Its not good for equalisation but those clubs are simply exploiting a system that has loaded the cards in their favour in this regard given 60% plus of draftees on average come from Victoria.
I would like to see us do more of this type of recruiting as well, just like you, but its a bit more challenging for us WasWan, as there are few draftees wanting to "go home" to Sydney!Comment

Like to see if Fischer McAsay who was top 5 in the 2020 draft by Adelaide. He was one who Swans were interested as he is 198cm and 98kl. Not being given much of a go in Adelaide and has been playing in SANFL as key CHB. There is interest by Carlton. Would not take much to get him, if he was interested. Only 21 so right age and position. Rather him than Francis who is questionable to say the least.Comment

In fairness maybe 2 of those kids will go on to play regular footy if we are lucky ????Comment

Sydney Swans are the most widely supported AFL club ahead of Collingwood, West Coast and Essendon - Roy Morgan Research
Would it be fair to say Buddy has been a significant and positive force that contributed ?
If we dont have a a BBH, Lockett or Bud in 2024 would we see a sideways trajectory?"be tough, only when it gets tough"

Here is a quote about McAsay from Matt Randell: “I was really worried about him playing that key back role, I just didn’t think he had enough agility, athleticism, spunk about him (and) hard-nosed competitiveness for that role.”
Francis is more complicated, because there seems to be several issues at play. I have seen him play some good footy at AFL level, but evidently, that hasn't been the norm.
It doesn't pay to recruit a player like Francis or McAsay to be a depth player spending time in the VFL. There would seem to be a fair chance that if either Francis or Gould play in our defence, then Blakey may have to move to a more forward position, either on the wing or a true half forward. We have plenty of AFL quality in our defence atm. So shuffling option abound.Comment

We have a good nucleus of the squad at the younger end, but not yet at the point where we have the majority of bases covered. Not far off, but hitting the draft hard again this year makes perfect sense in my opinion. Next year makes more sense to hit the trade table potentially."You get the feeling that like Monty Python's Black Knight, the Swans would regard amputation as merely a flesh wound."Comment

I think like all strategies it depends who is on offer and having the flexibility to take advantage of that"be tough, only when it gets tough"

On reflection, Ludwig, I agree with your rational. I checked the voting tonight of the Adelaide SANFL team voting and McAsey didn't rate a mention in the top ten. So he has really slipped from being a top 5 draft pick in the 2 years at Adelaide. I don't rate Francis at all as he seems to have issues between the earsComment

If you want to have a Premiership Window that extends for several years, it makes plenty of sense to finish loading up through the draft. It builds depth, it gives trade currency (if you end up with too many good players), and if you do it well, eventually you can get to a point where you can do what Geelong has done and have a hugely versatile list.

Recruiting fringe players on the cheap doesn't count. It's just a shot in the dark. You might get lucky one day. I'm okay with that, even though with been missing most of the time.
The problem I have with going after an established star is that I can't find a player on our list that I want to replace (focusing on the best 22). I know we need to find a transition from Buddy and Reid to the next key forward group, but the players we have in line, especially McDonald, look pretty good. We should be able to get at least one good KPP in the draft with 2 picks in the teens, which should give us a very good chance to making the transition work.Comment

I'd be curious to see some stats on our clearances from the centre bounces and where we sit in the competition. There is
nothing that drives me crazier than seeing the ball go straight back to where it just came from after the opposition scores
a goal. I had to be restrained in a straitjacket last Saturday. Are these numbers somewhere on the interweb?Comment

I was mulling over our mix of current players and their versatility in multiple roles
Depending on Reid and Bud staying at similar levels to 2022 and also depending on our backs maybe evolving with the likes of BJ and Gould stepping into the 22 for parts of the season......
Is it possible we will see lizard push forward a little more in 2023 or is that progression more likely 2024?"be tough, only when it gets tough"
