I reckon the stats might be wrong, but part of it is we are making the ball do the work, and conserving energy through that. Was so impressed with our ability to switch from brilliant long kicks (Rd 1 in particular) to dare I say it 'wees and poos' like short accurate kicking at times today. Shows these kids aren't just a 'one string to the bow' team at all.

I reckon the new rules favour teams with good foot skills (like us). Richmond’s poor foot skills got exposed today.Comment

Watched the game from the City End forward pocket with the rest of our supporters. What really impressed me was the desperate work of the backs in not letting Richmond get an easy possession close to goal. McCartin's second and 3rd efforts were gold. There has been some criticism of Harry Cunningham but I thought he worked really hard without having great stats. Their small forwards hardly had a sniff so he must have negated someone. Must watch for this on the replay.

One other thing caught my eye a few times, and it’s the advantage of having pace and athleticism in your side.
Particularly in the second quarter, there were a few times where Richmond were exiting the d50 with a space ahead of the ball and only had to chain it through.
Our defenders kept leaving their man, sprinting up as far as 30 or 40m to close as much space as possible to the guy with the ball, and had confidence someone else from the middle of the ground would sprint back to cover their bloke.
We must have shut down two or three plays that way before Richmond were able to get inside 50. It was both risky, but showed immense confidence in our running ability and structure, as well as each other.'Delicious' is a fun word to sayComment

What a game. I'd have been happy if they gave it a crack and were competitive for most of it. That feeling some way in when you start thinking you know, I reckon they could win this...
Would love to have been there, must have been a great game live.
Enjoyed most performances today. Thought the defence looked a lot tighter than the past couple of games. Hard to tell from the TV but looked like they rotated a few as opponents for Dusty, rather than the one hard tag.
Honestly though, they look like a completely different team to last year, with these new young blokes and the ball movement. Exciting weeks ahead if they can keep this up.Comment

I issued an apology early in the thread, but I will apologise again for doubting Wicks.
I was enchanted with Stephens being a top 5 pick from an AFL state while Wicks was a rookie listed player from Manly. I was backing the 1st round pick. As a Tom Brady fan, who was a 6th round pick, who went on to be the GOAT, I should know better.Last edited by Bangalore Swans; 3 April 2021, 06:46 PM.Comment
