    Poor night of footy.

I love Heeney but currently is massively over rated. Gary Rohan is playing better footy in the same role....

Hickey was destroyed in the ruck.

Fox had his worst game yet. Thank god for Rampe.

Bell did nothing to show me he should get a game again. Same with Lewis Taylor.

      I get it.

Papley needs to get back on his feet and chase again. While he abuses the umpires he drops concentration and drops chasing intensity.

It’s possible that if Papley chased instead of abusing an umpire he may have been able to put pressure on and force a turnover. Maybe that potential turnover could have led to a goal and a comeback. We’ll never know, however I’m miffed that so many posters are supportive of Papley’s umpiring abuse penalty.

Yeah. It works OK if he's got a bit of space to move the ball away from the contest, but that's not really the point.

No idea how we managed it but every other team to date has managed to put nearly 100 points past this @@@@ team, we could only manage 51. Pathetic is too kind. Head shaking indeed
At the same time this Hawthorn team who lets be fair is turgid rubbish has only managed an average of 75 points this season, we let them pile on nearly 90 points. More head shaking indeed.

I have no problem with an umpire paying a free kick for abuse, and this is something that Papley should work on. I also think that Razor is a reasonable umpire. The problem that he and other umpires sometimes have is their verbal engagement with players who are clearly frustrated.

In this instance, Papley has audibly shared his frustration, but instead of just continuing on with officiating, Ray has quipped back, “he handballed it, let it go” which is unnecessary, and with Papley’s further retort then led to the subsequent penalty for abuse. Had Razor just taken his own advice and ‘let it go’ would Papley have continued?

Are you happy with Papley giving away free kicks for umpiring abuse?

When the umpires have a debrief after the game, what are they going to say about Papley?

How many 50/50 calls is Papley going to win?

No way that Heeney is fit for mine (still having hand issues) - he just doesn't drop marks like he did tonight.

If umpires start thinking like that, then it exactly highlights the increasing problem with officiating in the sport - they are meant to umpire what they see on the field in the game, not who they see playing on the field in the game....

I'd like to think they are still trying to do the job in the spirit they are meant to, not with some fuzzy little notebook with 'Oooo I don't like him so he won't get a free 50/50'.

Well what ? Are we gonna drop Jpk Mills or Parker ? Of course not. RB has had half a season now to make some sort of statement but if anything he is getting worse and does not have the runs on the board the others have, so hes left himself open to criticism

Yes. I’m not convinced that Hewett has a place in the team anymore.

Think his spot as well as Wicks, Bell and Fox are in danger.

I’d love to see a line breaking running player on the HBF. That could be Blakey in time?

We did actually try to get our handball game going at one point tonight.

Surely Gulden comes back in after the bye and le Chad.

And Brand / Melican / the perpetually overlooked man-child Gould instead of Fox.

If MCS, Wardy, Stevo and Mark want to be Papley apologists and pile into me, so be it.

Papley is there to play the game, not abuse umpires. In the words of Captain Lee “I don’t give damn” if Papley is frustrated with umpiring.

What example does Papley set for young players when he gets so frustrated with umpires that he gives away free kicks for umpiring abuse.

Time for coaches to take a stand. It’s now happened twice. I think Papley should be given two weeks in the reserves to sort this out.
                          Seriously.....is there a 'yawn' emoji?

However, you're partly right.....time for the coaches to take a stand against the umpiring.....and you didn't answer my earlier question re: your own behaviour in such horrendously umpired circumstances.

By saying this, you are basically giving the umpires a blessing to be even more bias against Papley than they already are, ie: excusing corruption!

Sheese, I'd rather be a Papley apologist than an umpire apologist.

I’ve not read through this thread, having gotten home from the game and taken an hour or so to unwind, so maybe this has already been observed. But there was a game a few years back when we were fresh off the bye and we walloped Geelong by over 100 points. They were coming off two back to back six day breaks. They ran through treacle all night, our boys were floating on top of the ground.

Tonight’s reminds me of that match. Our blokes looked exhausted. It wasn’t just facing a side fresh from a bye - it was also off two six day breaks. I don’t really understand why it’s so hard for the AFL to fixture around the bye so as not to create such mismatches.

We were awful tonight - worse than the umpires - but we know the team is capable of much better so I reckon it’s a case of just moving on.

Fella, go have a peek at the other site's autopsy thread. There is a picture a umpire chamberlain warming up in the hawthorn changing rooms laughing with their players. If this is true, something really wrong.

What i know is that our team is getting officiated against every week. I don't understand it but I see it. It is really detracting from my enjoyment of watching my team play. I'd rather enjoy the game.

I'm also going to say the bye was a factor tonight. They looked a fresher team. Another factor was selection. There are players getting a game that don't deserve it and players that do, who are not. Longmire had a bad game too tonight. For some reason Clarkson has his number (as well as Chamberlain's)
He had observed that people who did lie were, on the whole, more resourceful and ambitious and successful than people who did not lie.
