You have a bit of tooth on me BF, but I do recall I think, Ken Boyd, going toe to toe with "Hooker" Harrison of Collingwood.

My dad said no one was tougher (but fair) than Laurie Nash. He reckoned Jack Dyer was scared to go near him.

Boyd got 12 weeks for belting John Nicholls. Nicholls terrified every one else in the comp. Boyd maintained Nicholls kicked him in the family jewels...think Nicholls was carried off.

Fractured his skull. Deserved everything he got. Boyd wasn't reported on the day, but journalist Kevin Hogan reported on it on the Monday and a special tribunal hearing was set up. Mind you Hogan only ever sucked up to the clubs like Carlton and Collingwood.

I met Ken some years later when he worked for National Mutual and seemed like a decent person. People who knew him said he was a nice bloke.

I remember Leigh Matthews, suppose to be one of the toughest men in Football. What is tough about king hitting a guy when he is looking the other way? Matthews did this all the time and rarely got suspended.

In footy parlance, "he was a dog". Can't stand listening to him speak. Mark Jackson didn't hit him hard or often enough in that game that he maimed Neville Bruns. I wonder how many players he belted have concussion issues to this day.

Amazing what running into and breaking a point post will do for your 'reputation'......

Matthews got a criminal record out of it, so that would have long term effects, like not being able to travel to the USA. Small, but inconvenient.

PS if you are offended then I apologise in advance but let’s face it the post has already deviated far away from its original focus.

I had a good position at Carlton during the 45 bloodbath grand final and had a clear view of an altercation when Nash temporarily put Carlton captain Bob Chitty out of procedings. Chitty recovered and went to the forward line, kicked a couple of goals and started the Carlton dominance.

However the most feared man in the game then was Jack "Basher" Williams. He didnt draw the line at anybody. Not many of the "hard men " of the game had an inclination to take him on. Unfortunately his "Barry Hall" hit on a young Ken Hands was not a good sight. Hands recovered and after half time played a big part in the Carlton win.

I was born and grew up in the same area and time royboy42 ,maybe a little earlier than you. I must have been the only Sth Melb supporter. All of my mates were either Fitzroy Collingwood or Richmond followers.

You must have been just a kid at the time Basher! Some game that- unfortunately we lost both the game and the fight.
Small wonder our intense dislike of Carlton!

I was 12 yo at the time Roadrunner. That was 76 year ago . Hard to beleive how time sneaks along.
