Sorry, incorrect observation as Gould played plenty of senior SANFL as an U18, including Glenelg's Premiership and acquitted himself very well even though he may have been slightly heavier than ideal.

I have great faith in our development capabilities with young players.

Hope your judgment of him is correct but SANFL standard a fair way off AFL.

I don't think McDonald will be rested as some have suggested (he & Buddy will benefit from the 9 day break), as I think Reid will be swung into defence more often than usual in Rampe's absence.

Wouldn't be surprised if both Rowbottom (if fit) and Stephens are selected, which will allow Mills to play defence in a break glass emergency situation. It also provides flexibility for Parker to play more forward to cover Heeney's absence.

Selecting additional mid will require a player to be dropped which I think will be between Blakey & Campbell. I'm leaning more towards Blakey but also recall his best game last year was against GWS.

I suspect Melican will be selected over Gould, as I'm not sure how Gould has been performing in the scratch matches & selectors may want to wait till he plays a few VFL games before making call if he's AFL ready yet (which I hope we get to see soon).

Out: Heeney (inj), Rampe (inj), Campbell OR Blakey and Bell (sub)
In: Rowbottom, Stephens, Melican and Hayward (sub).

Both players who have played SANFL on our team are warming the bench. Stephens and Gould. AFL players need to be a lot more versatile and cannot afford to be one trick pony. I guess that is where the development needs to happen with Gould. With Stephens I reckon he was drafted with a specific role to play - inside and outside while at SANFL he played predominantly outside role.

I thought he played inside before we drafted him, Stephens.

He was too light to play inside. Stephens will still be a gun I reckon. He has shown he can handle AFL, just needs to keep getting stronger.

On a side note I do miss the traditional Thursday Selection nights and all the commentary that goes with it across the entire competition (not just Swans). I realise current situation came about from last year's Footy Frenzy fixture, which clubs favoured to continue this year. I'm hoping there' will be a re-evaluation as I think it's a significant traditional loss from a fan's perspective.

Never been the same since Lou, Jack and Bob.

Longmire was on SEN this morning. He was asked about Gould. Without being too negative, Longmire said he was still learning his craft and intimated that Gould was a slow developer. Longmire is not one to express either too much optimism or pessimism, but I felt that his comments were on the pessimistic side. It doesn't sound like Gould will be ready for AFL footy for a while. But we can hope that he has a breakthrough in the early rounds of the VFL comp. There was no indication of what aspect of his game is holding up his progress.

Hayward would be the obvious direct replacement for Heeney, though if Rowbottom is fit he could come in and maybe Parker moves forward to play Heeneys role. I would go Hayward to keep Parker in the middle.

                      Melican for Rampe.

Do we read much into the fact Stephens hasn't signed a contract extension yet? Would he have concerns about being pick 5 and potentially playing reserves? Would the option of returning to SA on the promise by the Crows of more game time be figuring?

I think the timing of his injury was unfortunate as he missed the preseason practice games and early season form and no injuries has meant no openings. I think he'll be in the team soon and then we get to see what he has to offer

I think Rowbottom’s R1 injury screams of mis management . He hurt himself pretty early in R1 but continued to play while we had an unused sub. He has now missed 3 weeks , possibly more . Now Rampe playing with a broken finger that could have him missing up to a month . We have relatively low injury numbers so I’m surprised by the management of both these players so early in the season

I am sure this is risk management. Game to be won vs worsening of injury. Sometimes you get it right sometimes you don’t. If it is too bad not many players can play through it. Look at Lachie Neale.

That doesn’t sound very promising for a very young player. I guess You cannot fix decision making but surely athleticism, positioning, tackling, keeping your feet etc is all fixable

He is a pick 5. If he wants to go home then we should be trading for Adelaide's first round pick. You win some, you lose some.
