs more to buy
a half decent (and by that I mean sort of okay but not great) apartment in the Sydney CBD than it does in midtown Manhattan.
The irony is that all the growth in the game can only come from NSW and Qld where more than half the population of Australia
actually live. The southern states are tapped out and have been for years.

Ladhams allegedly training (informally) in Adelaide with some of our SA based players, Hayward, Stephens etc [from Sam Edmund on Trade Radio]. Suggestions pick 31 will get the deal done.

Edmund says Swans unlikely to accept the future first on offer, but adds (1) he thinks if JD goes to the PSD he'll get to the Crows (2) future pick 18 is about "fair" (this despite saying he's similar to Cerra who went for more than pick 6)

Is the 20% discount on the academies & FS rule enough? If we only select NSW players..

My thoughts are - No point in only recruiting home grown players if there is no protection to the investment. Perhaps we need them to reintroduce noes or protected lists if we travel this path.

Agree the go home factor, needs to be eliminated from recruiting where possible, however there will always be big $ to attract any player to other clubs..

Train and grow best players like Mills, Heeney, Campbell and Gulden. Just have more of them and therefore if they go or are selected by others we have replacements..

Can only think of one player who had the "go-home" factor to move to the Swans, and that is Tony Armstrong. Anymore?

I know others have commented already, but you have to seriously question the PSD and it’s relevance.
It is a bit of a joke that a team with pick 4 could/will walk a player through.
I can understand the AFL being OK with the concept of the bottom team or two getting access to the best talent that falls through the trade period, particularly if they are on the younger side - in line with the equalisation philosophy the draft is the foundation of.
And furthermore those teams leveraging that PSD benefit during the trade period to assist them further.
But how far should that go? If there are other factors (eg. geographical / go-home, salary cap, player power in nominating preferred destination etc etc) that are impacting whether the bottom couple of teams even actually use the PSD to access those best talents who slip through, then surely that is the best argument to just scrap the whole thing completely.

The ability of the players to state their financial requirements for each year of their proposed contract year by year, has enabled clubs to prompt players to demand front end contracts to their exact specifications that nly they can conceivably satisfy. If the payers could only set a duration and $$ total for the duration it would close that gaping loop hole.

Collingwood were very dirty about it. Never mind we 'gave' them Anthony Rocca and Paul Licuria. And more humorously, Mark Kinnear who was traded to the Pies and then retired almost straight away.

I don't think it is the case that they can stipulate the pattern of the contract. I believe they are limited to what you suggest they should be - the duration and total dollars.

It wasn't just Eddie. I recall Malthouse making derogatory remarks about Nick's "character", suggesting people like that were not wanted at Collingwood. It was truly terrible.

Dustin Martin might want to return to Campbeltown where he spend some of his teen years. Apparently only about 6 months in him not being able to be drafted by the Swans. Kinnear was all over it.
